Catholic Church not all bad

A jump from another thread , where the Catholic Church has come under some criticism for its stance on adoptions by Gay parents
Came accross this story where a Catholic Hospice as gone out of its way to help a young disabled lad pop his cherry.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.../nvirgin27.xml

though I wonder what the reaction would have been if he had been gay

It doesn't mention the Catholic Church in your article steeljack. A little research reveals that the Sister Frances mentioned is, in fact, a single mother and member of an Anglican order of nuns.

oops sorry , saw the words Nun and Sister and mistakenley assumed she was Catholic , (a proper Bride of Christ ), not some pale anglo-saxon version, guess the light bulb should have clicked on when I read her name, with her not being called Sister Mary ..............
no offense intended to the Church :o :o :o

note to mods ....we need a smily to repesent remorse/apology ,the flagellating banana doesn't really cover it :( :(

note to self .........lay off the Bushmills before posting

It doesn't actually say that she helped him either, more like she didn't stand in his way and try to stop him. She didn't actively discourage him but neither did she actively encourage him. Although she does say that she is there to offer him emotional support she didn't exactly go out and pay for a prostitute for him.

He said he did not discuss his decision directly with Sister Frances, who founded the two hospices. "But I know she gave me her support."
I can see similarities here with the Catholic adoption agencies attitude towards gay couples adopting. They don't actively discourage it, neither do they actively encourage it. They do support the gay couples in that they direct them towards an organisation which will help them to adopt in much the way that Sister Francis offers this young man emotional support and who can say whether she may not have pointed him in the dirction of the magazines with the ads just as the Catholic agencies point people towards the other adoption agencies? So although she isn't Catholic and although this was supposed (I presume) to be showing a contrast in attitudes I personally find them very similar.

I also find it rather sad that the young man in the article has not found a loving relationship. I know of someone similar who has, and is now married and the proud father of two lovely, lively, boisterous children.

It would have been a lot less messing about if the nun had given him one instead.

I agree with you it can be a bit padantic.

Wait until its school choosing time. when the faith of your child can help or reduce the chance of them getting into your choosen school.

If you're not catholic then why do you want to get your son christened?
(point of reference - christening is when the parent offers their child to god, baptism is when a person offers themselves i.e. an older person who has never been christened). Catholic priests tend to believe that if you're not a catholic yourself then the only reason you're doing it is to get your child into a catholic school and not because you want to dedicate them to god.

I hadn't seen this thread, it has just been linked from another.

After our conversation about this shaz I was thinking ...... have you approached the Fathers of the church's that your family are known to? I know I used the term 'shop around' but some Priests have moved forward more than others. Ian's dad is a practicing catholic and attends St Marys every Sunday etc. but Father Bourke wouldn't baptise ours because Ian isn't a practicing catholic but Father Walsh from Sacred Heart would.

Have you considered catholicism yourself or is that just a no go?

If it means that much to you that you want Reece brought up catholic don't give up after an altercation with just one Priest there is many more out there that would be glad to baptise him.

I wonder if the church would have also help him if he was gay, and wanted to have sex with a man?

Or bisexual, and wanted a man and a woman at the same time!:D

I don't think that would work, she doesn't look like she believes in fairy tales any more.
