Second Life

I've been reading about Second Life for a few weeks. It's basically a way of having the life that you want - the fantasy life.

Anyone on here a member?

Never heard of it before Gayle, so checked it out :D

I was a little perturbed when asked for my credit card details in order to receive linden dollars to spend:eek:

Anyway, they give the option of not giving these details BUT! when I got to the bit where I am asked to d/load "second life client" I decided to back out! Have YOU joined?

OMG! When I joined (for free) with a user name, I tried to view the forum, and this is what greeted me:

Re: Second Life

Hmm I think I'll pass on paying out real money in order to get some virtual money to live a virtual life.

lettie 30-10-2006 07:19

Re: Second Life

I'll give it a miss if it's asking for credit card details but I do have a question...

Why would anyone want a second life?

This life is difficult enough and although your second life is virtual and allows you to do all of the things you really want to do, shouldn't we be concentrating on what we want to do in our real lives???

The way that I see it is that life is what you make of it. Nobody else is responsible for our happiness, we are responsible for our own and how we cope with the ups and downs of life.

I like my life and have had a few ups and downs but I have always bounced back from the downs as a stronger person. I think I'll give the option of a second life a miss and concentrate on the life I have now. It may not be perfect but it's real and it's mine..:D

garinda 30-10-2006 07:21

Re: Second Life

I read it too.

Sounds a right load of old tripe.

Why bother, when you can be whoever you want to be on the virtual life that is Accy Web?:D

I think I will just concentrate on getting my life virutally right rather than trying a virtual one!!! get my drift  :D

Re: Second Life

I was interested enough to sign up a few weeks ago. You dont need a credit card to sign up for the free account to see what its like (although im not sure if I added my paypal account when I signed up as identification, either way you are not charged unless you buy ingame money.)

I really havnt ventured far enough to see what its like, the Linux client is.. buggy to say the least.

Have you tried signing up without a card? Im sure it says you can add one later you just dont get the bonus amount of ingame money?

WillowTheWhisp 30-10-2006 10:47

Re: Second Life

It appears that you can sign up without a card but can't get on the forum without one. To have to give your card details just to get on a forum seems a bit iffy. I'll stick to AccyWeb.

Gayle 30-10-2006 12:36

Re: Second Life

They have about 1.25million people signed up and after the huge articles I've read about it in lately I'm sure it will increase. Haven't joined myself - I only just have enough time for this life, can't find time for another one.

jambutty 30-10-2006 12:57

Re: Second Life

I haven’t finished with my first life yet so I’m not interested in a second one, virtual at that.

In any case I can have a second life in my head if I want to. At least in my ‘head’ life not only do I have control of the life that I would lead, I could also control those that share it.

But it is always useful to read about these strange sites, so thanks Gayle.

Well it looks fun to me, if I could run the programme I'd be joining it (don't ask :( my pc is a dinosaur!) It just looks like an online Sims type game. Any fan of Sims like me would probably love it. Get my pc sorted and I'l be a second life saddo no probs! :D

There used to be the option were you could buy a virtual bikini/swimming shorts in the Accy Web chatroom jacuzzi, not many people bothered though.;)

Tinks did use her virtual dosh to but some shatter proof glasses though, which came in handy, and saved people from getting virtual cuts.:D

PMSL I forgot that.:p

I hope he didn't spend too many virtual dollars on it, as it was the wrong size.

Infact it looked more like it was meant for a lady, or to cut cheese.:D

Re: Second Life

Just to revive this read, I have taken up Second Life again today and it is really quite fun.

I have spent no money and yet acquired a nice suit, (and a ladies ball gown which I gave to my friend) along with a nice pair of earrings for her.

Had a nice dance in a lovely ballroom, which included lots of music too! Quite fun.

Re: Second Life

Tonight I was just catching up with the Sunday Times magazine from last week, and it had an indepth article about SL.

People are making money from virtual businesses that are trading in Second Life. Totally weird.

I might join up, and start and edit a fashion magazine.

'The Rindy Wears Prada.'

If I don't come back, it's been your pleasure knowing me in this reality.

Tat-a.:D

People sell a lot of fashion which they have designed in photoshop and things.

There is a woman from China (I think) who has made over 1million $ buying and selling property on Second Life!

Yeah I read that. Virtual estate agents, how boring must they be.

I don't think the long term investment of a SL property will be that great though.:D

Well I did it :D ..... and as Cyfr said it's really quite fun!

To the doubting Thomas's that said it was a rip off, your VERY wrong you don't need to part with any real money to enjoy second life. Just keep clicking skip this bit at the money bits when registering.

As I said earlier a fan of Sims will love it.

The only problem I've encountered is the reliability with it but I have realise how masssive this programme actually is. You could quite easily play this game for a year and not see the same place twice.

The possibilities for fun when your bored are endless! I'm no good at building and scripting programmes (too techie for me although there are tutorial courses in second life) so I just spend my time shopping and clubbing

I'M A SECOND LIFE SADDO AND I LOVE IT!!!:D

That's another problem, the system requirements are quite specific ..... 2/3 people I have recommended it to can't run it :(

Slinky manages to run it ... we gatecrashed a sex club the other night! We kept our avatars virginal but left lots of embarrassed male avatars in our path!! .... :rofl38:

nVidia GeForce FX 5600, GeForce 6600, or better
OR ATI Radeon 9600, X600, or better

the list that aren't is quite comprehensive
  • nVidia cards that report as a RIVA TNT or TNT2
  • ATI cards that report as RAGE or RAGE PRO
  • ATI cards that report as RADEON 320M, 340M, 345M, or similar model numbers
  • Intel
  • Intel Extreme
  • 3DFX
  • RIVA
  • TNT
  • SiS
  • S3
  • S3TC
  • Savage
  • Twister
  • Rage

It just needs one that can actually generate 3D without sharing memory, eg a proper graphics card and not one thats 10years old :p

Some of the ones it works on im sure are like £20/£30 which is very inexpensive for a graphics card, and quite frankly I dunno how people run games with anything lower!!

S3 are crappy graphics cards, but on the bright side they're good for things like laptops because people dont need good graphics in laptops since they most likely wont be using them for games :p

I did start learning scripting at one point but I kind of lost interest because at the time I was having connection problems to second life which meant it took *forever* for things to load.

It does seem daft that they are considering prosecuting people for their virtual actions, in what when all is said and done is a game, with an off button as Tinks said.

Perhaps people that play compter driving games will in future be done for dangerous driving, or speeding. :D
