Gobbin ????

Somebody mentioned ......"gobbin" in another thread......now.. I used to have a teacher named gobbin at Accy Grammar.......think his real name was Owen.....however.....I decided to look up gobbin in google....and this was one of the answers........

Gobbin

A gobbin is something you would call someone if you have a personal problem with them.
'Listen man, your a complete f.....' Gobbin aren't you?'

Re: Gobbin ????

this is a subject best left to the users of this group who reside in Oswaldtwistle.....they can explain all .......above the lamp , below the lamp etc. it's a tribal thing, similar to the Hottentots
Being raised an Arroder , I was taught a Gobbin or Gobbiner was someone from the top end of Ossie, but not a West-ender.

Re: Gobbin ????

Tal Mani and Steeljack are all correct. :D

It's a verb describing something which footballers frequently do. It's a similar more friendly insult than the one Tal googled used to describe someone who is a bit of a dope - or locally it's a tribal thing amongst Ossy dwellers.

Re: Gobbin ????

So when does the war paint go on if Ossie is tribal????

Mancie nice bit on the speach could have translated it for those that dont understand it (I do) :)

Was your teacher 'Winky' Owen, who though Welsh, lived in Ossy?

Re: Gobbin ????

I have a book somewhere called 'Gobbin's Tales' which is all about Ossy. I've just searched through all my books but happen I left it in England. As far as I can remember you had to be born near Tinker Brook or the Library.......sorry, memory is failing, lol,..........to be a proper Gobbin.

Failing to find the book I did a search on google and came up with this........strange!!!

Accrington was famous for it's Nori's Great Harwood, for it's mills and fabled snuff, And the Papermill at Rishton was a landmark, As was the stream that wound through Priestly Clough. To scale the mighty Coppice was a conquest, Of late fragmented by a noisy motorway, Like yer 'Lectric and yer Bulloughs, most is gone now, Never more to see the light of Hyndburn's day. Dear old Oswaldtwistle, too, is much devalued, Gobbins' rarely lift their heads o'er Tinker Brook, An' Pit at Huncoat lies a dusty memory, Like it's power station - gone, long since forsook. Branch line stations served the Urban population, With sidings, yards and endless loops and tracks, Whence industry and commerce thrived in tandem, Till Beeching smashed the railways with his axe. An amalgam of these proud old towns and hamlets, Threw up Hyndburn - what an awful choice of name! Still, just look around the townships and consider, Is this cocked up shambles worthy of acclaim? For a home without a heart amounts to nothing, But a soulless place where smiles are seldom seen, Where once proud streets are filled with drunks and litter, 'Tis as though our civic pride has never been. Signs are we're soon to see our Picture Palace, Our furtive Council have at last awarded trumps, But to give us back our pride and reverse the ebbing tide, We need to press all hands back to the pumps. End

Re: Gobbin ????

Gobbiners are those born higher up Ossy than the lamp, which is in front of the library.

There were nearly riots earlier last year, when a certain Peter Britcliffe wanted it relocated across the road, to our pretend town square.

Junetta , good post , I think Derek Gregson is from Arrod , he writes a lot of nostalgic stuff , kind of touching in a Gracie Fields type of way .

It was never going to happen.
I told you at the time it was only a clever political game played at the Area Council to get the people of Ossy on side to apply pressure on LCC to repair the lamp. It worked well, the people were very unhappy at the thought of the lamp moving.

Re: Gobbin ????

If Ossy is tribal then 't'lamp' must surely be it's sacred totem pole. Shift t'lamp? O'er theer deed boddies!

Seem to remember winky owen was a chemistry teacher.....and "gobbin" owen was the maths teacher..who couldn,t run a class without disruption from the nice boys :D

Wynonie Harris 17-10-2006 10:14

Re: Gobbin ????

Yes, Winky Barrel was a chemistry teacher and a very good one at that. A really nice bloke, as well. Gobbin was an elderly chap who was nearing retirement and really couldn't handle a class full of boisterous youths. I remember when I started at AGS in 1962, the Cuban missile crisis was in the news. Some of the more politically-minded pupils organised a "hands off Cuba" march to the Town Hall. There was a picture in the LET of Gobbin remonstrating with them outside the tax office (now Platts Club) at the bottom of Willows Lane. They swept him aside rather like King Canute and carried on regardless.

Bloody Hell! Accy has a hotbed of commy agitation and Castro sympathisers....who would have thought it..how times have changed!

Re: Gobbin ????

To be honest, it was organised by a few beatnik-type guys. The vast majority joined in just for a lark. I hasten to add that I regarded the whole thing with total disdain!

My mother said that Gobbinlanders were the folk that lived in that part of Oswaldtwistle above Union St.

Re: Gobbin ????

This is not the first thread on this subject and I doubt if it will be the last, but just a reminder what or who a Gobbiner was. He/She was someone who was thick, stupid, challenged or simply the village idiot. This was a northern english term and was applied locally to those living in the upper part of Ossy, i.e. beyond the current lamp.

I started something didn't I....? it was me who mentioned Gobbinland in reply to Gayles thread about her Oswald-opoly. I think T has got the right handle on it.

Which end is upper, towards Stanhill or towards Church?

Tealeaf 18-10-2006 09:54

Re: Gobbin ????

Towards Stanhill..i.e. south-west Ossy, or that part of Ossy on the higher ground.

People in Church are far too intelligent to be associated in any way with Gobbins.

No it's definetly to whip crackin' Gayle, as I've always been too individual ever to conform to stereotypes, and have never bought into the whole sexual imagery thing, that I believe originally came from San Francisco, the place of your residence.:D

Come on Gayle, tell us what you eventually settled on.:)
