We Have Heating ....

Yea, was as warm as toast last night, had central heating put in yesterday. Got up this morning to boost it for 1 hour and i have a red flashing light on the boiler. Cant ignite the damn thing  .... will have to wait till later for the electricians to do it when they come around to put in the thermostat on the wall and strip out the old economy 7 heating wires.

Got to give the lads their dues, the team i had were lovely, polite and respected my home.

Check the pressure in the system, if it has a small leak it will lose pressure and shut down to protect the pump

Re: We Have Heating ....

Hope it's all under control soon. We had a few days without central heating after our boiler had been serviced by the most annoying BG bod I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. Then we got an independant guy to come and look at it and he put right what the BG guy had messed up and all is warm as toast again in Whispland. However did we cope in the olden days before central heating when we had frost on the insides of the bedroom windows?

Trust me to get the iffy boiler, lol.

Ian
Just had the electricain come and check it, the plumbers need to come back, as its lost its pressure.
Cheers for that.

Hope you don't have to wait long for it to be fixed.

I have to wait for my new central heating and as I understand it everything comes out radiators hot water tank boiler electrics etc. I am lead to believe that it will be very messy and will take half a dozen of them several hours. :(

Is it the new heating system that the council are putting in as part of the takeover?

jimmi5bellies 16-11-2006 08:37

Re: We Have Heating ....

Yes accymel, its the one the council are putting in as part of the takeover.
It is quite messy, they put cloths down over your carpet but when they are having to drill through solid concrete walls dust gets everywhere. Ill take some photos of the plumbing, youll laugh your pants off !

jimmi5bellies 16-11-2006 08:57

Re: We Have Heating ....

Right now bearing in mind, im in a ground floor flat with concrete flooring, hence drilling through walls .... Upstairs flats have the piping running down the wall from the loft. Dont know how houses are done or if they lift the floor boards up.

I am led to believe that the piped will be boxed in, but dont know when. The electricians will be in later to rip out old wiring, dont know how messy that will be or what the walls will look like after ...... watch this space.

Nobody as of yet, that i know has been told or recieved any form of compensation for redecorating.

entwisi 16-11-2006 09:07

Re: We Have Heating ....

They should box in the pipes or your kids could accidentally burn themselves on them. (they would be expected to know a radiator is hot, not so a pipe) It will also make them easier to decorate (paint etc)

One thing to watch with teh boiler is that whilst they do need an occasional top up it shouldn't be more than once a month or so. Any more and get them back to check teh expansion chamber as it is a duff one of these that tends to squirt water out the safety valve to be vented outside(Dont ask how I know this Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)

Neil 16-11-2006 10:16

Re: We Have Heating ....

The reason the boiler will not run if the system pressure is low is not only to protect the pump. The system pressure is the only way the boiler knows there is any water in the system.

I don't like the fact they have fitted thermostatic valves and then surface run all the circulation pipes. If they are not at least boxed in, insulated would be ideal, your thermostatic valve will shut off when the room is warm enough but, the room will still be heated by the pipes themselves.
When you use thermostatic valves the heating is on all the time as selected on the time switch, and water is running around the pipes. Each thermostatic valve opens and closes as needed to keep the room at the temperature set on the valve. The burner comes on and off to keep the circulating water hot enough. If you are loosing heat from the circulation pipes the burner will run more often using more gas. On a system where all the pipes are run on the walls without any insulation like your new system is, you might find some room are too hot even with the radiator valve turned off.

entwisi 16-11-2006 10:23

Re: We Have Heating ....

IIRC at least one radiator has to be open valved anyway or it can cause the boiler to break. (I seem to think that was what we were told by our plumber, we chose the towel radiator in teh bathroom). Our boiler only runs for a couple of hours each day for heating water is on demand

Blimey we've got that to come yet although looking forward to a nice warm house but sounds like its going to be an upheaval, tho nice pipes :rofl38:

Re: We Have Heating ....

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh thats Neil ..... very technical stuff there. lol . Plumber has just been and done the pressure, checked all radiators are ok and not leaking . Says it could have been the plumbing settling in and that caused the pressure drop.

WillowTheWhisp 16-11-2006 10:50

Re: We Have Heating ....

Our pipes come up through the floorboards as you imaginef Chrissie. We once stayed in a B&B which had surface piping and the room was boiling hot even with the radiators off because the pipes chucked out as much heat!

Neil 16-11-2006 10:53

That is what a lot of plumbers think. You can add a bypass valve in the circuit but many boilers have them built in. When all the valves close there is no return path for the water to flow so the pump tries to pump to a dead end which is bad for the pump and boiler. A bypas valve will open when system pressure increase ie when all the radiator valves are closed, to allow the water to flow still. The above system has a flow and return pipe running around the house, a bypass valve should be fitted joining the end of these 2 pipes together to allow flow if all the radiator valves are closed.

I personally think having a radiator without a thermostatic valve is a stupid idea. They normally choose to do it to the bathroom radiator so the bathroom is mad hot all day long.

The lads that came in and did mine were absolutely fantastic. OK you do get a mess from the drilling and the dust especially as they have drilled through walls with mine being a flat, but they clean up as best they can. The electrcians come around the day after so everything is up in the air again. The 3rd day they come around and flush out your system with some sort of protector liquid. Just waiting for the joiners now to box in some of the pipes.

I am however gobsmacked though at the amount British Gas has gone up. Gone through approx £17 in Gas since last Wednesday night. :( . Have got my central heating on now just for 1 hour, taken note of how much credit i have on the meter and will check again when that 1 hour is up, hopefully this will tell me how much i need to put on for the week and just how much "warmth" i can afford.

Cool:D cant wait to have a warm house for a change but yeh the cost of running it worries me a little, im putting close to £10 a week already just to use the one fire & cooker per week & still end up on emergency. Looking forwad to constant hot water & might actually save me a fortune in leccy, so probably balance it out as im currently on the owd econ 7 & owd blowers that dont work cept 1. In my old house the central heating was really economical £10 per week & never on emergency plus the hosue was always warm in fact too warm sometimes, i would of thought they would put an economical boiler in being a new one:confused:

Re: We Have Heating ....

Right did the 1 hour check, the meter showed up at only taking off 20p for that hour but bearing in mind i didnt run any hot water, Tomorrow i will do the 1 hour check again, this time running off some hot water....say, half a bath to see what that will cost.
My other house going back 2 years ago had central heating and that used approx £10 a week but now we have had a 40% increase in the price of gas that means another £4 + extra.
I reckon its going to take about £15-£18 a week on the meter. :( + £20 a week on my electric :( .....

Also ive noticed my meter is still clocking down my credits when nothing is being used on the gas :( .... rip off turds ! :)

 the fun & games i've got to yet contend with - the price of warmth hehehehehe. Yeh thats the downside of pre payment meters will still clock up a small amount even tho not using any, tho u will be keeping a pilot light alight.

The Cruden guys are all really nice....Honest. Couldnt fault any of them. They actually come into your home and respect you and your property, not like the councils lads who im sure have competitions as to how much damage they can cause.
Just had Crudens plasterer around today, he not only filled in any work left from the heating being put in, he also rectified some of HBC shoddy workman ship for me, which he didnt need too. :D

Re: We Have Heating ....

Heh, we don't(except for the main fire and a couple of oil filled rads), we are decorating at the min and as I was walking past teh downstairs bathroom at 8:45 I heard running water. But none of us had been in the bathroom so I went to investigate further only to find teh flexible pipe to the hot tap has split wide open and boiling water is squirting everywhere. So its a sudden try and remember which tap on teh pipes under the boiler turns teh water supply off. so no heating or hot water till tomorrow :(

Ah well, at least it didn't happen when we had gone to bed or it would have been going all night!

I do find it laughable that they had to call the boiler manufacturers out to sort out the problem. Can plumbers only fix leaks these days?

Ring HBC and ask them for an approx date, what happened with us we got a 4 week warning letter, then a 2 week one, but in small writing was a telephone number to ring up. Ring that number and they then book you in and give you a date they will come around and start.

Well welcome accymel to choas hehehehe blower heaters are being taken out tommorow, then thursday its the central heating installers:D

Downside was & is shifting my stuff about out of the way, still a bit to do as mainly for tommoz is just making plenty of room for them to take the heaters out, then its make massive way for the radiators, just godknows where to put my babies my fishes tank so they are safe from the disruption & near plug to keep filter going, ahhhhh choas chaos chaos LOL!

Gee feels like im moving house LOL

I presume thats the standard blow heaters in Council House?

God I remember when I liven in One, FREEZING isnt the word, used to have it on full blast and sit right infront of it.

Did nothing to warm the house up unless it was on all the time.

Ah suppose but honestly they dont work anyways no point putting them on so technically no heating up there anyways.

It is absolutely freezing & im hugging me fire nearly, but need to cool this heater before they come so least can get them all taken out all at once especially as thats where the radiator is going tommoz:rolleyes:

If its not cool im sure the workman will just take it anyways. Radiators, better than them stupid blow heaters.

But a fire is Instant warm, I suppose you dont reallise how warm they are untill you havent got one.:(

I find my biggest problem is you heat the house up, someone opens the front door and whoosh its all gone.

Hehehehehehe i so hope so its not hot yeh usually when door is left open heating disappears but this bloody one blower in hall is proving to be stubborn about it, its not getting colder despite the door being right near it blowing the cold air in:eek: :D

If it's not cold when school finishes put your daughter in a bad mood and then get her to stare at it. That will freeze it :D :D

It sounds to me like you mean the gas fired hot air heating, and yes it is rubbish.
I think Mel has electric storage heaters - they heat up bricks inside them over night and allow the heat out slowly through vents during t he day - also a rubbish idea, unless you are psychic and know today how cold it will be tomorrow.
Have you turned the heat up to full Mel so it opens the vents inside and lets the heat out?

Bless them they are gentlemen even took their boots off at the doorstep before entering house until leaving - very nice men:D

Yes thats them absolute waste of space. just blow hot air out of 3 vents, to heat a full house.

Anyone have any idea how much it costs to have central heating installed? It would be for an average 2 bed terrace.

Please try not to get paint all over the radiators, like you did with the storage heaters, when you next decorate. :D

If your'e thinking of having a bath in the morning better start running it now. The one disadvantage to instant hot water lol.
