Re: Superstitions.
I think the salt thing dates or more correctly originate out of the bible storey of the Pillars of Salt. The don’t look back thingy. Anyway if you spill salt and you don’t homage the fact by throwing over your shoulder (i.e. not looking back) you’ll get bad luck.

Re: Superstitions.
When I see a single magpie I say, "Good morning Mr Magpie. How's your wife?" My daughter salutes them. We're as daft as each other.
The salt thing is because it was so precious, in Roman times part of a soldier's pay was in salt - salary. The devil stands behind you if you spill any of this precious stuff so you throw a bit over your shoulder and into his eyes to make him run off. I don't know what he's supposed to do to you if he stays. Touching wood has something to do with the Spirit of the earth living in trees but I'm a bit vague on that one. I still touch wood though. Who says, "Bless you", when somebody sneezes? I do. I think it goes back to the days of the Plague, which started with sneezing. |
Re: Superstitions.
Cutting your nails on Sunday and Friday. My Nana would throw a wobblie when we were kids if we even thought of doing so.
I still can't bring myself to do it even now. |
Re: Superstitions.
as I was leaving my first real girlfriends house I would always jump over the gate (pathetic, showing off) but sometimes one of her parents would show me to the door and wave me off.. I would open and close the gate and say my goodbyes.. but would wait till they closed the door then jump into the garden and back over the gate!.. wierd but I thought it would bring bad luck if I didn't
