During my army days I stayed in a 'hotel' in Colchester for 28 days, no pillows no matress either. seriously I think hotel quality means hard wearing.

Ok ... gonna' bore you stiff on this one, seeing I am probably involved in selling the majority of pillows and hotel linens for the whole of the UK.

The majority buy a hollowfibre 18 oz pillow, a good standard, not too expensive pilllow but reasonable .. a little higher spec. than what you would find in most retail shops. This is probably what the retailer was trying to say. Then there is the 25% who buy the Dacron filled one, a filling manufactured by Du Pont and is lovely and soft and washes well, although two and a half times the price. Very few buy the feathered ones, for fear of allergies, although bought mostly in Scotland Spuggie, as they have more traditional values.

Approximately 75% of hotels do not own their own linen, they are on what is known as linen hire and have a contract with a laundry for providing and washing their sheets, table linen, etc. There is definitely a move to better quality in both sheets and towels, after all, this is what the guests first perceive in their stay, and you are going to find much finer percales on your hotel beds. Percale is when the yarn is finer, but more threads to the inch so gives a much more luxurious feel to the sheet, what you think of as Egyptian cotton I suppose.

I've stayed in 100's of hotels in the UK and B & B's and only been disappointed a couple of times by the quality of their linen and pilllows >> let me know which ones you didn't like and I will contact them. Ok zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I will investigate this retailer you mentioned and see if they are telling the truth ...:D

I was thinking along the lines of 'hotel quality' meaninig they were more hardwearing but why would they need to be? I can understand hotel carpet needing to be hardwearing in the foyer/lobby/corridors with lots more people walking over them but if you think about it with pillows it's only going to be one head per night just the same as anywhere else so only gets the same wear as your pllows at home. So why would they need to be any different?

If the pillows were in the Victorian Arcade it probably means they are 'quality seconds', which'll probably mean they are filled with seasonal turkey feathers rather than duck down.:D

How long since Willow ? They have changed their buying policy recently in the UK and abroad .. and buy separately for different areas. Were they long and narrow or the new idea of square continental ones ... :D

Difficult though 'aint it? Everybody has different ideas about pillows. i.e I can only sleep with just the one flat pillow and feel rather sickly if higher. Whereas some people love to have 2 or more and feel no discomfort in the morning although their head has been on a tilt all night.

That's why hotels do try hard to accommodate all tastes by providing more than one pillow. Remember, if you not comfortable .. contact the Housekeeper , they will only be too pleased to help .. do not be uncomfortable in silence.

As with the sheets, as I have explained on percales, doesn't last any longer than one you would think of as a Hospital Sheet ...

("eee luv, what a cracking bit of cloth" does actually crack if you grip between yer hands and pull quick .. just thicker yarn)..

percales just soooooooooo lovely to sleep in with that softnest, believe me.

But why should a pillow for a hotel be thought of as better/bouncier/longer lasting? They surely only get the same treatment as a home pillow, ie a head on them at night.

Wasn't worth complaining to the Hilton at M/C airport - we were only there one night pre-flight.

Actually spuggie I was looking for a wife substitute,she loves garlic and suffers from verbal diarrhoea after a drink but I wouldn't swop her.:D
