Ok Winters on its way

The nights are getting colder and darker earlier. Had to put the light on about 6.30pm! And i've got a cold. My usual remedy - whisky, lemon, sugar & hot water i cant have so had to buy some lemsips down town today and 3 boxes of tissues and a box of tunes. I got caught in the rain last week and earlier on this week. So really been expecting it. Whats your remedy for colds/flu? Any other ideas will be gratefully accepted seeing as i cant have the whisky etc. That normally works within 48 hours.

Getting back to the thread, I found the Lemsip Max capsules a lot better at releiving the symptoms than normal Lemsip drink.

Take one lemsip “Granny **** will do” add a heaped teaspoon full of brown sugar and two fingers of a good quality brandy, repeat every two hours until you no longer feel the urge to shiver, sneeze or fart. If that doesn’t work seek advise from the NHS Direct Helpline, or the AA.

Hey, that's the "recipe" we grew up on (though my mum used honey). Is that a Lancashire thing or just a general English treatment?

As for being cold, we're supposed to get a freeze tonight. We've got our woodstove heating things up. Nothing like the first fire of the year.

Also for colds, I find buillion and garlic helps ease my symtoms as well as killing the virus!

Be well!

Most people who say they have flu – haven’t. Flu is a virus infection that flattens you although a really heavy cold can do the same but not for as long – thus the mistake.

With flu you get a high temperature, aches and pains in places you forgot existed and most times a sniffley nose, although not always. Also your appetite disappears. Remember the old saying “starve a fever, feed a cold?”

Whilst you have flu you can get chest infections that end up as pneumonia or pleurisy and being ill you are more likely to catch something else so keep away from other people.

There is no cure for a cold except your own body’s natural defences. The best that you can do is try and relieve the symptoms and let it run its course as you body goes into attack mode.

It’s donkey’s years since I had proper flu (annual flu jabs help there) and I get very few rip snorting colds. But when I do I use good old Aspirin to tame the increased temperature, drink plenty of hot drinks (beef tea [Bovril] works for me) and some sort of nasal decongestant, usually Vicks. I also wrap up warm because I keep the room colder than normal. A hot stuffy atmosphere adds to the misery. The Aspirin plays havoc with my Warfarin regime so whilst I am taking Aspirin I reduce the daily Warfarin intake by a gram or two. I usually find that after two days I am well on the way to full health so the Aspirin is discontinued and full Warfarin regime re-instated.

I know I should try Paracetamol or Codein but they just make me pass blood in my water and that is more frightening than reducing my Warfarin intake.

I've just had a cold this week. I usually drink loads of hot blackcurrant or "Vimto". I always wrap up warm & even wear a few layers (jogging pants, T-Shirt & sweatshirt) in bed. This way i only tend to suffer for a couple of days.
