I.D.Thieft
I watched a program on BBC1 last night on ID Thieft and it has made me wonder if anyone on here have a shredder and use it on a regular basis.
We have 2 shredders one is a strip shredder the other is a crosscut but must admit we dont use them that much, but after watching the program and just how easy it was to loose your ID i will be using it more in the future:eek: Also what will they say when they try to empty the recycle paper and find it full of confetti:) |
Re: I.D.Thieft
I use mine regular, have done since I watched a similar program a couple of year ago
|
Re: I.D.Thieft
We shred everything except newspapers, and put it out with newspapers on re-cycle day so far no one has bothered, cannot see it should matter paper is paper shredded or not.
|
Re: I.D.Thieft
Use mine to shred everything other than newpapers, mags & flyers been doing it since i had a stark scare last year. Gawd after watching the real hustle it dont half make u paranoid but just how easily scheming crims are:rolleyes:
|
Re: I.D.Thieft
I think I read somewhere you are not to put shredded paper in the white sack: I work from home and for years now have used a shredder: I use some of my paper for packaging when I sell stuff on ebay: and also for pet bedding:
|
Re: I.D.Thieft
I have for nearly a year now & had no probs its still taken away, at the end of the day it is still paper & u would think it shredded that it would be easier for recycyling:rolleyes:
|
Re: I.D.Thieft
I shred everything with personal details on but I've also heard that you're not supposed to put shredded paper out for re-cycling... I don't really see why not, except that it may be messy getting it into the wagon.
I watched the programme last night. It is scary how easy it is to steal someone's details... I couldn't believe that people were chucking out paper with their full bank or credit card details on. |
Re: I.D.Thieft
see if they gave us proper recycling bins: one for paper , one for tins, one for glass and one for general rubbish: four bins they could empty one a week and life would be so much easier: but no we have play at dolly's houses with a little box for this and sack for that:
the words Party and brewery come to mind with any mention of HBC : oh and I am not sure if they took my christmas tree , but some one did: and I had made a bird feeder thing out of it , there it was in my front garden with a feast on for the birds: |
Re: I.D.Thieft
I was a victim of fraud about 4 years ago - it was a local petrol garage that has since closed. They swiped my card twice (without me noticing) then sold my details on. That person, or people, then proceeded to buy about £3 grands worth of stuff on my credit card - tv's, sofa, hi-fi's etc. Fortunately my card company called me to ask when I had last used it, it took a while but eventually it got sorted and didnt leave me out of pocket.
Same sorta thing happened to my fella too a while back, but his was his switch card so the money they were spending was coming straight out of his bank. He too got it back - eventually - but was worse as he was out of pocket for a while. We shread all our bills and everything now - give the shredding to my guinea pig. |
Re: I.D.Thieft

Re: I.D.Thieft
We shred everything with personal details on and we do put it in the paper sack but I've had a niggle at the back of my mind that I recall something being said that we're not supposed to. As I don't have a guinea pig and don't send many parcels what am I supposed to do with it? If I put it in the wheelie bin am I not committing the unforgiveable sin of committing to the landfil site something which is recyclable? Am I then at risk of being fined £1,000?

Re: I.D.Thieft
Nope! I don’t have a shredder. But I have bank statements, utility bills and the like that go back some 40 years. All my other paper rubbish is bagged and once in a while, when the sack is full I do a small detour to our local Refuse Disposal Centre during a normal foray into the outside world and dump the contents into the waste paper skip. If a crook wants to wade through that pile, which in all probability will be wet and soggy, then go for it crook. I hope you catch something nasty. Tetanus would be a good possibility.
A very interesting programme but what really caught my attention is the ease that a wi fi computer can be snooped on. It’s bad enough every crook and his dog trying to infiltrate my computer but at least I can block most if not all attempts. I take stringent precautions with my passwords, by not using real words and certainly only using one password once. All my passwords are made up of random alpha-numeric characters of at least 10 characters in length and for the really important ones like bank, E-Gold etc never less than 15 characters and more usually 20. A 20 random alpha-numeric character password would have approximately 20,089,617,866,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 different combinations. |
Re: I.D.Thieft
A few years ago I managed to lose some personal documents.. utility bills etc..a couple of weeks later I got a letter thanking me for opening a new online banking account with HSBC and could I log on to confirm my password and stuff !
the thing is... if anyone wants to steal my identity they are welcome to do so... I just hope they realise how much debt they are taking on ! :D |
Re: I.D.Thieft
When i had my most important letters nicked last year, worried about my income & bank, but when i rung the bank to assess the damage, seems that with me being on online banking as well as regular the ID they had & my a/c secure logins [that was net based but not with the important stuff] meant anyone trying to access my account would have to pass a stringent security check [to make sure its me] so thankfully saved the hassle of closing & re opening new account least my funds were safe!!
I now have security on some benefits too because they were at most risk at that time, which is passworded & sercurity coded now, as would seriously hate to imagine that in the wrong hands!! Luckily there are measures in place to limit the damage of ID theft, also there is insurance specifically for it now too. |
Re: I.D.Thieft
Another threat just as dangerous, is discussing your business round a pub/club bar, familiarity is the ally of the house thief, talking about what you posses, when you are going on holiday when your house is empty, if you live on your own they already know where you are. In these days of mobile phones etc they can even relay information about where you are whilst they burgle your property, remember "a closed mouth catches no flies".

there is an awarness advert on tv atm about just that, showing the valuables & the weaknesses of yr house/car, even about leaving a mobile about & flashing it around:rolleyes: |
Re: I.D.Thieft
My car/door keys are either in my pocket when I am dressed or under my pillow when I’m asleep. So any thief will have to get past me to get at them. Not difficult at my age I know but at least I will know if someone tries to steal them and I might be able to get the first blow in. Across the throat or jugular with the edge of an open hand would be a good place.
“But your honour - I just lashed out to try and protect myself. Surely I’m allowed to do that? I didn’t intend to crush his windpipe/jugular. Sorry!” |

Re: I.D.Thieft
Phishing phone calls seem to be on the increase these days not to mention the phishing knock on the door.
They know your name and phone number because more often than not it is in the ‘book’. Or you could get one that starts: “Mr Jones?” when your name is something else. Far too many people will answer no it’s …………and give their real name. If anyone rings me and asks for me by name or the name of someone else I NEVER answer the question but ALWAYS come back with, “Who is speaking?” all polite and innocent like. Then depending on who it is or how I feel at the time they get told to go away or …. Well you put your version in here. |

I don't have a shredder!!! BUT I burn everything on my open fire. Now even that's dodgy, because if Mary poppin's wanted to steal my I.D she would have very easy access. :D:D
Might have to re-think this way of throwing my I.D away. |
Re: I.D.Thieft
do you lot who burn stuff realise just how much carbon you are polluting our atmosphere with!!!

I shred everything that contains my name address and account details, and it all gos in the white sack, mine also shreds credit cards etc and cd,s:D

Re: I.D.Thieft
I only shred parts of any document that has my details on it......and I bought a very dinky little manual shredder for a quid......it is perfectly fine for the job......it takes ages to build up enough to send a parcel.....then it is someone else's rubbish to dispose of.
I frequently have phone calls asking for Mr Rashid, or Mr Iqbal...and when i say that no-one exists by that name at this address...they ask to speak to the person that the house belongs to....then they ask if we have a mortgage.......I always say YES....then they ask for the details and I ask for them to hold the line while I go and get them...then I put the phone on 'silent' and go and make a cup of tea....after a variable length of time I go and put the handset down. :) |
