When is a sports college not a sports college?

:D Moorhead High School, according to its letterheads is now a sports college - but not according to its bank account. Cheques still have to be made payable to Moorhead High School. But what really puzzles me is why my daughter has to trail down to the Hyndburn Sports Centre Wednesdays and Fridays for "gym" !!! ???

Re: When is a sports college not a sports college?

This was always a pain in the aris when I was there too. Trek all the way to the sports centre then all the way back!!! with heavy bags and everything.:(

Re: When is a sports college not a sports college?

But it's even madder isn't when the flippin school has a gym of its own and is now called a sports college? My girls even have little lapel pin badges with it on.

Re: When is a sports college not a sports college?

Well yeah!! it wasn't a sports collage when I attended. You would think now if it has the title sports collage it would actually have the goodies to back it's name up........I see good old Moorhead never changed lol.

Did your gym classes take up a whole afternoon/morning?15 minutes there, get changed, hour in gym, showered & changed, mill around, wait for stragglers, head count,20 minutes back(uphill).Being a gym user at HSC,i noticed that quite a few school users had no idea how to use the machines properley & to some it was like playtime with weights. When it was the old, smaller gym at HSC many paying customers complained they could'nt use the machines they wanted when schoolkids were in.You'd have thought with the money spent at Moorhead they would have at least installed decent gym facilities

Yes it did take a while, but, mine was the last lesson of the day so I didn't bother having a shower ( hence having a lesbian teacher that took pride of place in the shower cubicles while you showered) :o so I used to go straight home and have a bath. well when you're a kid it is embarrasing enough having a shower infront of everyone else, let alone all the teachers too.

Why not phone them and ask Willow, make sure you tell them how you feel about them still using the Sports Centre (Neil will be getting a slap this evening).

I suspect its because they have not built the new facilities yet from the money they got but I am probably wrong again.

They had a gym when I was there which was mumblemumble years before Slinky went. They have two things, one called a sports hall and one called a gym now! It just seems a bit ironic that they are using the sports centre. :D

And for the privaledge of using Hyndburn Sports Center it costs us £1 a session twice a week.

Re: When is a sports college not a sports college?

Hehehehe sounds like nowt has changed at Moorhead then, we used to go to the HSC but also we went to Victoria Mills for areobics so both quite a trek. Al of the local high schools have a fancy college title now, Mount Carmel is science collge, The Hollins is the technical college, Ryddings is business college etc, me wonders what is the difference? is it specialist or what

When were u there Slinky? I went to Moorhead and we all had our suspicions the PE Teacher was gay after spending all her time in the girls dressing rooms!

CASPER 09-11-2006 12:06

Re: When is a sports college not a sports college?

The Gym at the sports centre is actually a fitness centre with all sorts of equipment. One question would be, Is it financially viable to build a fitness centre at Moorhead with the same amount of equipment or could the money be better spent on other areas of the curriculum?
Which ever answer you think would be the best option, it still takes time to achieve.
The school will receive extra money, but it is not an unlimited amount and not limited to improving the sports facilities which are already excellent.

Ah, so does this mean things like treadmills and excercise bikes and rowing machines as opposed to the wallbars and climbing ropes?

Yes, all of this equipment is extremely expensive, and another probllem could come under insurance. In today's "claim everything" climate, the school would be wary of being sued for any injuries. sad isn't it.

WillowTheWhisp 09-11-2006 15:46

Re: When is a sports college not a sports college?

It's especially sad consdering the school is a sports college so I hope they never are sued for sports related injuries. It just makes a mockery of the whole thing.

In my day we just had to make do with climbing up the monkey bars, danglng from ropes and leaping over vaulting horses. My favourite place was hanging upside down from the top of the wallbars. We used to sneak in and do that in the dinner hour but we'd get a rocket if any teachers found us.

Sports College?
Do they do any courses to do with sports? A-level in weightlifting or treadmills perhaps!

Does this mean that education is a nonstarter and the next generation of Olympic Champions are going to walk out of Moorhead? Fit, agile and the qualifications of a non attender ie none. As to why the sports centre I surmise that Moorhead cannot afford the tools to go with the new title.

Update on the trip to the Sports Centre from Mimi - she lost a whole 20 calories on one of the machines! She wondered why I didn't look suitably impressed :D

The rubbish who leaves behnd, where? Users of the Sports Centre outside the Sports Centre? Schoolchildren at school? Moorhead pupils who use the Sports Centre?

CASPER 11-11-2006 14:13

Re: When is a sports college not a sports college?

It can't be the area surrounding the school as they all stay in school at dinner. Don't know about the morning though.

I do know that last term some students volunteered to " clean up in the community" and gave up their own time after school to do this. Not as easy to do this term as it goes dark early.

WillowTheWhisp 11-11-2006 14:46

Re: When is a sports college not a sports college?

Some are either coming or going from the Sports Centre at dinner time aren't they so perhaps he means there?

Isn't that typical? The poor teachers can never win! She is female and spends her time with the girls therefore she is a lesbian, but if the teacher had been a bloke and spent his time showering with the girls I suppose you would have called him a, 'dirty old man'.

No wonder no-one wants to teach these days!:D
