diy smokers

Not sure if in right thread here but im sure it will be moved if not.

just about to embark on a new project of growing our own tobacco.both hubby and i are smokers and one of or fellow allotters has already got his well and truely underway and gave us the site to get our own seeds .
We have bought our seeds which arrived this morning through the post and hubby is off now to prepare the ground ready for first lot..

Now i know it is legal to grow your own tobacco in this country but illegal to sell so we thought we would give it a try .but i wasnt aware that it was possilble to grow but if it does work it makes a lot of sense for a smoker to grow thier own as it means you no longer have to pay the extortionate prices we do for cigs .apperently you dont even need a garden as it can be done in pots according to the website. www.coffinails.com

Did wonder if anyone has tried though and been successful?

Re: diy smokers

I would have thought the problem would lie not in growing the tobacco, but in drying out the leaves.. As far as I am aware, you can't exactly hang your baccy on the washing line - they don't even do that in Cuba or South Africa - so it is ulikely you will be able to hang 'em from the underside of the North Pier.

Still, a fasinating experiment...maybe one day, with global warming, the finest Havannas will have given way to the best Blackpools.

Hehehehehe nice one cherokee you will have to let us know if its successful:D

cherokee 30-08-2006 14:37

Re: diy smokers

well according to the instructions leaves can be hung in a conservatory , outdoor lean to or garage for drying . then transferred to loft until curing. there are 8 pages of instuctions n am not going to type em all off lol.but way i look at it is it must be possible ,(yes even in blackpool) if the guy across from us is on his 3rd year . time and patience and ability to follow intructions might just save me a small fortune if i wish to carry on smoking

be assured i will keep you updated after planting and will put pics on as they develope

I just given up smoking (well, tried). Hadn't had a ciggie for nearly a month, then on Sunday night started again. I'm on about 6 roll-ups per day now, better than the 20-25 a day i was smoking. Back to the chemist tomorrow for some more nicotine patches. Then try again.

Hey Cherokee, maybe your Virginia Cousin can be of some assistance in this endeavor. Wasn't it Sir Walter Raleigh that first brought tobacco over there from Virginia? Send me some seeds (or info on where you got yours) and I'll send the finished product. If Customs has a problem with it we can say we're conducting some sort of Historical Re-inactment:) .

At the moment we are being hit very hard by the "remnants" of that hurricane. With 40 mile-an-hour winds and 5 inches of rain so far, it doesn't feel much like a remnant. It is SO nice to finally break the drought and 90 degree weather.though!

Unfortunetly, the aforementioned weather is causing some big trees and limbs to fall. So while you're all nice, tidy, and warm in your beds, I'll be doing a walk-about the fence-line and checking on the critters!

See Ya!

Brian

As a non-smoker, who never has, why on earth am I reading this thread and wondering if I've discovered another use for my Flatley?
I could rent it out for drying space when not being used for clothes!

Just had a quick shufty at the site. It seems a bit complicated unless you live in the tropics.

How are you going to grow your's? Indoors, outdoors, or in a greenhouse?

Sounds exciting though. Keep us posted on how it goes.:)

Will be doing both Garinda , the guy across from us has his outside and boy do they look good, cant wait to get started. So many people miss out on things through believing they arent possible but I am a big believer in giving things a go even if it does seem like the impossible , and im not affraid of failing because at least i know ive tried. Unfortunatly cant plant until feb so its just a matter of preparing the ground at the moment, but once planted will be posting regular updates and pics

I think waiting for the Spring may be wise.

It says they take 10-12 weeks to grow in frost free conditions, but the way the weather has turned we may be getting frost in 10-12 days.:(:D

Hope you haven't planted them in the swimming pool, like your neighbours in Broughton did, just before they were raided the other day.

Oh sorry, they were growing whacky-baccy.:D

I'm telling ya folks, let your virginian cousin grow it for ya. It was good enough back when the colonist shipped it back from here! Save some seeds for me and I'll bring the finished product over in the fall.

No how about finding seeds to grow my own tea???? Okay, maybe for another thread.

Would the leaves be good enough to make a decent cigar then? As for tea you might need to be in the Rockies somewhere.

Two quick points-
1. My Grandad used to grow his own tobacco after the war and dried it in the airing cupboard so it can be done.

and

2. The majority of cannabis cultivators getting done these days are being caught by the Police helicopters. It is increasingly standard practice to leave the thermal imagining camera on when returning to base from a job. Bobbies then later review the tapes- "Cold roof, cold roof, cold roof, cold roof, RED HOT!!' lets go and have a look at that one"

No point doing that up here as they dont do it in their lofts (majority housing is flats) Besides you should see a thermal image of Grangemouth the towns glow can be seen for miles a bit like when London was being bombed in WWII a lovely pulsating glow.

Easy way to quit smoking: have your surgeon mention that if you don't quit you will die a painful death. Worked for me, that and the surgery. Everytime I feel like getting some smokes I take a long look at my scars.

I gather that smokes are expensive in the UK. Around here they are cheap. On the reserve the Mohawks sell them for $15.00 for a carton of 200. My partner is from the Tyendenaga First Nation and she can get them for $10.00. That would be, let me see, about 75p for a pack of 25.

The other kind of tobacco is only $10.00 a gram.
