Out sourced call centers!!!!

Did anyone see the Channel 4 programme about the "out sourced" call centers, in India, are alleged to have passed on personal details of bank accounts, passwords and pin numbers?

As I was at work wanted to watch it but got sent out and had not noticed that the tape in video was a pre-recorded one so not been able to record it.

Noticed on teletext news that the banks in question have started their own investigations are to be investigated by an outside body (FSA I think)

they're alot more troublesome than theiir worth

the prob was that banks saw the cost cuttin but not the fraudulent implications of such a move to a 3rd world country

u mite aswell build a few in nigeria and hopefully that'll stop those bloody emails...

:rofl38:NOTHING will ever stop those! Have you seen the scambaiters forum? Even when they think you've killed the local police chief and chopped him up in little pieces they are still wlling to do business.

How do these call centres get people's pin numbers? Don't tell me people actually reveal their numbers over the phone !!!:eek:

There's a phone just "sold" on eBay for over £1,000 that is really worth about £70 at most (one for sale in shop in Peel St for £70) bet that was bought by a flippin Nigerian!

Hey we'd best be careful here Mani or somebody might accuse us of being racist :D

Banks always say you should never tell a member of staff your pin number. Those new ones you get sent out by post are computer generated. No human ever lays eyes on them. Counter staff avert their eyes when someone keys in their pin if they are showing somebody how to use the machine. If a customer does tell them the pin they are duty bound to order them a new pin.

Just to confirm as I would at Barclays IT centre in Cheshire. PIN numbers are computer generated and are NEVER stored in unencrypted format anywhere, even on the mainframe itself(In fact they are generated inside a hardware encryption unit that stores only the encrypted value(and we are talking 512bit encryption here !!! ). You should NEVER tell it to anyone even Bank staff as there is absolutely NO reason for them to know it.

I just remembered an email my daughter forwarded to Busman once. It was one of those fun quiz type things and at the end it asked for your email address and email account password! Now why would it want to know that?

I watched Dispatches on Channel 4 yesterday evening Ber999T with growing dismay and concern.

If the allegations were true then it is time that ALL call centres were INSOURCED right away. However if I recall correctly when the first outsourcing took place some people voiced concerns about the data security issue. The banks dismissed the concerns with disdain.

Fortunately my bank (The Royal Bank of Scotland in Blackburn) can still be telephoned and a human being answers.

That's good that you can still call your own branch. RBS was one of the banks featured in the programme last night were Dispatches were able to buy illegal customer data.

Are you sure that it was the RBS garinda not The Bank of Scotland that was mentioned?

I was fairly certain, as I have a friend who works there, and having lived in Scotland realise the difference. I could be wrong though.

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the U.S. Many people are very gullible when it comes to their personal information. But even the cautious are at risk because private data is EVERYWHERE and can be accessed without an enormous amount of effort - no matter what banks and businesses tell us.

Not had much need to use call centres I just call my branch and they deal with it there and then. From what contact I have had with call centres if my hair was long enough I would have none having pulled it out. Got to agree with bullseyebarb that there is no such thing as private data regaurdless of how secure you are told it is. If someone has access then it can be sold altered or even deleted if the person is malicious enough. :(
