The story's gone now. Is that the geezer that didn't know Accy is in Lancashire?
Shocking ain't it.

Edit: The link isn't gone, it's just incomplete :)

The magistrates accepted that he didn't know Accy is in Lancashire. They must be very gullible for believing that excuse.

I work in Warrington. A woman I used to work with once asked me, when I said my mother lived in Blackburn, if that was in Yorkshire. It's only 40 miles away for gawd's sake.

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?

I believe its down to bad teaching. I work with a guy who does a lot of hill walking and he was suprised I could read a map evn to an 8 point grid referance as well as understand the markings and symbols on it. Something I am happy to know as sat nav need batteries. :D

WillowTheWhisp 16-11-2006 22:34

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?

I can also read a map and it annoys me when people say women can't read maps. I know what all the little symbols mean too. I'm not daft enough to think I can drive up a river like a friend of ours was going to do until he realised it was a river! :D

To answer the question 'do they still teach geography in schools?'

Sort of. In Primary schools they teach it on a rota basis, every other term, alternating with History. And they dont learn about maps anymore, they do a short spell of it for a few weeks, and then its all about what the world looks like these days and hows its changing. A survey was done with high school kids and they didn't know where Ireland was or even where the cities where in the uk!!

They are all going to get lost as soon as they leave home.:D

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?

You've got to admit that if you say Hyndburn to someone outside of the area they don't know where it is.

I bet most of us, when asked, will say Accy/Ossy/Harwood/Clayton etc.

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?

it's got to be declining standards in education and not only in the UK , I was once asked by one of my ironworker apprentices how long it took me to drive home to England to see my Dad , ........I live in California and my Dad lived in Gt. Harwood ............... The same youngster also had problems with an analog clock face (dial) could only use digital,(thank God none of the clocks in California have roman numerals)

I'm fantastic at reading maps and directions, have no idea where i get it from. My mum says I must have a Sat Nav built in my head. Have never got lost once.

This lad was obviously in breach of his bail just coming back to Accrington (if this is where he was arrested) why did the bench accept this quite stupid excuse!!

Lolly 16-11-2006 22:57

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?

Just read the story again, he wasnt originally arrested in Accy, my mistake!! Duh!! Good at maps obviously nowt else. LOL.

WillowTheWhisp 16-11-2006 22:59

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?

Well he'll be OK in Accy now because he only has to keep out of Chorley. Unless he thinks Accy is a suburb of Chorley.

Lolly 16-11-2006 23:06

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?

LOL. The probation officer should give him a map. (and give him/herself one to!!)

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?

Kids will only learn whilst at school if they are interested in the subject and have a desire to learn, otherwise they will switch off and let their minds wander.

In this instance, the scrote in question, probably had a brief, or duty solicitor, who knew how to play on the guillability of the Magistrates Bench. I seriously doubt the plausability of his excuse.

Whoever gave 'Accy' that stupid name needs shooting, as children we called the river Hyndburn 'the river stink', it just confuses people general election time is a prime example 'where the heck is Hyndburn'?
