It's a laugh, innit?

I rather like Rishton. Even though it is not, perhaps, the most attractive place in the world to live at least it's people are, for the most part, friendly enough (if you discount the psycopathic alcoholic lesbians, of which there appears to be a disturbingly inordinate number for such a small place).

The mother of a close friend once, famously, described the village as "an open mental institution". I smiled politely at the remark, as one does, and let it pass. Now I am coming to the conclusion that my colleagues mother may have been, sadly, more perceptive than I originally gave her credit for.

I could bore you all to death with the instances of communal and individual insanity I have witnessed over the past year and a bit, but, one incident stands out in memory which, I think, gives some indication of the of the truly bizarre nature of this little community.

During the latter part of September I was passing by the Co-Op on the High Street. I should explain that, for lack of anything more profitable to do with their free time, this is where most of the youth of the village tend to congregate. By the side of the shop is a two foot high brick wall which separates the Health Centre from the pavement. There, on a small child's tricycle, was a largish fourteen year old youth, who, to the delight of his peers and younger children, repeatedly pedalled the tricycle at speed into the brick wall. The ensuing collision resulted in his being catapulted over the wall to collide with the corner of the Health centre building.

I recall being amazed at the persistance of his behaviour, which continued until the tricylce disintegrated beneath him and he was left staggering around on the pavement.

What shocks me more than anything about this incident is that there were, presumably, responsible adults passing by on the pavement and going in and out of the Co-Op...and not one of them seemed to think that any of this was either unusual or aberrant enough to require either comment or intervention. I, on the other hand, approached the staggering youth and asked him why he was so intent on causing himself serious injury. The reply, when he managed to focus his eyes sufficiently to make out who was talking to him, was "It's a laugh, innit?"

It is just a pity the tricycle did not have a 1,000cc engine fitted, then it could do a 'right' job on this brainless individual.

You're lucky that's all he said. Most adults were probably loth to comment upon his insane actions for fear of receiving a torrent of verbal abuse - or worse.

Willows right no-one can be sure what will happen when you pull up kids at this kind of jape. Me if they are daft enough to do something so daft then let them learn by their mistakes (if they are lucky) and not try it again. Then again if their mates earache them enough they would do it again.

whilst not being surprised at the behaviour, must admit AB i am surprised at the reply especially in rishton, as others say a torrent of abuse is normal from such people, maybe they are happily mental over there.;)

A small report in this week's Observer concerning Rishton caught my eye;a woman's purse was "stolen" from the British Legion Club; a Prada purse worth £200 apparently. It had a fiver in it. Odd that I think....

Going back on thread .. I think that there has always been lads as described by A-B, nowt new. I have always noticed that some lads are just born what I would describe as 'daft' .. no sense of danger, hyper-active and out to get attention in anyway they can.
