it saddens me to think that some perverted person achieved some pleasure out of this mindless act of vandalism.

And yes.....with one camera per 14 people...why was the culprit not seen and apprehended.......whoever it is, needs to have a sensitive bit of their anatomy snapped off

Bloody idiots.:(

It's their/our own envirinment they are spoiling.

If I found them I'd whip them to within an inch of their lives with the broken tree.

Urgently wanted for questioning, after having been seen leaving a kebab shop in Church Street, and then heading towards Burnley Road, in a drunken fashion at approximately 2.45am Saturday 4th November, 2006.

Mimi has just informed me that this damage has been done since Thursday at least. Why haven't the council taken action?

It would take just a minute or less to remove the tree at its broken trunk so that at least it is less obvious. At the time of taking the photo, the gent in the picture shows his displeasure in his face, multiply that a few hundred times on a Saturday - - -

That's really ashame. Why can't kids these days enjoy the old pasttime of cow tipping. It's so much more challenging.

I do hope they catch the little buggers. Nice punishment for em (after Rindy gets through with em) would be to put em in pink coveralls and have them all scrub the walks with toothbrushes!:) IMHO;)

cctv is ok but where are the local cops , why are they not walking the town center beat, one of the 'worst' moments in my life was being grabbed by the scruff of the neck by a foot patrol cop whilst in the middle of a quick s**g in a recessed doorway in the Warner st. shopping arcade , aside from threats to notify the girls parents and arrest me for public intoxication/indecency the possibility of our names and addresses appearing in the local press was enough for us to proceed quietly on our way home, (me with my tail between my legs )

Why, was only having a quick s**g .. snog, wasn't he ? That not bad.

This incident has really upset me ... it does beggar belief .. like everyone else, just don't get it .

What will they do to replace it .. will they have to plant another sapling, or can it be put together again with sticky plaster ? .. well, you know, something like that.

What on earth do these nunpties gain from doing such a thing? Did that poor tree look at them the wrong way or hit them on the way past? It must have been a real hard man that did this and he must be walking around bragging about the night he took a tree on and won. Wouldnt matter if it was caught on CCTV because if he was arrested and taken before the beaks it would have been a case of exuberent youthful jinx slap on the wrist and dont do it again.

Well, Monday 6th November 9pm. Do we know if the council have bothered to remove this poor tree yet? Bloody useless. Like the fact that litter is left to blow all over broadway all weekend. In Manchester the cleaners are out at the end of every day making it ready for the next one.
PS Chewing gum should be banned. People who need to permanently chew must have evolved from cows. (thats an insult to the cows!).

How is that the Council's fault. Have you ever tried to remove it from outside your own house? Then multiply that effort a few hundred times and then say its HBC's fault. It is the dirty little gits who drop its fault.

It's the council's responsibility to sort it out, they've spent all that money on the embarassment of broadway when all it needed was a good clean.
It looked far better when the flower beds were about.

Too many people just say "bloody Kids Again"

There is an aerosol spray which quickly freezes the gum and it can be then easily scraped off. Trouble is that it is manual work - just like taking away a damaged tree:eek:

The Tree Council’s
National Tree Week
22 November – 3 December 2006
This is the Tree Council’s festival to mark the start of the tree planting season, and a nationwide celebration of trees and woods. Across the country there will be lots of opportunities to plant trees, or to take part in events, walks, talks, songs, story-telling and tree dressing.

It's only recently been planted in the latest doing up of Broadway. Of course it matters. That doesn't mean that murders muggings and break-ins don't mean anything but just because these other awful things happen does it mean we should turn a blind eye to wanton vandlism and the length of time it took anybody to shift the dead chunk?

Perhaps if vandalism could be nipped in the bud (pardon the pun) then they wouldn't go on to commit worse offences.

We just happen to care about the town. Anything wrong with that?

If everyone thought like you, we'd be living in a sh*t tip.

It may only be one tree, but it's indicative of the mindless attitude of a few, who spoil the quality of life for the majority.

Eeew hek, that got him goin ! pity you didn't 'add you and whose army'

Just that the oak trees were meant as a symbol of Accrington, if you care to read our history, and was important to a lot of us. There are always other more serious crimes to attend to I know, but you can't relate it to this vandalism. I thought it represented 'our town' full stop and was a good effort to bring back a little bit of pride to the town, that is why I find it extremely sad.

Do I have 'mugchops' ?? :(

So?

Let the people who see this act of vandalism as just one more small way our environment is being made worse by a moronic minority, and have a moan, and go and start a thread about the bigger picture, and the real 'problems Accy has'.

Cut down one tree, no big deal. Cut down a thousand and you have a desert.

Re: One Down - Several to Go!

It doesn't compare to harvesting a tree for paper - that is controlled forestry. This is destructive vandalism. It's not about the tree itself. It's about the mentality of destruction for the sake of destruction - like the idiot who thinks it's fun to scratch the side of your car with a key and make a nice wavy line all the way along it. No big deal in the ultimate scheme of things but no joke for the car owner.

Because other things more serious happen why should we ignore vandalsm?

Just because Willow started a thread about an act of vandalism in an area that was recently renovated at public huge cost, and people commented on it, just shows concern, not a mass out pouring of hysteria.

Still waiting for you to leave this frivolous thread, and start one about the much more serious problems we face in Hyndburn.

Like I said, I am very much looking forward to your thread on the more serious issues in Accrington, and look forward to posting in it.

In the great scheme of things it's not up there with ethnic cleansing, war, and starvation, but you could apply that to most things, people getting giddy about sport for instance.;)

Yeh, you see Mancie, still a crime and should be zero tolerance rated as next time these vandals could and will do a lot worse .. please understand that. They have committed a crime against all the Council Tax payers of Hyndburn after all, even you.

There were probably people saying similar things to you in Germany when the very first shop was daubed with Juden.

'Oh it doesn't really matter, it's only a small act of vandalism.'

Iv'e seen it all.. people can post statements that amount to calling for mass murder, but if you dare to show small regard for a tree that will probably survive the rigours it has seen, then you are blasted!.. it really does seem to to get out of hand.. I do wonder what the first impressions to this site must be.. like my own that judged members as neo nazis that had little regard for people with the opinoin that differed from there own.. my opinion has changed but beware.

If he pays council tax.

We all pay for the way things in town and city centres and it is maddeningwhen some butt wipe decides to destroy it for a laugh. Me I would like the courts to order the destruction of something they cherish and do it in front of them. Lets start with putting their trendy cloths in a skip and burning them quickly followed by there music centre music collection and prized skateboard.

It may possibly survive, but it won't match the rest. A matching set of trees (whether we actually liked or approved of the choice of tree) was planted on Broadway at the expense of us council tax payers and now that one of them has been vandalsed it will either have to be replaced at the expense of us council tax payers or remain forever there (which knowing HBC is the far more likely scenario) in it's lopped-off vandalsed condition as a reminder of the mindless yobs who frequent our town centre. But hey-ho nobody died so it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter that it is illustrating to the casual visitor that Accrington residents are so used to wanton destruction that they don't even bother when the mess isn't even cleared away for a whole week. Some of us would like to attract people to our town, attract better shops which would encourage more people to come here. We see this as one more step on a slippery downward slope instead of another rung up the ladder.

Yesterday I was in town with a bit of time to spare (the queue in the post office wasn't as long as I'd expected it to be) so I thought I'd have a stroll round and look for some Christmas pressies. Good Grief it finally came home to me how pityfully few and far between are the shops which actually stock nice tasteful items. I don't really want to be buying presents from pound shops and charity shops. Shops I once would have gone to are no longer there. Do we really want the town to deteriorate even further or would we like to see it rise like a phoenix from the ashes (or in this case rubble and mess) and go on to greater heights? I did find a nice shop or three in Warner Street and managed to get a few things.

Think of it this way. If you'd spent your hard earned cash on a lovely new car and parked it outside in your driveway, then somebody comes along in the night and rips the bonnet off just for the sheer fun of it. Never mind, you can always put a piece of rusty old corrugated iron there in place of it. That will keep the engine dry, it will serve its purpose. It will also look bloomin' awful and I'm sure you wouldn't be proud to drive your vehicle anywhere you could be seen by anyone who knows you.

Hopefully the first impressions of this site will be of people who actually care about their envronment and not of people who think it doesn't matter how much destruction takes place.:)

Can we get back to the chewing gum issue?I recall a couple of years back seeing a van knocking around with GumBusters written on the side.I assumed it was a private company who removed chewing gum from our streets.Have'nt seen it since, but a cracking idea, since the council can't be arsed to do anything about it.And on a footnote how long does it take to finish off the top end of Broadway?Am i the only one who thought that it was included in the original cost of redeveloping Broadway & not as extra expense some months after the initial redevelopment. They've been at it months, and you can guarentee sme part will need digging up again a few months down the line:mad:

Maybe gum busting isn't a profitable business, after all it has to be paid for out of our council tax and HBC would rather spend on other important things like, er.....like........er.............

Moran's are still finishing off the top bit of Broadway and that involves some more trees, hopefully someone will have asked them to get a replacement for the broken one!
