Where do you have any evidence that longer sentences equates to less criminals?

They have summary (and extreme) justice in Kenya (based originally on the British system) and it now means crime is out of control because the criminals simply up the stakes as well and Joe Public has to suffer even more, the reverse of what your saying. In the US they have the death penalty but homicide rates are higher, so how's the ultimate deterent not working?

I am no softy.......

...... but I like to think I use some intelligence and I will accept the best answer whether I agreed or not with it in the beginning.

As it stands Denmark seems to have the fewest criminals and lowest re-offending YET have the softest prison system. How? And should we ignore their experiences.

Prisons like holiday camps? Prisons are violent grim places. Violent assaults are common. Universities of crime, not universities in how to behave yourself.

What you are saying is that if we wack the criminals hard they hit society back as hard or even harder? So on that basis a slap on the wrist and an easy time in the pokey leaves less of a mark and less criminal education. Could it not be that the Danes are many years ahead of us in knowing how to behave and more civilised?
