Re: Endearments
ah thats a local one, thats mainly north west isn't it, here its youth with an f youf, as in 'ya alrite youf ows it gooin. aya bin down yum yet.' we do speak english, honest :D
Derby is one that drifts over this way, which is 'duck' 'meduck' for both sexes, which my uncle uses a lot even though he's born here, and it nearly got him started on one night when he went in a pub and said have ya got change for the phone me duck. she told her regulars that he'd called her a duck, and they were ready to pounce. He came back from the phone and said thanks me duck. dunno what happened but it must have got sorted, I think his girl friend over heard and explained just in time. |

lol i thought does he think i'm a lass cos i got long hair.
|
Re: Endearments
I don't really mind any of the endearments. What I do hate is being shouted of as oi or being whistled at to get my attention (not wolf whistles I'm too old) If folk are too lazy or ignorant to use my name then I'm to ignorant to answer!

Re: Endearments
I hate it when people come to see me in a car and sit outside blowing the horn.
If they have come to see me then they can get out and come to the door. this includes taxis |

Re: Endearments
I call all women "Luv" and all blokes "Mate".. When I was asking the Arsenal ladies team to pose for pics after they won the cup on wed night I got some very odd looks when I said over here Luv or thanks luv or smile luv ...... I guess its not used that much down souf:)
|
Re: Endearments
I know you do, it reminded me when I was writing it kipax :)
No , even in the midlands it's not the done thing. Love here is a couple thing, it's what people call their partners. Your not yorkshire origin are you kipax? I should just add that the reason I dislike 'mate' is because it reminds me of cocky londoners and essex people. Not that they all are, but a lot are. Essex girls are funny though, they always make me smile. |
Re: Endearments
I think it's all down to who's doing the calling - if someone I meet calls me 'mate' or something like that within a few minutes of meeting them then I don't like it but if it's someone that I've known for a while and they do it then I like it.
