New Subway store!!!!
:) I've heard there is a new Subway store coming to Accy town centre.
Any one know where its going to be. Who's not tried a subway yet? Whats your favourite, mines a Ranch. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
I can't wait. I love subway, all we need next is a starbucks. :D
Apparently it will be on Union Street (the one wioth kwicksave on). Anyone know when its gonna be opening? I heard about it a few months back now... |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Subway? Starbucks?
Bog off. I hate all these chains with a passion. What we really need is to get some decent shops back in; I was working around Clitheroe a couple of weeks ago & it's so refreshing not to see Poundlands & phone shops & more chuffing phone shops all over the place! Proper antique shops, materials, arts shops, record shops - you know what I mean. Quirky stuff. It's the quirkiness that is going to attract people to this town not pretending to be a mini-Manchester & actually coming across as a skanky little wannabe town full of drunks & kids with ASBO'S. |

i agree whats going on here ?? i grew up over there and was there till untill a few years back .. i used to so love shopping round accrington was a weekly ritual my mum and me in town each sat ..then came along the arndale ..well that lasted didnt it ?was lovely at first then shopkeepers couldnt afford rents then the last time i was there about 2 yrs ago there was nothing but pound shops and no character accy used to be something to be proud of and then you get an up and coming council that dosent give a damn about what the people want.. must admit blackpool isnt much better .. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
agree with Shakermaker , chains like Starbucks and Subway are blights on the landscape.
No-way can I imgine anyone in Accrington ordering a Double Ristretto Venti Nonfat Organic Chocolate Brownie Cappuccino Extra Hot with Foam and Whipped Cream Upside Down Double Blended . |
never been there?:(
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Did I mention we have a Starbucks at work? :D
Yep, not 100 ft from my desk, Caramel macchiata, yum yum! Subway at least they make it there and then for you. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
I can agree with shakermaker and the rest of you with some aspects, but I don't believe food stores like them have a negative impact like places like poundland do..

re subway

Re: New Subway store!!!!
Maybe if they brought down the rent and rates ... more local people would be interested in opening up a shop...
However its got to be better than empty shops.... |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
The thing is that if groups like Subway and Starbucks come to Accrington it will indicate that there is some investment going into the area. This will instill confidence and encourage smaller, quirky stores to come back to the town.
We can hope! |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Be nice if we had a good book store ... and a Next would be fine ( bit too old now for River Island ) Warner Street could and should be made into a specialist street.... there are some great shops on there: but again its the Rent and the Rates that put locals off... how about a discount for local people, trying to start up: just a thought....yone

Re: New Subway store!!!!
Mmmmmmm Accrington is a poundshop & fast food town  not exactly going to bring any reasonable decent kind of retailing to the town is it?? altho i notice that we do have a cash converter in town now so suppose a little improvement of a well known outlet, could do with more like that.
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
hmmm apparently so - they were recruiting in the telegraph a few weeks ago...
its decent enough. makes a break from the fast food stuff... |

The Subways & Starbucks' of this world make our town look void of any particular presence, of any special worth. Why go to a small Subway which won't fit enough people in and won't have an up-to-date menu (offers, promotions etc) when the Subway in Burnley is a half an hour bus ride away & offers people the proper version; not a miniaturised embarrasing effort. Bad idea. |

Re: New Subway store!!!!
Is it not time Broadway was renamed? Afterall, it's history goes back only to the 1930's when it was created as a throughfare between Blackburn Road and Whalley Road, with the sunken gardens on one side. It's name suggested it's purpose; with the Odeon cinema, perhaps it cheekily emulated it's New York namesake. Now, to use the trendy political euphemism, it is 'no longer fit for purpose'.
Surely a better name today would be "Charity Row" or "Pound Alley"....maybe even "Britcliffe's Folly". Whatever, the addition of a chain coffee or butty shop will only serve to further it's decline. |

I have only had Subway food in Oz....never had any over here.
I agree that chain stores do make all shopping centres look alike....and I wish that Wardleworths was still here.......and YES......I DID buy my books there when it was in Accrington. I prefer subway to KFC or Mc D's though. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
All you'll need then is somwhere decent to eat.
Subway is worse than mcdonalds, all the fillings are prepack and certainly not as fresh as mc donalds food. Your being conned lol And the bread isn't made fresh in store it's part bake. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Have you ever had a mc donalds baguette margaret?
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
thinking about going veggie after watching Gordon Ramsey kill the pigs.......
put me off my normal bacon butty: not had meat since: we'll see what happens this Sunday lunch... Yone |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
No MH.....I tend not to eat in these establishments at all. I prefer to come home and make my own butty....and we only had Subway in Oz because we were too far from our apartment to go back. We were in Adelaide at the time and the Subway was in the Rundle Mall. I have to say it tasted just fine....now whether that was because I was out in the fresh air and was hungrier than normal I can't say.

" Shakermaker u need to get your facts right as in fact every Subway has to stick to strict standards and regulations which includes all the offers, promo`s etc, as they r all independently run by franchisees. Why would a brand new store not have an "up to date menu" ?? I would much rather go to somewhere like Subway where you know the hygiene and food standards are excellent, and you know exactly what u r getting. I recently went to stratford upon avon and the town is full of chains but is absolutely thriving so at the end of the day this is supply and demand, what woukd we rather an old run down town with a few struggling privately owned shops or investment in the town that is providing jobs for the community?? |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Lets see nice big ranch or steaak bake and vannilla slice uuuuuummmmmmm think it would be the ranch with a coke. Whats wrong with having an alternative to Greggs and Oddies? As for Mcdonalds well I have eaten the baguettes and think they are over priced.

It annoys my that in an age where we are aware of all the health risks around - a privilege unknown by generations before us - that councils are allowing this crap to be served as 'food' in our town & aiding the gross obesity we are beginning to see in a large percentage of our youth. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Subway is quite good for you providing you eat the right thing, they specificly state the healthy foods on menus and things inside too.
Its not aiding gross obesity cause some guy did the 'Subway Challenge' type thing (Like mcdonalds supersize me) and lost an awfull lot of weight (although admitidly he exercised too) but the point is its pretty healthy providing you don't pick meatballs with extra cheese every single time you visit ;) |

Re: New Subway store!!!!
Meh I just believe in choice, we don't have to go to subway or mcdonalds if we don't want... but then again there has to be a balance...
E.g. At the moment I have a choice if I go in to poundland or not, but if I continue to do that then eventualy I won't be able to go in to any shops in accrington as they're all going to end up as such shops.. I don't think i've explained that very well :p |

Re: New Subway store!!!!
If you can get addicted to fast food then I am addicted to the hot cooked chicken from Supermarkets. At the end of the day if you vary were you go for a sarnie burger takeaway etc then it shouldnt do you any harm if its in mderation.
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Reference Starbucks.....why would you want to pay so much for a cup of coffee? Especially those sickly sweet things with the whipped cream!
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
The new Subway shop is going to be situated in Union Street where the now defunct Sue Ryder shop used to be.
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
I don't know about over here, but in Oz they are very health conscious and they state which of their products is low calorie, low fat etc....so at the end of the day, it is down to taste and choice.

Re: New Subway store!!!!
So your getting a Subway instead of a charity shop. Thats a good deal isn't it?
Mc Donalds are exellent quality and very very clean as are subway, the kitchens are open you can see how clean they are. Mc Donalds have also added a lot of new products and improved old ones since supersize me. There were no salads or baguettes back then, no apples and no carrot sticks or milk. Gayle is right of course, these are key national stores, they encourage other nationals, which you want a certain amount of in Accrington. They do this because companies know that they encourage families into the town. Kids like fasr food as a treat, you can't get away from that fact, and parents will take them where those outlets are, even if it meant travelling to blackburn. I'm trying to get a Mc Donalds here but no one will listen :( |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Guess the UK McDonalds libel trial had some positive effects , pity it didn't get the same media coverage it deserved here in the US , Here McDonalds are still serving up the same super-sized junk
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Madhatter - you know aswell as anyone that carrott sticks & apple pieces aren't desirable for the kids; they're only there to keep the Food Standards Agency happy.
I'm sorry but to me with these stores, whatever size their products are; it's all commercial plastic junk that makes towns look bland & lifeless. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Desirable to me though, I love carrot sticks.
They are what they are Shakermaker, an I think You see that better than anyone on here. They are fast food, not what I'd class as real food. You do need real food outlets too. They may be bland and lifeless but they attract people, but not if all you've got is Mc ds and a subway, you need other shops too. I always think of them as plastic stores, you expect them, but don't really respect them. |

Salads might not be as popular as a bic mac but they are popular as are the baguettes. I like a chicken ranch salad with a nice cup of tea, or a chicken baguette with a cuppa. Also nice is a side salad with vinegarette dressing and chicken nuggets. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
I worked at McDonalds for two weeks. It was unbelievably clean and their hygiene [sp?] was fantastic. Its suprising how they keep on top of the cleaning etc.
You will be suprised!! |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
wahay just seen where they're building the new store - its in a good place - wud've worked better on broadway but its all good
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Can I destroy it on the accrington flight sim though?
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
i dont think it exists yet
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
To be perfectly honest I don't think McDonalds is in the same league as Subway.....Subway serve fresh healthy sandwiches...McDonalds is just fatty greasy junk food. Has no one ever looked under the paper place mats and looked at their meal's content... it's kind of unreal... and I couldn't actually believe my it when I heard a couple of girls were suing McDonalds for making them obese...and won...that is the most stupid thing i've ever heard.

Re: New Subway store!!!!
Mc D's served salads in Spain way back in the 80's.........I know because I used to take my Ma in there for a garden salad with Marie Rose sauce on it.......it was the only thing I would eat from their establishment.

So thats one 100% Beef, drained of fat and grease burger. Thanks. :D I would agrue that 'Subway' is far to overpriced for what you get. Its probably cheaper to buy a loaf of bread, a whole chicken breast and a fresh salad from th'Asda than buy a Chicken 'Roll' at Subway. Quote:
So thats one frozen, re-heated chicken sandwitch served on a previously hard, now gone soggy roll. Thanks. :D |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
subway also chuck the meat into the microwave as well as the roll
dont get me wrong after a few pints it tastes better than a kebab but as a rule i dont eat microwaved food especialy meat unless drunk as stated above :-) |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
I for one think that this is excellent news. I'm just disappointed that I don't work in Accrington centre anymore. Coming home last night from Preston, I came through Blackburn and I noticed that there is a Subway that has appeared on Preston New Road.
When I still lived in Manchester, a Subway butty was a regular part of my diet, and is something I have missed. The range is fabulous. Something for everyone. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
It is sarah, but it is what it is. just that same as mc d's nice in moderation but no healthier really.

That subway at The Petrol station top of montague street has been there ages as well.

Freshly defrosted part baked dough which is then freshly finished off baking in store does not constitute fresh in my opinion. It's all word play by these stores, not that it's going to kill you, but baked fresh just means that, it's been finished off in the oven god knows how many days after it was originally prepared and started to be baked. It's like me putting a can of heinz soup on the stove and saying it's freshly cooked. |

Re: New Subway store!!!!
I tend to avoid all of these fast food places like the plague and doubt that I'll ever visit the local Subway. McDonalds is dire... My sister worked in one for several years whilst she was at Uni and became quite senior for a part timer. Some of the stories she used to tell about McD's would not surprise you.....yes they were clean, but that's about all. KFC is horrible and greasy and the last time I had a Sub (in New Zealand) it was fairly tasteless.
We have loads of independant local bakeries and butty shops, many of which do use fresh ingredients, bake their own breads, pies etc. In my opinion these places are far superior to the fast food chains both in quality and taste. The only problem with the chains is that they tend to advertise 'fresh' ingredients. Anyone with a couple of brain cells knows that there is a difference between fresh (made from scratch on the day) and fresh frozen (made a couple of weeks ago and heated or baked when required). The 'fresh' referred to by the chains is generally 'fresh frozen.' This also applies to pub chains eg Brewers Fayre where all of the meals are delivered frozen to the pubs then microwaved as they're ordered. Give me a tasty independant establishment anyday.... they win hands down in my opinion. I love and appreciate good food and find it difficult to believe that millions of supposedly sensible people have been conned into thinking that fast food chains are actually good.. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
I suspect the "Fresh" refers to the soggy tomato, cucumber & lettuce these places use to pad out their butties. Its no big secret and if some of the independant shops around Accy were to use the same method and vary their base ingrediants a little more then they would have little to fear from the likes of Subway.
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Some ingredients are frozen at brewers fayre some is prepack, like the steaks, obviously the pie isnt microwaved or the chips, but you can tell it's not fresh, it's not like a carvery.
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
I worked in BF for nearly 7 years. Some meals were frozen, some were cooked on site, yes they were chilled and reheated but most restaurants (irrespective of 'quality') use a cook chill process, it used to be if it was main menu it was generally supplied as is, specials boards were the fresh cooked stuff.
One point that seems to be getting missed is that from the minute veg are picked they start to lose their vitamins etc. Freezing maintains these so that you are getting pretty much teh levels that thay had when picked, fresh veg on teh other hand can be anything up to a week old by the time you buy it then it sits in your fridge for a few days. Not really that good for it IMHO. Similarly with fish and meat, there is no 'damage' done to the structure of the meat so whats the problem. I'd rather know it was defrosted a few hours before it was cooked for me than to think it could have been sat in a fridge for 3-4 days. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
most of the veg at bf is vile, it's under cooked and tastless, I wouldn't give it an animal. I always ask for a nice salad garnish. Some bf are better than others.
Tamworth went through a bad patch, and we complained that much that the manager asked us why we keep coming back if all we do is moan. We had quite a long and embarrasing discussion about quality, why we go there, that we used to like the meals, that it's local to us, and that we shouldn't need to stop going or complain. We should get a full, well cooked, hot meal, not half a one with bits missing (something that still happens) not cold, not burnt. I one had a steak and ale pie that was frozen inside. I also explained I was doing him a favour as we visited many dozens bf while traveling the country and didn't give them a chance, we just went to head office. After that things improved, the problem is though that if you complain, you don't know whats happening to your food next time you go, there's some sick people about. Our local co-op is the same, I've recently pulled the manager about dried cold food. He said the trouble is it's not selling it's just sitting there, to which i replied i'm not suprised, who'd want to eat it. It's in their interest for it to be right, and in your to tell them if it's not. |
Re: New Subway store!!!!
Don't blame the veg for the lack of skill by the chef. If anytyhing I would guess that teh veg is more likely to be overcooked than undercooked as its difficult to undercook veg and make it tasteless.
|
Re: New Subway store!!!!
I dunno how you lot would react to the Jap Canteens....there are several chains down here, one on every street in the City, all serving up the same type of Jap grub...tiny portions of raw fish and raw veg wrapped up in sticky rice...at about 4/5 quid a go. You need about 3 lots to feel full. The only thing that resembles 'owt English is dumplings in a soup - and I think they come smothered in seaweed.

Re: New Subway store!!!!
I'm not that keen on every high street in the world being inhabited by the same global stores, but according to the lovely Kirsty Allsop on Location, Location, Location, the arrival of the coffee shops means investors see an area as being on the way up. This is the same programme that this year listed Hyndburn as being in the top ten places in the UK that were a good place to buy, and that had seen the biggest property price increases last year.
