Silly Sock - NHS
I read an article this afternoon about NHS staff not being allowed to wear "Silly Socks". I didn't give it much more thought, until, i went into my local newsagents and saw the front page of tonights Lancashire Telegraph. I've posted a link below for futher details. It seems however that the hospital managers had a meeting to discuss the issue. What a waste of public money. I agree that there should be some sort of dress code, but this is crazy.

Re: Silly Sock - NHS
Surely a dress code is already in place for NHS staff so it should be adhered to. If the code doesn’t specify the type of tights, stockings or socks then I would interpret that as the choice being up to the wearer.
If I were a patient lying in bed with some illness or injury the last thing on my mind would be the leg attire of the nurse attending to me. If the management want to have a meeting about something they should consider bringing back the rule that nurses must not leave the hospital still wearing the uniform. |
Re: Silly Sock - NHS
These are the same managers that allow most hospitals to fall into debt. I'm sure that the time, money & effort could be better spent trying to save money & provide a better service. Are they now going to employ some sort of fashion police? Any person caught wearing "Humourous socks" will face disciplinary action according to the Evening Telegraph.
Again a serious waste of resourses. |

If however I am on the mend and I catch a glimpse of a 'silly sock', it might just brighten my day a little to know that the person that is dealing with me is human and doesn't always have to have a serious side to them. I thought there was a term, laughter is the best medicine? |

Re: Silly Sock - NHS
I think the local NHS trust could save an awful lot of money by getting rid of some of these managers who have nothing better to do than conjure up silly rules like this. Don't tell me thay are going to have a morning dress parade where someone in authority will inspect the workforce for these banned garments.......and if they want staff to wear particular styles of socks then they should be provided as part of the uniform.
I would be far more inclined to agree that no-one should leave the building in uniform unless they have a full length coat to cover up all of the said uniform. In fact when I was employed by this trust...THAT was uniform policy...though I can't say it was ever upheld. If they are going to discipline members of staff who do not follow the policy, they will soon have their debt problem solved...they will have no nurses to worry about. |

I see that the ‘socks’ issue has escalated to no black underwear.

Re: Silly Sock - NHS
The dress code for nurses in hospitals has to be strictly enforced.. I mean you would not want to be Ill in bed with female nurses attending you with short skirts stockings and suspenders would you!

Re: Silly Sock - NHS
What has underwear got to do with anything? Are they going to start doing striptease acts for the patients now?

Re: Silly Sock - NHS
From what I can gather about the underwear issue is that underwear should not be obviously visible through your uniform, hence no black bras with white uniforms. To be honest that's fair enough, black bras can look trashy under white clothing IMO:D
Tattoos and piercings must be covered up by your clothing. The policy does not say that you cannot have tattoos and piercings, just that they should not be visible. Again, fair enough. Many employers have those same dress codes. The socks thing is just plain ridiculous. I see no relationship between how good a doctor or nurse is and the socks they wear. I did hear a rumour that the sock issue was based on some evidence from one of these useless studies which showed that wearers of novelty socks aren't as productive as their more seriously socked counterparts. Whoever did this alleged study has probably wasted a couple of years of their time, lots of someone else's money and is probably a novelty sock wearing layabout who wishes to stay in Uni all of their life instead of getting a real job..:D ;) |

It amazes me, that these studies & meeting still continue. The amount of time & money that is being wasted is ridiculous. |
