How Did We Manage Without It.
Just how did we manage without our mobile phones, of all the new gadgets to be invented it surely must rank as the most essential. Whilst in hospital the other week at Blackpool visitors were thin on the ground, so 'texting' was the only way to keep in touch. Contrary to what people would have you think ,you can use them in hospital, after all Blackpool Victoria is a heart /lung specialist unit, everyone had them you just didn't overdo it. I would not dream of leaving home without mine.

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
Sorry , but I equate the cell phone to being the modern day equivalent of one of the Biblical plagues of Egypt .
Empirical proof is watching anyone in charge of either a motor vehicle or shopping trolley/cart and using a cell phone at the same time , an impossible task. 20/30 years from now when everyone is walking around with golf ball size cancerous tumours and suppurating pus oozing sores on their heads and asking why me ...........it's because you were daft enough to subject yourself to the same doses of radiation emitted by a microwave oven . ok enough of my rant ..........:D :D :D :D :D |
Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
have one dont like em,but would say essential for such cases as women driving alone, etc, also essential for when we go shopping, paris goes in the shops,i wander round and have a fag or 3 depending how long she is.to me theirs plusses as well as negatives with these infernal contraptions.:)

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
I'd hate to be without one for arranging meetings with people who aren't at home.
You could probably say the same for land lines a couple of generations ago. I remember when we got our first phone, a party line, I thought it was wonderful. I'm one of those people who can't send text messages whilst walking let alone pushing a shopping trolley. :D |
Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
Considering there convenience they are invaluable. If running late you can let the other half know you are on the way with the shopping. ;) This will cost a couple of pence as opposed to the 40p starter in a public box (if one can be found). :D If it wasnt for the advances of technology we wouldnt be sitting in a wide area at our computers having this discussion.

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
The thing is mobiles are no longer just phones. I find them invaluable as I'm often stuck in traffic on the way home. I do shopping for teh old dear next door and I can ring up when I'm there to find out what she needs(I might not have set out to go shopping so wouldn't have been able to ask beforehand)
But as well as a phone, mines a) a radio b) Sat nav c) MP3 player (and video if I can be bothered to recode films) oh and the speaker is fine for background music e.g. on hols I have Siobhans bedtime music on it and play it for her to goto sleep and then we listen to music on th balcony d) 3Megapixel digital camera e) Internet machine (it has a decent full screen browser and 3G fast connection) f) games machine ( I have ~30 games on it plus Mame(Arcade emulator)) g) bluetooth webcam for use with my laptop h) full organiser g) Office document reader(Word, Excel, Powerpoint) h) a usb/bluetooth 'memory stick' i) low res but useable video camera I can even use it as a remote control..... so not just a phone anymore, |
Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
Mobile phones I hate 'em, and yes I do have one, mainly if I'm out driving and need help.
Never mind I-D cards, they mean you can always be got, tracked or contacted. Mines off most of the time.:) |
Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
Convenient yes but they are also a right pain in the ar*e!! Went out yesterday to the pictures and McDonalds, supposed to be a family outing and the girls mobiles never stopped. I was not a happy mummy

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
I didnt have a mobile phone until i managed to pass my driving test and bought a car, then my sister bought me one for my birthday (it was about 3 weeks later). Wouldnt be without it now. It was handy for when mum was here and the alarm people would ring my mobile. Very handy at 3am talking to 999 and trying to get mum calm and breathing properly again and ringing sisters & bro to come down. When i crashed the car i completely forgot all about the phone tho and started walking home. Everyone knows though if you want me to answer the phone ring my mobile!

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
Mobile phones are a curse, I tell you, a curse. Why is it that Mrs H rings me just as I'm sat at the bar, about to lift the fifth pint of foaming ale to my lips, or alternatively, as I'm stood in a record shop, ready to part with a wad of cash for some rare 1950's record, and says "What are you doing now?" in a highly suspicious tone of voice, almost as if she can SEE down the bloody thing!

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
Mobile phones are worse than wearing one of those tags yobs have to wear if they are let out of prison early.
Bin 'em. |

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
I wouldn't want to be without my cell phone - although I don't use it a great deal. Never touch the thing when I'm driving, in a store or restaurant. When I am traveling, it's nice to be able to exchange text messages with my kin in England.
Hope you are doing well, Ian. Likewise your better half, granny. My cousin, (also an Ian), had a valve replacement at Blackpool a couple of years ago. Gave the hospital a good review. |

You need the cell number plus the carrier's address, (example, @vmobl.com). Otherwise, I just text directly to an e-mail address. Costs 5 cents per message. |

Is very handy though bullseyebarb when you are a long way from home and just wish to text that all is OK. I don't often dial on my mobile, just text to my kids (in between land phone calls) to ask everything OK, and they reply "Yes, fine" .. gives me peace of mind for the rest of the week. |
Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
Hope your hubby will be home and well soon Granny. Not fun being in hosp this time of year.

And how! A headset or phone to ear at all times, it seems to me. |
Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
I still manage without a mobile phone. I suppose in certain circumstances a mobile phone would be extremely useful but surely those are few and far between. In any case a mobile phone is of little use if you are unconscious. How many real emergencies does a person have in a day – a week – a month or a year?
Apart from the emergency aspect all a mobile phone does is make the telecom companies rich. I wonder how many people would still be alive to day or not been injured by careless drivers if mobile phones had not been invented. I have never had a video recorder either. I’ve always taken the view if I have to miss a programme because I am watching something else or not being around a TV then too bad. That’s life! Is a TV programme THAT important? I don’t think so! |
Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
I love my mobile phone and wouldn't be without it.

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
Well, Jambutty, I have read many a story in the paper where a mobile has saved a life, whether someone stuck on a mountain or out on the sea and yes, sure has been one or two accidents in cars where people have been distracted, that's why, there is the new law on this. Distractions in a car happen all the time, however, from drivers changing CD's or radio programmes. drinking cans of coke, putting on lipstick to that fag droppin' out of your hand. So not all about the phone.

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
When someone isn't home at the time they are usually home a reassuring call to explain why saves a lot of worry.
I remember missing a bus and my mother being worried sick that something may have happened to me before I finally turned up an hour later. Mimi misses a bus and phones to let me know that she'll be late because she's catching the next one and I am saved the worry. |
Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
I dont use mine that much but wouldn't be without it, feel much safer, hate seeing people using them when driving though, so much for the ban, see more people now than ever before!
|
Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
There is no excuse for anyone using a mobile phone in a car, even hands free phones are a dangerous distraction. In my opinon any in car entertainment can be a contributing factor to accidents on these heavily congested roads,'sat navs' are another distraction, if one is embarking on a strange journey it only takes a little previous planning before hand. If its a must to use the mobile phone pull over when safe to do so.

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.
In car entertainment is that the teens with big sub woofers in the boot of the car to give them a beat to drive to?
