TV in pubs?

Ok I'm no prude but last night i was in the pub and like usual the tv was on. There was 4 women in the pub and roundabout 15 men. We were playing pool and we were watching tv while barracking the players. Anyway watched the programme about the child with no eyes - well what we could see. TV was still on didnt take much notice after that because i was playing. After we were all laughing and joking and if you want to know what was on channel 5 last night at 11pm look in your paper yesterday or sundays magazine. Anyway that set off some of the younger men- mind you it did come down to you need to watch this then you might learn something kind of thing being shouted around. But should this kind of thing be on tv in a pub. I know it was 11pm but what if someone who was in there was embarrassed about that and because of the amount of stick that was coming out about that - that they couldnt approach the landlord or landlady to turn it over? By the way it wasnt me or the other lady who was with me embarrassed - we were shouting and carrying on and giving some stick to the fellas.

Me and Ginger watched a bit of that Jen. It wasn't Bad you prude........ it was more like a documentary about all the dodgy names they can make up for porn like ...... Sex trex......Cumin to america, it wasn't full on in your face porn. Atually it was rather boring and I turned over after about 20 minutes.

Re: TV in pubs?

I suppose there's the possibility that it could have had the effect of some people leaving the pub if they felt uncomfortable with watching it, in which case it might not have been in the landlord/lady's best interest to have it on.

On the other hand - if anyone was embarrassed by it they may not have thought of approaching the bar staff because they may well have been told if they didn't like it they could always go elsewhere.

I said im not a prude. You should have watched it further on. As was mentioned to 1 of the blokes are you watching this you might learn something! Two people actually did leave - which is strange cos normally theyre there till chucking out time cos i walk home with one of em.

What i meant with all of this was should it have been on the tv in a pub?

At home anyone who doesn't like it can switch it off but in a pub they can't so either stay and be embarrassed or leave and go elsewhere.

OK Willow.so what are we getting into?.. leave and if you feel embarrrassed? then that really is your decision.. stay and be embarrassed..

WillowTheWhisp 30-01-2007 23:15

Re: TV in pubs?

Well the two options are stay or go, and as shillelagh said it looks like some people may have chosen to go. I'd probably do the same if I didn't feel comfortable with something.

In fact on holiday I did just that because we were in the family cabaret bar and there was a blue comedian. I wasn't comfortable with the jokes being told and neither were several other families who left independantly.

The upshot of that was that they don't plan to hire him again because they lost custom that evening.

One good thing about it, you do not have the worry of political affiliations, to vote with your feet.

be great if I could watch chan 5 : every time I settle down to watch the afternoon movie it goes bang crash stick and then freezes and won't work: I hate digital TV: I wonder if sky does the same:

Our sky has been a bit pixelated lately and freezes now and gain. I put it down to weather conditions.

Re: TV in pubs?

If there is one thing that makes me laugh and turn the channel over its these pretend porn films that they show on UK TV.
If you want some decent TV ;) then you should should be watching Spanish satellite at the moment.

I could post some screen grabs but they might be removed from the 18's section :D

It only happens with Sky (and I only have freeview Sky) I can't afford to subscribe anymore, if the weather is realy bad heavy rainfalls etc and then it only affects some, usually the good programs, it must be something to do with the volume of viewers at the time watching the channel.

I don’t suppose that it would have anything to do with ‘encouraging’ people to buy the new High Definition TV’s would it? Nah! Sky and even the BBC wouldn’t go to those lengths would they? Hmmmmm!

However all channels have a spell of the picture being pixelated somewhere on the screen.

Makes me think!

Well I just got a new TV with built in digital: also a new DVD and Vid: try thought I may I can not set up the Vid ( anyone know if there is anyone that can do this) I need aged 3 year old distructions....

This sort of thing does happen. If we've had some sort of sporting event on and forgot to turn it over at the end, you do sometimes get some odd things on. Although I usually remember because I like listening to music whilst i'm working. I'm sure if you'd have gone to the bar and asked them to turn it over then they would. I get asked all the time to turn a certain sporting event on or a certain music channel on, I always oblige.

Most new vids are plug and play, the seem to self adjust.

Did you get instruction? There should be some kind of Auto Tune Facility.

How are you connection it to you TV.

Back to topic.

I supposes its upto the landlord/lady what they put on the TV. As long as the have a licence to show whatever they are showing.

Re: TV in pubs?

My personal view is that they shouldn't be showing that kinda thing in a pub. All the pubs I went to while traveling in England had sporting events or news on. I like to be able to watch a match/game in glimpses while enjoying a good "natter." I believe most american bars show mostly this type of programming.

Of course it may have had something to do with my England travels ocurring during the July 5th - 12th (World Cup and bombing anniversary). So the pub programming fit quite well with my expectations and interests!

I really prefer pubs or restaurants where there are no televisions. I generally go to these places with friends or family, and I like to concentrate on good conversation. Therefore, at least for me, the TV is an annoying distraction.

B1TCH :D

If you have pixelated picture it is due to weak signal. You need dish realigning if on sat. If terrestrial through an aerial it too could be out of line or may need replacing with a new one.

grego 31-01-2007 20:28

Re: TV in pubs?

I'm surprised it was on in the pub, though I'm sure if asked, and no-one was watching it, the landlord would have turned it over.
