Junk Mail.......or snail Spam.

Are you fed up with Junk mail landing on your door mat?

Did you know that you could opt out of receiving Door to Door unaddressed mail?

If you would like to opt out of Junk mail, then you can do so by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

You will then get a form to complete and POST to an Oxford address.

Opting out will not get rid of the items of mail that are to 'The Occupier' as the Royal Mail have a legal obligation to deliver all addressed mail.

The Royal Mail will also warn you that you may not get items of information from Government or local government bodies.....but then anything that the government wants us to know will usually be published in other forums. Royal mail tells us that they cannot filter mail so that advertising matter is separate from government stuff

It takes somewhere in the region of six weeks for the opt out to become effective.......in that time I may just shove all this unwanted mail back into the Royal Mail post box....see if the Royal Mail can filter their junk out of real post!

Royal Mail Door to Door

Opt Outs

Kingsmead House

.
Dear Customer

Thank you for your recent correspondence. I understand from your
letter/telephone call that you are considering Opting Out of receiving
Door to Door items. As a company we are quite happy to put the wheels in
motion to arrange the cessation of these deliveries to your premises but
before doing so, I need to make you fully aware of the implications of
Opting Out and once you have considered these, get your final written
authorisation to cease deliveries of this nature.

The main areas to be considered are:

This service only relates to unaddressed mail. Mail bearing your
address and To the Occupier or any other generic recipient information,
Royal Mail is still legally obliged to deliver.

It is not possible for us to separate advertising material and
information that you may want, such as leaflets from Central and Local
Government and other public bodies. Opting out from Royal Mail Door to Door
stops all unaddressed items.

Opting out means no one at the Delivery point will receive mail of this
nature, is this acceptable to everyone inhabiting the property?

If you simply want to reduce the amount of direct mail addressed in full
to yourself you can do so by registering with The Mailing Preference
Service. They can limit or reduce targeted direct mail by up to 90%. To
obtain an information pack please contact them at:

MPS, DMA House, 70 Margaret St., LONDON, W1W 8SS

www.mpsonline.org.uk

If you still wish to Opt Out of receiving Door to Door, please complete the
form enclosed and return it to the above address and we will process your
request. Every effort will be made to prevent the delivery of Door-to-Door
items by Royal Mail. Exceptionally, if relief staff are used, an
occasional delivery may occur.

Please be advised that it may take up to 6 weeks or more for the
implementation of unaddressed mail to not be delivered by Royal Mail.

Finally, there are, a number of other companies that deliver material
through your letterbox. We have no control over their actions. Again, the
Mailing Preference Service, can offer advice on firms operating in your
area:

Yours sincerely

Barbara Miller

I always do this with adressed , if I get 2 letters, lets say 1 from everest double glazing and another from a credit card company, I send them each others mail using the pre paid envelopes they provide, would love to see them opening their mail thinking they have got a sale :)
I used to remove my details but I don't any more, they might get the message one day :)

Not something I have had trouble with for over a year but for those unlucky enough to be stuck with junk mail it isnt fun and would advise taking up the offer. When I was working away from home I redirected my addressed mail elseware in case of anything inportant being amongst it but on my return there was a small mountain of it behind my door. No wonder the Amazon is shrinking faster than the ice caps.

I like your style K.S.H.
And to save you getting the spam........you can use the form that I have included....most of my spam is filtered out anyway.

Re: Junk Mail.......or snail Spam.

My recyle bag would only be half full if they didn't send you all the junk advertisements. We are being asked to recycle, but there would be much less to recycle if we didn't get all this junk mail.......off thread entirely....I also hate all the excess packaging that comes with everything you buy these days. I am SO fed up with shop girls looking at me like I am from another planet when I refuse plastic carrier bags.

Re: Junk Mail.......or snail Spam.

For heaven's sake Margaret .. what's the problem ??

I just chuck it in the bin .. do try and separate the envelope, which can't be recycled first.

Did you hear the bit about the postman this week who was giving out the aforesaid information leaflets to his customers ? Think he was 'suspended' under further investigation. Seems if the Royal Mail didn't get all this custom, lots of postmen would be out of work ... food for thought .. :D

Margaret Pilkington 31-08-2006 20:39

Re: Junk Mail.......or snail Spam.

Katex....if you want to bin it then that is fine....but I don't want it.....and if there is a way to be rid of it, then I am for taking it.
If I want a service or a product I am quite capable of looking for the information I need. This stuff is unsolicited and as such I shouldn't have to deal with it.
Ok, so it gives the postie something to do.....well, let him deliver articles of addressed mail. We used to get our post before 07:30....now it is sometime 2pm before we get our addressed mail.......and this is supposed to be progress and efficient service.......blimey the Evening telegraph sometimes beats the morning mail....OH....sorry, forgot it is the Lancashire Telegraph now....not the Evening Telegraph.

Gayle 31-08-2006 21:41

Re: Junk Mail.......or snail Spam.

Sorry but I'm with Katex on this one. My white bag is near the door and rubbish mail just goes from doormat to bag without even bothering my brain.

When I was campaigning we were told that advertising mail is only in a person's hand for three seconds and it has only that long to catch the eye before being put into the bin.

Margaret Pilkington 01-09-2006 08:26

Re: Junk Mail.......or snail Spam.

Ok, Gayle....but aren't we being encouraged to use our resources wisely?
I don't know how much paper is used to send out these adverts...or how many man hours are wasted in delivering them to people like you and Katex......who don't even bother to look at them and consign them to the recycle bag.....what I am trying to get at here is that wouldn't it be better not to have received that trash in the first place........then you wouldn't even have it in your hands for 3 seconds....and the bin man too and the postal worker....and anyone else who just happens to be involved in its production. I'm sure all those people could be doing something better.
There must be more people out there who feel like me.

With junk mail, I usually fill the reply paid envelopes with the emptyings from my office hole punch. It`s my little bit for recycling I think.

Re: Junk Mail.......or snail Spam.

I simply send the offending junk mail back to them if it's got a prepaid envelope. This way it cost them twice the amount (1st to send it, 2nd to receive it) & the waste is thier problem, not yours. I admit it's not the best solution, but it gives me a warm feeling inside.

Of course there is Margaret and that is how the Post Office employee was discovered, seems on his round people were complaining and so he advised them re: the above leaflet. Unfortunately, the counters received 72 in a short period of time, which alerted them to the fact that he was offering it first, rather than wait to be asked.

Suppose would be a huge loss of revenue to them as have enough competition now with E-Mails, textes, etc. Can't remember the last time received a hand-written letter sadly.

I suppose the companies must still feel is a viable way of advertising their products or would not keep on doing it, but would be interesting to know how much return they get on these flyers.

The only junk mail i don't mind, is the netto leaflet. I love a bargain. Check out yesterdays computer stuff in it (link below). Unfortunately I do tend to throw the citizen straight into my recycling bag.
