Casino Hell ?
According to the Daily Mail's comments yesterday on this issue, a super casino quote "will encourage more organised crime, drug dealing, loan sharking, prostitution, anti-social behaviour, traffic and noise pollution, and more gambling addicts driven to abject misery and even suicide " Then it goes on to mention that "the Blairite bunch betrays every principle for which the party once stood"
Have no experience of Casino gambling, but, yes, will probably encourage a little more of the above, but I feel a Super Casino will be more of an entertainment venue, than the profound statement above. Casinos are already around anyway .. and you are this type of gambler or not. Did watch quite a lot of the Americans on my recent American owned cruise and some of them were quite obsessed, but only appeared to be an extension of the one armed bandit... mainly women, might I add. Anybody any thoughts on this or personal experiences ? |
Re: Casino Hell ?
Forwomen its more exciting than bingo. Orginised crime can only get involved if the laws rules and regulations are slacke rthan pants 4 sizes too big. There is little or no chance of the kind of casinos and gambling clubs the Americans had. As for addicts there will always be some but they are the ones that have the option to be or not to be addicts the same as any other kind.

Re: Casino Hell ?
You only want loosers then (find them in Accy Town Centre in dodgy clothing))? Seriously though if they are to be these "dens" then I hope there is some kind of counciling and hard facts available before people get in too deep. I like the odd punt on the footy and horses and even the odd game of poker for small cash amounts and have no problems. These places could increase the amount of debt some have as they try to win themselves out of the pickle they are in.

Re: Casino Hell ?
In ten years time Blackpool willl be full of casinos. They arte already turning planning applications down incase they ruin their chances of this super casino. BUT whether they get it or not, as soon as its done and dusted, the applications will be passed. Blackpool will be gambling capital of britain whether they get this super casino or not.

Re: Casino Hell ?
Chris and I go to a casino once every now and then - think the last time we went was about 18 months ago. The trick is to go in with just enough cash in your pocket that you are prepared to lose and leave your credit card at home. Play nice and slowly and don't go mad and it will last all night. You get served drinks whilst you're at the tables and you can have a great time people watching and if you do like I said and be sensible you can have a good night out for around £20.
But I can understand how easy it is to get totally addicted. You see people who aren't even watching properly but are literally throwing money on the tables. They have an almost manic look in their eye and they rarely win. I really think Blackpool should get the super casino but I know it will go to the Dome - it has to! |
Re: Casino Hell ?
How long has the dome got left. The tent only has a limited life span and then it's gone forever, there's no way they could afford to re do that, it's enormous.
Did any of you actually go? |
Re: Casino Hell ?
Agree with Gayle, has to be London .. (sorry Blackpool) ... only there would they be able to keep the security, etc tight as would be a huge attraction to visitors to the U.K., and can't see them putting a trip to Blackpool on their itinerary. It would stay more sophisticated as clientele would be International with more money to spend, not the hen/stag parties that Blackpool is inundated with, and with limited funds.
Would it be ready for the games ? Would indeed do well there and probably put up faster than the Wembley stadium  |
Re: Casino Hell ?
Being outside of the UK I haven't really been following this story , can somebody bring me up to date and explain the differance between a super casino and a regular style casino ( Las Vegas type) , and also is only one being allowed in the whole country
thanks |

If we are going to get one I hope it comes to Blackpool, but like other people have said I bet it goes to that no hope outsider the Millenium Dome.
The comment from the Daily Mail just seems typically anti Labour. If it had been brought in under a Conservative government it would have been given as a shining example of the free market economy, and a great boost for areas needing urban renewal. To me a more worrying trend is on-line gambling, as can be seen recently by the case of the local boy who ran up debts of thirty thousands pounds gambling on his parent's credit cards while they were away for the WEEKEND! |

The only real winner is the cassino owner wether it be on line or down a side street. Personaly I think the govenment is just thinking of all the taxes it will get from these ventures.

Re: Casino Hell ?
Gambling like alcohol has been the curse of mankind since time immemorial and caused more family misery than any other activity. Sadly it will continue that way until there is just one person left on this planet.
So opening up a super casino will only encourage people to spend money that they cannot afford in the hope that they can improve their lot with a big win. A bit like the Lottery really or the football pools of yesteryear. Five years ago when I lived on the Roman Road Estate, Blackburn I would draw my pension from the post office and witness many single mums and those on the dole get their benefits and immediately spend at least $10 on scratch cards. Some, having not won anything, would buy more and more. Fortunately the catchments area for a super casino will not extend to the whole country so its impact on those living at or below the bread line will only be small and local. However there are enough ways to gamble as it is so a new super casino is not needed. |
