I believe there is a rat infestation.. in the lake next to Asda there is a sign warning not to feed the ducks due to the rats!! Lovely! :-/

Perhaps they should tear it down and start again.
There are some bit's that are a bit scary at night, eg near Scaitcliffe, I've known it to be misty in that area while it's sunny every where else. Must be the smoke from the mills I guess.

And Star St, behind the Antley. Whats all that about. Luckily they've build houses round there, but it used to just end in the freakiest wall and lamp post combo I've ever seen.

Never mind doing the centre up (or down), they need to bring the little bits into the 21st century as well.

Having lived in a big city. I have to say I prefer Accy. Theres a lot to be said for a small town especialy if bringing up kids..

you want to try living in Preston ,
when i moved over here in 1990 i found the people very frendly and helpfull the area was clean and tidy it was like moveing to another world .
this town is great i wouldent move back .

I moved here from Preston around 1990 as well. spooky. I went to Clayton Le Moors for a year or two and now in Accy for hmmm 10+ years

The only thing I miss from Preston is a game of 9 card Don on a Thursday night :)

Slowly but surely set my roots down here.. Kids born here. No intention of ever moving and I am as much a part of Accy as I ever was preston.. Even a season ticket holder on Accy Stanley now.

i used to live in frenchwood (malvern avenue) ist a lot better over here than it ever was there .
at lest people talk to you over here .
the rubbish situation is getting a bit bad here but we are getting new bins which should help .
its only becouse pepole put there rubbish out to soon so the cats and dogs and kids can get in it and spread it about the new bins should stop this.

Last place I lived was down by the river on Hartington rd.. But on Avenham for a while before that (one step down from frenchwood) . Also lived up N H Lane. Plungi, Fylde rd... Moved around preston over the years :)

Accrington is better for bringing up up kids IMHO. More for them to do. clubs and associations after school that you wouldnt let them travel accross Preston for on there own on a friday night.

Although I live in exile in Stockport now, I'll always regard myself as an Accy lad and Accrington will always be "home".

It's a great town which has suffered a lot over the last 40 years from the decline of its traditional industries. But Accringtonians have coped well with this, proving what a resilient bunch of people they are.

I come up regularly on Saturdays in the football season to watch Stanley and I like to have a little mooch around town before the match. It's nice to see the market has moved back to its "proper" place on Peel Street. A great improvement on that concrete umbrella monstrosity - an architectural mistake of the 60's.

Sad to see the much-loved red and blue Accy buses have disappeared, though. The town just doesn't seem the same without them.

with regard the market
i used to run a computer stall on there before i had a heart attack
there was much more space on the old market with lots of storage underneath .
but we had a great time personaly i prefere the old market ,they could have spent halve the money referbishing the old one and the rest on the death trap they call a bus station.

The new market is harder to walk round. As it used to be you could uniformly (is that a word?) walk up and down each isle looking at eather side..

it was but with the money 9.5 million spent on the new one ,
it could have been refurbished new stalls put in
then it would have been a lot better and bigger than the one we have now which by the way is exactley where the market was in 1950 .
they must have had a reason for moveing it in the first place could it be so they could have a bigger market ???
this one is half the size and restricts the bus station.

I remember the old market hall, have they pulled it down then? or are you talikg about the open market?

Both my parents come from Accy and I used to love visiting the grandparents, I went back a few years ago and the deterioration was very sad, the first thing that struck me was the amount of rubbish lying around the backs.

The market hall is still there they are going to do it up.
the open market is round the market hall back in the same place as it was in 1950.

well said forum ad! there was no need for that! I didn't realise so many people thought Accy was such a miserable place to live! If things a re that bad they should get out and stop wasting there lives and making everyone else miserable while there at it!

I miss Preston for the shopping. I lived not far from you Harry x on St georges Rd. You can take the person out of preston, but you can never take Preston out of the person. I am never off the friends reunited site.
It's a case of I get home sick till I pay a visit and then I can't wait to get back home to Accy.
My Hubby loves it here and would NEVER move back. We have made some Good friends over the years we have been here.

Lived in Blackburn for 8 years at one stage. Was glad to come back.

A place is what the people in it make it.

If people put as much energy into doing something about their town as they do running it down, surely things could be better?

I moved out of Accy in 1996 and after living in various places throughout the UK I finally came back in the middle of last year and all I can say is it's good to be back!!!

Yeh it did yuse ta smell in town because of the River Stink (River Hyndburn) was so polluted,many days got a nasty whiff from that pongy water in town,now it's clean in town and the only whiff is Animal Muck ;D from off the hills.

no i am not racist,but when the whites in accrington are slowly becoming the ethnic minority and being treated like 2nd class citizens i have a right to free speech,you try driving your car round accrington windows down and music blaring out,waving large flags out of your car windows, try parking outside the town hall or even driving through the so-called pedestrianised area in front of the town hall,with your music blaring, even when they have weddings in the town hall they are allowed to park all there bww,s mercs and all the top of the range cars on the pavement outside the town hall and on the pedestrian areas also try walking down blackburn road from willows lane towards church,try walikng on the left hand side off the pavement,bloody impossible and its mostly asian delivery drivers or just plain lazy asian drivers who think its their god (sorry allah given right) to do what they want when they want and plead racial harrassment when they are even told they are parking there illegally,no i am not racist BUT THERE SHOULD NOT BE 1 LAW FOR 1 AND 1 LAW FOR THE OTHERS

With regards to the content of your post, its clear you do have racists issues. I see just as many whites breaking the law, perhaps your just blinkered to them though. There are issues that need sorting. Parking is generally ignored wherever you are in Accy unless its a day the wardens turn up, then they only want to do teh streets used by decent people. I challanged one the other week, I'd just driven down Blackburn road and teh amount of cars parked round the bottom of Willows lane was a joke. I told him to walk on ther and have a field day, would he? Not on your nelly.


So alan, stop spouting racist crap if you actually want something done about things get up to see your council leader/traffic super and get something done.

Alan has a knack of sounding racist I have to agree, however, I travel up and down Blackburn road past where Aleks posted a photo the other day, and have to agree that the majority breaking the law there, and on the roundabouts on Willows lane, and who do not give way to traffic coming up the hill etc etc are asian, in particular, taxi drivers, and shop delivery drivers, but as that area is predominantly asian, wouldn't that be expected? and if it were predominantly white populace, would it be any different? I think not, what would change however, is that traffic wardens would frequent the area more, and issue more tickets, were the motorists white. I know this because I used to run a business which was plagued by drivers visiting a mosque on saturdays, but the only parking tickets ever issued in 2 years were before and after the mosque visit, and 99% white drivers.
