Glorious, glorious summer.
Lancashire bakes under cloudless blue skies.
I hope it lasts until October. Even the weather forecast says it's to get even hotter until at least the middle of next week. It's perfect, as it isn't even hot and sticky at night. Just fabulous. How are you enjoying your time in the sun? I'm sat outside chatting to Pendy and only came in for a short while to cool off. I'm sure if we lived somewhere that was sunny everyday we wouldn't appreciate it when we get good weather. It's only fourteen weeks ago since we last had snow! It's such a lift to our collective mood. Even Accy market's shoppers seemed almost Mediterreanly laid back and smiley this morning. |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
well i have been busy completing my summer project and when I can find out how to reduce pictures will post some on the thread.
Boy was it hot with all the digging, raking etc But now sat outside having a glass of red wine and chilling |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
Believe you me garinda 6 months or more of constant sunshine isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Everything is dry and dusty and grass loses its freshness as it withers in the baking sunlight. You start to long for just a sprinkling of cool rain on your face and the fresh green look of the fields. I was in Bahrain for nearly two years and not a drop of rain did I see. The nearest we got to rain was one night in the middle of winter (down to 80 F) when there were a heavy overnight dew, which in itself was a rare occurrence.
Now with a depleted ozone layer allowing more UV rays through you can burn in no time and not realise it until the next morning when you wake up and the first move is agony - specially the young and old. |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
loading them into the gallery or attaching them should automatically reduce them jen.

Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
I feel much better for some sunshine...and yes, I suppose it can be a bit wearing to have sun all the time........I don't mind the odd shower but I absolutely hate it when the clouds seem to be banging against your forehead and you have to have the lights on all the time.
Today we have had the toddler for my daughter....he has loved playing in the sand pit and the paddling pool.......he is fascinated by his shadow.......and has wet me through several times.........creeping up on me and then hurling water at me, running off giggling and saying Sorreeee! He has just discovered the joy of ice lollies and his favourite is a tropical sun lolly.....like a miniature Jubbly...for those who remember them. I wonder if he will remember all these things as he grows up. |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
Its true when you have hot weather all the time you do not appreciate it. Today it is in the 30s again here so we are cooling off inside. We ahve to water the grass on a regular basis or it does just die, we put the sprinkler on and let the kids run throughit. Keeps them busy whilst watering the grass.Hope the good weather lasts for you.
|
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
.....like a miniature Jubbly?
I'm glad someone else has noticed the size of ice lollies lately, you can still get Jubblies from Iceland frozen food supermarket in boxes of ten but they are now the same size as the Sun Lollies, I remember they were 4d a piece now they are half the size and if you work it out are 3s a piece, (10 for £1.50). |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
Yes Ernie, they were 4d each and they lasted you ages.......like walnut whips.....oh, damn, don't get me on that subject!
|
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
Today, Edisford Bridge first to tire the kids out, then topping up my tan in the garden whilst desperately wishing I could be transported to a beer garden!!
Hand on heart, I wish this weather would stay forever ...... or that I could find enough money to emigrate to some where hot! :hothothot :bigglasse  :daisy: |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
Arthur doesn't visit me as much this weather.. Arthur is here more in the damp cold weather.. In fact most mornings Arthur will tell me before I get out of bed how damp or wet it is outside... But this weather Arthur just aint around as much as usual....and thats not a bad thing.. In fact you can stay away Arthur....
You get the message Mr Itus... stay away! |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
If we could have four months out of twelve which were hot, winter would not seem so bad.been on a ten mile bike ride with my son today, only trouble is sunk 6 cans of cider when we got back.definately drink more in this weather.

Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
I think that's why we feel so cheered when we have cloudless blue skies and sunshine, it doesn't happen a lot in this country.
Crisp winter days are nice, but because they only last for six hours or so before it goes dark again it doesn't lift your mood as much as a beautiful summer's day. After all we all know it could be piddling down next week and we could be tempted to turn the central heating on. Now where's my scythe? I'm off to make me some hay.:) |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
rindy you got it spot on mate the differance in peoples faces thats why i love living abroad.:)
|
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
You got it right there Cash. There are so many things that I miss about England but the weather isn't one of them.
It doesn't get boring to know that you will wake up to sunshine from May until November, it's so good and I'm so glad that I worked for this all my life. Funnily enough, you wouldn't believe how many folk moan about it, the Spanish included. Just goes to show that folk are never satisfied. |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
I love this weather but have missed a lot of the enjoyment from it due to work. I hope it keeps up for the next few days because I'm off, so I may be able to enjoy a day or two of it.
I remember long hot summers as a kid, the six week holiday always seemed to be hot. Maybe it is just my memory playing tricks on me?? I hate being cold and I'm sure that I wasn't meant to live in this country with its rain, wind and clouds. We don't seem to have had a decent summer for years and I definitely think that so far, this is the best one in ages... Hope it lasts a bit longer.:D |

I'm lucky my neighbours made my tea.:)
...and Pendy only shouted when I wouldn't take the left overs home and I refused to try her dry tongue!:D |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
Mez think that was jambutty re Arther.
Well the new lawn seems to have taken well and will have to water it well tonight. MH it seems that my pics are too big for Accyweb to accept so will have to try and make them smaller so that I can add them. Lettie hope the weather does stay while you have your days off and I'm just hoping that ppl will be sensible today as I'm off to work now lol Must take a bottle with me to make sure I got water :) :p) |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
I assume that what you call Jubblys Ernie is what we used to call Tub Lollies some 25 years back. They were made by ice cream van owners using 100ml plastic tubs filled with the fruity diluted ice lolly syrup and a wooden stick dropped in and then frozen. If you didn’t soak the wooden sticks for about 24 hours first they would float to the top.
During my redundancy merry-go-round I got a job with Rippleheads as a mobile ice cream salesman. That’s where I learned about Tub Lollies and how to make them. I also learned a lot of other things but now is not the time to reveal them. If global warming does take off as some boffins predict Neil, most of England with the possible exception of Cornwall will, paradoxically, become colder. We will lose the effect of the Gulf Stream because it is what keeps the British Isles warmer than the latitude dictates. They reckon that the Gulf Stream will be pushed south as far as Spain and that would mean our weather would be more like Norway. Hot days may be great if you are able to enjoy some leisure time but they are not so great stuck in a factory or office. |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
Oh well im making the most of it while we have it - as always it dont last long :D

Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
No JB, Tub lollies were something different altogether, although they were very nice, just as you described, where as Jubblies were a pyramid shaped package pre filled at the factory with various fruit flavoured drinks and then frozen by the shopkeeper, you could either ask for a frozen one or an unfrozen one to have as a drink.
|
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
Much obliged Ernie.
I often wondered what Jubblies were. Now I know! |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
In for a ten minute break to cool down.
With my back yard recently whitewashed and the azure blue skies dazzling off them, it's like being in Mykonos.:) The tub lolly debate- At the icecream van that sold them outside QEGS twenty five years ago, they were called froz's. It was rumoured that if you did a 'favour' for the man called Mother that sold them he'd give you a free one. Hopefully with more awareness nowadays the children would be straight on the blower to Childline. |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
well im absolutly loving all this beautiful sunshine, cant get enough of it.and according to forecast we got a few days left yet. yippee
|
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
I too love this weather can't get enough of it, but trouble is my friend arthur doesn't go away, in fact it can be worse. But i think we might all be in for a shock soon. According to metcheck.com the long range forcast for the 24th July

Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
continued. Sorry pressed wrong button.
at 6.00 they have forecasted light snow, and again on the 25th at 6am and 6pm. For some reason i think they've got the forecast wrong. |

Have just arrived back from two days in Cheltenham area at the Royal International Air Tattoo. Boy was it hot! The kids had factor 30 on but we just used factor 15 and have to admit that we've both burnt a little - the kids are fine though but I wanted to go around to all the other kids with irresponsible parents and spray them with the factor 30.

Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
Glad to hear that you are getting some hot weather. Very hot here in Toronto 35C here today.Brought back memories with tub lollies, going out to buy some cups and lolly sticks. To bad you can' get vimto over here, they were my favourite.

|
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
If the lolly sticks are wooden magilly don’t forget to soak them overnight otherwise they will just float to the top before the liquid has a chance to freeze.

Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
Just a little diversion, but not worth putting up a new thread.
We have had the nostalgia about the pieces of tar that used to be in the road, and how, as kids, used to pop them on a hot day as they bubbled, and then got in trouble if got on yer Sunday best, however, talked about this at work today. Just wondered if anybody knows how they got there, didn't seem to serve any purpose and dotted about with no pattern. Were they dropped from a tarring machine, etc. Any road builders out there that would know the answer ? Don't question these things when you are a kid, do you ? |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
I popped some in my back yard yesterday.
Wasn't it used between the cobbles? |

Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
I love this weather! Sat watching the cricket all day yesterday up at Haslingden and now have sunglasses shaped sunburn across my nose and eyes! Can't be too hot for me;bring on my Spanish holiday!:)
|
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
The tar was originally poured whilst in a molten state in between the stones as the cobbles were set and as the tar cooled, dust gathered on top of the tar then the tar and was not seen until hot days when it bubbled to the top again. I know this because a mate of my Dad's used to work on Accy highways department and he showed me how they did when I was a kid in the 60s.
|
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
I used to love popping them too, Katex..........I was also fascinated with the rainbows in the puddles, made by oil or petrol I reckon but I didn't know that then.
I suppose we made our own summer fun. |

Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
I hate driving in this whether, Lucily I didn't work yesterday, but went from her to aston martin at gaydon near warwick back here, before I'd even got back, got another job from tamworth to market rasen near grimsby. Driving in the sun gives me headache. I drive with the visors down even in the winter to stop the light giving me headache.

Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
gordon bennet!
actually it's nice today, warm, sunny spells but a nice cool breeze, real seaside feel to today. |
Re: Glorious, glorious summer.
With all windows open and my only door leading outside inviting every passing fly into my flat my indoor thermometer reveals that it is a cool 78 F today. Whatever breeze there is outside it seems to be avoiding me. Hang on I just saw the net curtain twitch. False alarm it was a fly pushing its way in.
Now if only I can persuade the 9th diver bomber fly squadron to leave by the front door I will have a peaceful snooze in mid afternoon. If only I could get a couple of those old fashioned ‘fly papers’. You know the ones that you hung from some convenient spot on the ceiling and all flying insects would get attracted by the sweet scent, land on the paper and remain there until death. Much more humane than that electric blue light device. At least stuck on a fly paper the fly would depart this mortal coil with a full belly of the sweet stuff. |

Lucky cos we haven't got kids, my ex didn't mind, but now I live on my own it don't matter. Suppose if I got wi somebody I'd have to buy loose clothes for the house. |
