How are you all staying cool?

Just read on CNN that the forecast tomorrow is to hit 39C hotter than Bangkok. So how are you keeping cool? Must be getting unbearable for some people especially if you have smog as well. Better than rain though.

We had a bad thunderstorm here in Toronto last night. I hate the thunderstorms when the weather has been so hot, the only benefit is the temp is down from 35C to 28C here today.

Blackout blind is down on the front bedroom.........Iknow, I like the sun too....but it is on the front of the house all day so by bed time our bedroom is like Warby's bakery......I have a shower before bed....and stay damp.....take a damp facecloth and put it in the freezer for about an hour before I go to bed....and take it to bed with me and put it on my ankles.

Plenty of water or non carbonated soft drinks during the day......light loose clothes...and a sun hat is a MUST if you are outdoors.

:not_ripe: Good morning Toronto! Down here in Virginia, USA, we're expected to hit 102 F (not sure what the Celsius reading is but very hot as well as wicked humid, nonetheless). It's very tough on my poultry, pets, and fruit trees. We've got very bad outbreak of Japanese Beetles that just love this weather. Just gotta grin and bear it. That's life on the farm!:) :Banane25:

I have come inside to cool off, I have been gardening all day. I must have drunk at least 2-3 litres of fluid so far today, and haven't peed since first thing this morning...:D :o

I am a mere grease spot sat on my sofa as I type this. I still have a substantial amount to do outside in the garden, but I don't want to burn so I will do the rest this evening..

Got one of these little fans obtained from Marks and Spencer (sorry M & S)
last year, doesn't seem to be making a lot of difference.. when ya' turn it off, seem to be hotter somehow.

Was reading a link to the internet home MSN page today, lots of the usual hints, one was take a frozen bottle of water to bed with you wrapped in a towel, but just wondering how to obtain this feat.

If I put a glass bottle or plastic bottle in the freezer, will it not crack ?

Do you think they mean in your hot water bottle ? Puzzled. Although sounds like a great idea, cuddling up to a block of cold ice in a long torpedo-like casing. :D

Two fans going one in front, one behind, lots of Holstein pils as I’m on a diet and none of it is helping. It’s hot as hell up here and no sign of it going cooler.

get a plastic bottle, fill in about 3/4 of the way up then stand it in the freezer without the lid on that means when the ice expands it goes upwards then put lid back on after.....i do this with any drinks if im going out for the day and dont have a cool box..freeze them the night before then when u want them they have melted slighty and you have a nice cool drink :)

Madhatter 18-07-2006 19:27

Re: How are you all staying cool?

yes what john said, don't use glass kate it could explode.
You could fill a pop bottle so that its level with the spout when laid flat.

I'm using factor stay indoors and hide till the sun goes down. I hate it. luckily I can sit around in boxers because its a first floor flat.
needs a nice thunderstorm about now to end the day off and cool us down for the night.

Re: How are you all staying cool?

I bought some flat cooler things from the pound shop (where else?) last year.......they are really for the inside of cooler bags but I wrap one of those in a pillow case and take that to bed with me....it is put at the bottom of the bed and I cool my hocks on it periodically during the night.

Oh yeh, of course, was never any good at Physics, think I might try this one, trouble is my freezer not big enoug to stand anything up .. are drawers, so would it make any difference then if it were laid down 3/4 full with the lid on ? Well, could perhaps tilt it a little, then wouldn't run out .. yes, think this may be the answer, watya' think ?>>>>> off to find bottle.;)

Re: How are you all staying cool?

I drink water all day (but I do when it's not so hot, too) and wear very light, loose clothing. In the house, upstairs it's windows open, curtains closed. Also, if you have a hatch into your loft, leave it open. Heat rises and it will dissipate a little into the roof space. Downstairs, French windows opened wide (makes a 6' opening) and kitchen door propped open so there's a nice cool through draught.

I use SPF 12 when out and about, 15 if I'm sunbathing, and loads of Vaseline Intensive Care after showers and baths, incidentally it's a cheap and very effective "after sun" lotion for those who get a bit sore. I don't burn because I am always quite tanned, spending a lot of my time here outdoors, all year round (mad gardening woman), and I go to Malta quite a lot so I'm not covered up all Winter. I always use sun-cream, here and abroad, even when it's not all that hot.

I certainly don't have skin like leather and I've been catching the sun for well over 50 years. :D

Doug 18-07-2006 19:37

Re: How are you all staying cool?

Set a Fan up and take a spray bottle filled with Ice water to bed with you. When your too warm spray the water on a fine mist setting in to the air so it catches the airstream of the fan.

No fan, No problem. Spray Ice cold water in to the air above you and let it fall back on to you. short lasting but effective.

Margaret Pilkington 18-07-2006 19:41

West ender, it is obvious you have looked after your skin well with the moisturiser after your bouts in the sun...and you may be one of those lucky people who are not susceptible to the well worn leather look.......I hope you didn't take offence, for no offence was meant.

I used to work with someone who used sunbeds constantly and she definitely had leather look skin....not attractive at all.

Instead of freezing water, stick a bottle of vodka in teh freezer, then when ready for bed, wrap it in teh towel. Vodka won't freeze but will hold its temperature down to -20 quite easily

Then put the bottle of frozen vodka behind the fan and this will be like a home made air conditioning unit, drawing the air past the bottle and cooling it - never tried it but it should work :)

Oh good god, no, Margaret! I hope I didn't sound offended 'cause I didn't mean to, it takes a lot more than that - I've been offended by experts. :D

I work with a lady whose skin looks like a well-worn Gladstone Bag so I know exactly what you mean. I think my hatred of being cooped up inside has been my saviour in that respect. I don't suddenly expose my flesh to violent rays, which I think causes the damage.

Daddy-long-legs season is August/September. My windows will then be firmly shut, at night, even if the temperature is in the 100s. ;)

Oh I am glad about that.

I'm not fond of any flying insects....but we have recently had a lot of blue flies....like a bluebottle but a bit smaller and with a greeny tint...if the door is left open for more that a couple of minutes they are in like Flynn...and worst of all are the big buzzard moths. I was having a wee last night and one flew in the bathroom window and dive bombed me......I stood up and peed down my leg. I haven't done that since I was Five.
The window was only open a very small way....the blooming thing must have flown in sideways!

Moths are OK, as long as they don't dive-bomb me. I like bees (lots of them on my little lavender hedge just now) and can tolerate wasps until the apples are ripe and they get drunk on the windfalls. It's only daddy-long-legs, vile creatures, that put me in a panic.

We've got our annual invasion of corn-flies just now but not as many as in previous years. Last year they settled on my kitchen walls, which are pale green, like thousands of tiny specks of soot. All you can do is wipe them off with a damp cloth - they don't fly away.

Entwisi, wash yer mouth out .. don't wish to put good alcohol at risk, besides only got Bacardi, gin, whisky, wine and champagne .. oh yes, and a bottle of plum wine son off-loaded on me from the Eden Project. ... No vodka. :(
Couldn't find plastic bottle, 'cept one from fabric conditioner, don't think it is going to be ready before I retire though :( Irony is labelled 'Comfort' .. very appropriate .. tee hee.

Like the spray idea though .. sounds cool ;)

Another tip was putting your sheets in the fridge before you go to bed !! For heaven's sake, unless you have a butler to put them back and come and announce "Your bed is prepared Madam" .. would sweat me **** off wrestling with that duvet cover and completely defeat the object.

Hey, some good tips here though.

It's just been on the news that the tar on our roads is melting in the heat. I used to love popping tar bubbles as a kid but got into trouble plenty of times for coming home covered in tar.

I left my hair wet after a shower last night and it kept me cool for several hours (I have a lot of hair). The only problem is that because it has dried naturally without styling, I now look like a gollywog..:D

Driving from Ribchester to Whalley yesterday, some of the back roads were melting. It was like driving through treacle. The newer roads were fine but the back road from the De Tabley towards Brockhall were terrible.

Happily the tread on my new tyres is still legal and not gunked up with tar.:)

The temperature in my office, this afternoon, was 95' F. This was with all the windows wide open (lots of lovely traffic noise and pollution) and desk fans everywhere. It's hard to work in that heat. Re: How are you all staying cool?

All I can say is that I will be glad when summer comes around.

(Ducks and weaves to avoid an assortment of flying missiles thrown by other forum members)

I keep cool by being cool. By that I mean I avoid making any unnecessary movement and if I have to get up from my chair I do so slowly and move around slowly. I also have a constant brew at arms length that is regularly sipped.

All my windows are open as is my only door. A gentle breeze drifts through my room, which is currently at 84 F. That’s er let me see – minus 32, times 5, divided by 9 equals 26.4 C. Or turned around the reported hot spot of 36.4 C divided by 5, multiplied by 9, plus 32 equals 97.52 F. If it gets to 37.8 tomorrow it will be 100 F.

If you take a frying pan outside and leave it in the sun for a while tomorrow, chuck in some sort of cooking oil or fat and break an egg into it, it will fry quite nicely.

The 9th dive bomber fly squadron has invaded my flat and seems hell bent on making my life difficult.

I think 75 was a heatwave and we all thought it couldn't get any hotter then 76 came along and it was even hotter. It was the summer in between leaving St Mary's and going to Paddock House.

Apparently today was the hottest day ever!!!!

West Ender 19-07-2006 21:19

Re: How are you all staying cool?

My memories here are reliable for reasons I'll explain.

1975, the heatwave started on June 2nd and lasted 6 weeks, then just settled into warm and dry. How do I know? Well June 1st was my son's 10th birthday and we were living in Durham City. We got up that morning to find 5" of snow on the ground! I'm not kidding. Next day it was all gone - and it was beautiful weather right up until my husband went to America on business in the September. It went colder then and I couldn't get at the heating boiler to turn it on (I was 6 months pregnant) and had to get the man next door to do it.

1976 was the long hot Summer. We had moved to Cheshire and our youngest child was 6 months old when it started in June. I have vivid memories of trying to keep her cool and get her off to sleep in stifling heat, hotter than in 75, and it lasted well into September when my son started at Grammar School and moaned that his new blazer was too hot.

1977 was very warm around the Jubilee. We had various things going on in the village centre and we sat outside a pub listening to a trad jazz band playing in the village square on a lovely warm night.

So, everybody's right aren't they? :)

ANNE 19-07-2006 21:38

'76 was the long hot summer, as has been said already, when we had droughts and water shortages nationwide. It was also the year Dad decided we need a swimming pool.:)

July of '77 was certainly bad. We were on holiday and it was too wet and choppy to take our boat out everyday for a fortnight.:(
