Danger foods

Right lets see if any of you know of any "Danger foods" for instance:

A couple of hours ago i was happily making stew for the kids tea peeled and cut the spuds, no problem.
Peeled and cut the carrots, no problem.
Peeled and cut the onion, no problem.
Boiled the kettle and poured the water not a problem.

Opened the can of corned beef, not a problem went to remove the lid PROBLEM  nearly removed my thumb large raggid gash in my thumb bleeding like hell hurt like hell see the flesh inside the whole shebang!

I was very careful removing the lid as i have cut myself before but the tin kind of slipped out of my hand and then the tin bite me!

So i am declaring Corned beef my number 1 danger food.

What is yours and why?

When you have a shakey hand like mine, which has a mind of its own, all food is dangerous.:D

I particularly hate the sealed plastic packs that bacon, ham, salami etc. comes in. The one with the little bit on the corner that's meant to tear back, and let you peel back the whole top off easily. I've never managed it, and have to result to stabbing about with a knife, which for me, or anyone unfortunate enough to be near me, can be quite quite hazardous.

Those of us without YOUR problem, have that problem! They are just stupid bits of pakaging!

(If they a least gave us a clue by colouring the corner we need), with me it's, do I search for the easy open corner and starve to death or do I risk going in with the knife?

The knife always wins!

:D Don't be sorry.

If I can make just one child smile, an old lady giggle, or Accy Jay roll about laughing, my job here is done, and I can then return to my own planet.

I hate those containers too. I don't think the people who designed them have ever had to open one.

Frozen peas can be quite dangerous. They have a way of sneaking out of the freezer when you're not looking and landing in the pile of washing on its way into the washing machine. Not exactly life threatening but not good.

AccyJay 05-10-2006 16:36

Re: Danger foods

Why do you keep your laundry in front of the freezer. Bizarre

WillowTheWhisp 05-10-2006 16:43

Re: Danger foods

The washing machine is very close to the freezer. When the washing comes down from the laundry basket to the washng machine it rests temporarily upon the floor in front the machine whilst I open the door - the same bit of floor occupied by any renegade pea which may have escaped from said freezer.

My poor baby. I have to agree the dreaded corn beef can has to be one of the biggest hazards ever.
It's about time these confounded things were banned.

Re: Danger foods

Lamb chops .. why do I nearly set my grill pan on fire 80% of the time, have to open the windows 'cause the smoke alarms are going off and open the windows wide, plus the fact no handle on the grill and burnt fingures in the process in my panic to withdraw it away from the elements ??

Maybe, I should not be such a dirty slut and clean it more often. :o

At one time Sainsburys did a round corn beef tin because people complained of the danger,,i dont know whether they still do,i dont shop there any more,

Re: Danger foods

Why does corned beef come in those oblong tins, opened with a silly key, anyway?

Would be so much easier if it was in a normal cylindrical tin. You could open both ends with a tin opener and slide the meat out.

Just going back to your thumb Mummiboo, did it stop bleeding or did you need professional intervention? Are you up to date with your tetinous jabs?:(

Re: Danger foods

Sardine tins that come with a key to roll the lid back are the devil's own invention. I love sardines on toast so I often open a tin of the things.

Half the time, the key snaps off when the lid is only open an inch or two. This necessitates getting a knife to prise the rest of the lid off. As the bit that has been opened is razor-sharp this practice should only be attempted while wearing industrial-strength leather gloves, otherwise lacerated fingers. When the process inevitably results in a buckled, still closed lid, a tin-opener has to be deployed. This is fine until you get to the rounded corners of the tin when the opener jams and you sprain your wrist trying to move it. At this point the tin falls off the opener, always lid-side down, and results in a puddle of oil on the floor. As you step forward to get a cloth, with which to clean up the mess, you skid on the oil and sprain your ankle.

Corned beef tins? Easy-peasy. It takes guts to attempt sardines. :D

A vice and pliers are the best tools for sardines and corned beef tins. :D Never had any trouble with them........ well yet anyway. :p

:rofl38:I usually put a fork handle through the key to turn the thing. Can't get it past halfway otherwise.

Four candles?

I'll try that the next time I attempt to open a tin.

Well it did stop bleeding but its still very deep everyone keeps saying to me to take a trip up to the hospital i do need a tetanus jab anyway so i think i will go just to have it looked at if it were up to me i wouldnt go it not like my thumb is hanging off but its better to be safe than sorry especially when everyone keeps giving me horror stories " you dont know how long that tin of corned beef has been in the warehouse before you got to it" oh you have to have a tetanus you might get lockjaw etc etc...

It hurts more because its on my right thumb and i need to use it for everything!!

WillowTheWhisp 06-10-2006 11:03

Re: Danger foods

If it's quite deep they might glue it for you. When I cut my finger on the knuckle a few years ago I had to have it glued.

Nasty wicked corned beef tin!

Re: Danger foods

I wonder how long it will be before some one sues Fray Bentos for damages incurred in opening a tin of corned beef.

Hope you're healing nicely now, Mummiboo. :)

Re: Danger foods

As I get older and the strength in my fingers dissipates I have problems with ring pulls and the ‘key’ that comes with sardines and corned dog. Not to mention getting my $1 coin back out of a supermarket trolley.

I still prefer to use a can opener whenever possible but sadly that isn’t very often although on some ring pull cans you can still use a can opener at the other end. I believe that they call it progress.

If I can get the ‘key’ to work its way around the corned dog can, usually with the help of a pair of pliers, the real problem is getting the meat out of the can without ending up with several lumps instead of one complete chunk of the said corned dog. Opening a can of sardines is a different ball game though and I’ve given up having sardines. It’s not worth the hassle.

Taking Warfarin concentrates the mind near sharp objects so I am extra careful when opening tins.

Re: Danger foods

I find that any food which I have to attack with a sharp knife to be extremely dangerous....... Honestly I have just filletted my finger whilst peeling and chopping a pineapple...... Ouch!!!:( I am obviously untrustworthy with sharp implements and tend to get any fish or meat filleted for me. I'll be buying tinned pineapple in future.:D

WillowTheWhisp 06-10-2006 17:44

Re: Danger foods

Ring pull tins do my head in too because they ruin my nails but I overcome the problem now by lifting the ring-pull with a blunt knife and then inserting the faithful 'four candles' through the loop and pulling on the whole fork. :D

Which bin do you use for dead bodies?
