I officially live in Blackburn, and I get a warm welcome in Accy, and I prefer it much more than Blackburn.

Mick 15-08-2003 14:14

The warm welcome we got then we moved here was one of the resons we stayed
allways helpfull too :D

Accy is deffo a better place than either Blackburn or Preston.

Its smaller and I find smaller places are better. especialy for bringing up kids. I ahve lived in blackburn and for the most part Preston and Accy beats both easy.

Re: Outsiders

Me too. Lived in Blackburn for 8 years, was glad to come home to Accy. Was in Blackburn the other day. It just doesn't have Accy's friendly atmosphere.

And never mind our bustation, their set up's a nightmare

Re: Outsiders

When I lived in Black burn (25 yrs ago for maybe 2 or 3 years) It used to stink in the town center on a hot day..of hops or whatever the breweries used.

I remember that!
Also used to live in Little Harwood further up than the Matthew Brown brewery, it was the same up there. Think that one's now closed though, not sure.   And Thwaites in the centre doesn't seem anywhere near as bad, but you can still smell it sometimes.

Re: Outsiders

We lived in Blackburn for a while. Stayed with friends just before move here.
It`s a nasty smelly hole that thinks erecting stupid statues a priority over much needed hospital beds.

Who put that big 60 foot button on the front of blackburn cathederal... that was clever wasnt it ...

When I left home at 16 I lived all over the country (Even on the wrong side of the Pennines).  In seven years my accent had changed that much that people thought I was a scouser.

Re: Outsiders

Lived in Accy all my life, have relatives all over the country and they have always been made welcome when they have visited here. They think it is so friendly here that a couple of cousins are considering moving here. Work in Blackburn, and have to agree that it is a smelly sh*thole. [smiley=pain30.gif]

I always had the **** taken out of me when I moved over here and still do occasionally. I don’t know I always enjoy coming home to Accy; even those that don’t like me are decent people and go out of their way to accommodate. I think there’s always been a friendly element to people in the East Lancashire area, particularly around Accrington. Maybe it steams from the necessity to depend on the community and neighbours during crises, not just the pals, but the nature of the hardships suffered in the Mines and Mills throughout history.

Re: Outsiders

I have been gone from Burnley fifty six years now. Every time I come back for a visit I am always warmly welcomed by my surviving cousins, old school friends, former neighbors, et al. Unfortunately, I find their numbers shrinking alarmingly when I visit these days. I soon revert to my "Lanky" idioms, speech mannerisms and eating habits -- black puddings and tripe & trotters (what happened to the UCP?).

To me, the real heart of Lancashire warmth is to be found from Accrington and its surrounding area -- including Oswaldtwistle, Church, Rishton, etc. through the Burnley area -- including Hapton Valley, Rosegrove, Lowerhouse, Padiham, Haslingden, Nelson and Colne and over to Rawtenstall, Bacup and Todmorden (even though the latter is borderline White Rose country). That area coincidentally covers most of my teenage Lancashire League Cricket and Saturday night dancing venues.

all this stuff about the folks in Hyndburn being super friendly is a load of tripe , most are just nosey bu**ers who want to know your business

Re: Outsiders

When i moved back to Accy from down south 30 odd years ago,i spent 6 months indoors, kicking myself for making the biggest cock up of my life.Found the nightlife far more intimidating & the laid back lifestyle i was leading replaced by grey skies and aggressive people. One d***head even tried to headbutt me for accidently stepping on his shoe in the very busy(at the time) outdoor market:mad: .Having said that,i have got used to living here & on the whole, with one or two exceptions, have found the people far friendlier than i first thought:)
