Accrington Style

Looking down from my lofty perch, I often wonder about the lack of mirrors in Accrington.
As I look at the masses of tracksuited people, white socks peek a booing, cheap gold plated jewellery glinting in the sun, baseball caps perched jauntily on the top of their heads, I wonder did they really look at themselves before leaving the house? Do they really think they look good or stylish or even anything less than sub-human.
I know that the culture of MTV has made role models of rappers from the ghetto, but they have had success and drive Bentleys and Aston Martins while their Lancastrian counterparts ride around on childrens BMX bikes.
Thank goodness as a youth I may have had role models, heroes even, but I did`nt dress like them..... excepting early Midge Ure!:D

Pmsl i think the only time they realise is when they get older & look back at their old photos or reminise of the time, i do laugh & joke to teens being slaves to fashion & the peerage, im glad my parents did stop my attempts at some fashion disasters of the 80's otherwise i'd be burning more piccys now:D

Even better they didnt have camcorders at the ready them days either hehehehe the fun im going to have when mine get older cringe time for them hehehe:D

What ever happened to individuality (big word for this time of day) of a persons dress. Thay hate school uniforms because they all look the same but by the weekend they are in their other uniform.

The mention of Midge Ure as made all your observations about other people's style obsolete.:(:D

OMG those days!!!! I loved my youth, but looking back when i spent a week on hoddlesden moor at the rock concert in an afghan coat and afghan boots and floppy hat i think id die if my daughter walked in looking like that haha, no pics tho thankfully... but just got me thinking of my best mate who came from a very well to do family an all that ,, was a punk rocker with purple hair and used to pinch her dads shirts and rip the sleeves off, she is now a school teacher .. maybe some of those today will come good and look back at themselves with the shock that we do, ah the love of fashion..

SPUGGIE J 25-08-2006 22:12

Considering what they were today to concerts you had the sensible idea cherokee. :D

have no photos of me from leaving junior school till getting wed (early 20s) if fact no-one has.- refused to have them taken my logic being so the police wouldn't have a recent photo. so i have no fashion shame cos nobody can prove it.;) so the only thing i have a bit of shame about is- my logic.;)

Of all the New Romantic type groups, Ultravox were the most stylish, basing their influences on 30s/40s styles. If I said I dressed like Tony Hadley I`d accept your comments with my head hung in shame:D

Whay hang your head you have done nowt wrong. All you did was to look like your hero hell that was one of the things that had to be done when younger (no Tarzens please this is a family sight) :D

The Rindy style jury is still out.:D

Did you have the sideburns and pencil moustache?

Gayle 26-08-2006 15:43

Re: Accrington Style

No, he didn't have the moustache from what I remember although pretty sure he did have the hair.

I'd have to argue with the use of the word 'stylish' when talking about Ultravox - bland and boring might be more appropriate, just like their music!!!!

I agree, bland. A bit more avant garde when local boy John Foxx was their lead singer.

I think it's quite telling their biggest hit Vienna was kept off the number one position by Joe Dolce with 'Shuddup Your Face.':D

I went to see them once (or rather I was taken to see them once) you can guess who with - the support act were Tears for Fears, much better.

Just imagine the pictures in the about 100 year time, historical Accrington will be hillarious. On a serious note though. I work in the town centre (Doorman) at the weekends, & get really fed up with all the "chavs". They can't seem to get it into thier thick skulls, that tracksuits aren't smart, that's why they're not allowed in the pubs. The new nightclub/late pub "Industry" has just stopped allowing stripped jumpers into thier venue. Also all jewelery must be discreet (no massive chains or rings). Fair play to them, at least they're trying to make a difference. 10 years ago i wouldn't have dreamt of going out on a fri/sat night in anything but trousers and a shirt.

Let's hope Sean, P Diddy, Puff Daddy, Coombes, or whatever he's calling himself now, doesn't try to go out in Accy, he'd have no chance.:D

AccyJay 27-08-2006 16:33

Re: Accrington Style

lol, my point is though, that, "industry" might not be the best club in the world, but, it has a nicer atmophere than some of the other venue's in town, due to the lack of "chavs".

Don't know if anyone else has seen some of the students recently, there seems to be a few walking round in jeans, shirts, ties (big knot, short tie) & scruffy trainers. They look like thier entire wardrobe come either out of the attic, or from thier grandad.

Yeah, know what you mean mate. Not many decent clothes shops in Accy:( Not into the tracky pants, rockports ,stripie lacoste jumper and base ball cap myself.Only sports stuff I wear is trainers and footie shirts. Not much choice unless you travel outa town.:(

Re: Accrington Style

Doubt wether any decent shop would survive in Accy without a few others to drag in the punters. So its either like it or lump it. There must be a considerable amount of money taken out of town due to the lack of shops and so what is there suits the "others."

I think you've hit the nail on the head thier Cyfr.Even Bailey's ,if you bought a shirt odds on someone else will be wearing it down town. That I think is the main reason people will always shop out of town.

Re: Accrington Style

If there was ever a big choice brought to Accy in clothes shoes books etc people will be so used to shopping out of Accy that they would still carry on as normal.

Re: Accrington Style

we all go on about the amount of pound shops in Accrington, but i've just notice that there is another amusement arcade (Quicksilver) opening on broadway. It's just next to Ladbrooks. I make that 4 now in the centre alone.

1. Winners on Blackburn Rd (near corner of Church St).

2. Dutton St (Blue something).

3. Union St (opposite Farmfoods)

4. Quicksilver on Broadway.

Is there any need really. Can the council's planning department not see that this isn't what Accrington needs?
