Where Would Your Money Go?

I've just been watching a tv programme on channel 4. I'll try to explain. A successful multi millionaire wanted to give a little bit of something back to society in the form of money. He wanted to choose where he thought the money would be most beneficial, so he went under-cover as a youth worker in one of Londons most deprived areas, Hackney.

To cut a long story short, after his own research he donated £20,000 to the only youth club in the area and was in dire need of financial help. The tears from the group leader was enough to show how much this money was needed.

He donated £10,000 to a young and up-coming fashion designer, who, under normal circumstances be able to raise so much money to start, what could be a very good business.

He gave another £10,000 to an ex-boxer that contributed so much to his area, he really was the life of that community.

If money was no object, besides the very deserving accyweb, who would you give/donate a large amount of cash to help?

I watched it too.:)

I thought it was going to be patronising. The rich benefactor doling out money to the poor and needy. I think the young guy Ben probably got as much out of it as the people that he gave the money to. It was also good that he's continuing his involvement with the youth club, and helping them by using his considerable skills.

Who would I give money to if I had a windfall? Hard one.

Probably to some of the 12 million children who have been orphaned by AIDS in Africa.

It in my case it can only be medical research, yes I know it's 'boring,' great strides are made daily in all forms of research, once fatal diseases are now treated on an 'out patient' basis, extending life without the need of painfull surgery is another example, I could go on and on.

I thought exactly the same thing. Funny how we have pre-conceived ideas when it comes to wealthy peoples motives when they are trying to help out.

I think I would give a fair bit of financial backing to the air ambulance.

I watched this as well tinks really deserving causes I thought and the fact that this young lad is staying intouch with this community and also contributing and being involved with the fashion designer gets my vote , heartwarming .

Myself ,umm withouthout doubt it would have to be cancer research and PDSA .

I ment to watch this, i'll have to download it. :p

Im not sure I could ever donate a sum of cash like that, I'd have to be positive that its going to be spent wisely to help somebody get out of poverty..

The programme wasn't about poverty, it was about about giving people an oppurtunity to achieve goals that they wouldn't have had the chance to otherwise because of finincial difficulty.

Re: Where Would Your Money Go?

Yeah you know what I mean. :p

Helping someone who couldn't normally have the chance because of financial difficulty is helping people out of poverty in my eyes.. although perhaps thats somewhat misleading on my part as someone dosnt need to be 'poor' to have difficulties.. hmm! :)

edit: Is it a series or just a one off? I really did mean to watch this.. I blame you all for not posting prior to the tv show airing :D

Now that is what I call a challenge, hard not to be selfish, higher education for all not just those who's parents can easilly pay for.

Re: Where Would Your Money Go?

I would make a substantial donation to the Terrance Higgins Trust who do excellent work both for and with people with HIV and AIDS in this country. The numbers of affected people are forever increasing, especially amongst young women. They have an excellent website www.tht.org.uk and they actively campaign for things like better sex education in schools etc.

They have many campaigns running at the moment which are accessible through their website. Tomorrow is World AIDS Day, lend them some support. One of these days it could affect you, your family or someone you love.:D

I don't know where mine would go if I had any but I'd like to be hands-on too to be sure that it was well used and acheived it's aim.

Re: Where Would Your Money Go?

I would spread it out amongst some of the smaller not so well funded charities in the local area (ok Accy n Grangemouth) as they need it more than some of the bigger ones who I believe spend too much on admin etc.

Re: Where Would Your Money Go?

i was going to origionaly say i would donate it to the baby ward at queens park hospital but after my friend bought them an incubator some nasty tory polotician had the plaque ripped off it saying who donated it and took it to a hospital down london in her own area

therefore i would donate money to something polotitians cant steal from like places that provide holidays for children with cancer and other nasty diseases

nope its absolutely true but i cant remeber her name , she had the job in the cabinet that dealt with teh nhs

not big on polotics but when my mate and his kids mum asked where the incubator was he was told it had been moved down to london on orders and was handed back teh palque and screws that were used to fasten the plaque

his son was born very premature and he and his partner at the time raised a lot of money and bought queens park an incubator which was desperatly needed back then in the very ill baby ward

my mates lad is about 13 or so now so who ever was in charge then robbed queenspark

How on earth can they get away with it. Private money paid for it not public so it should never been allowed to happen. When we fund for something out of our own pockets some stuck up arrogent dipstick of a politition should not be allowed to do such an action. The community pays so it should stay to benifit the community.

Appologies for thinking it was of your "specials" :o

That's absolutely disgusting. It should never have been allowed to happen. Handing back the plaque just adds insut to injury too.
