another shop closing?

RETAIL firm Stationery Box, which has stores in Blackburn, Burnley and Accrington, has been placed into administration.
The future of the Accrington store is uncertain but administrators at bosses at DTE Leonard Curtis said they were hoping to sell the stores as a going concern, and save many of the jobs involved.

as stated in the telegraph!
that will be 3 shops next to each other all shut then?

Whats this town coming to, catch 22 though isn't it, if there are no good shops you don't attract the shoppers and if there are no shoppers you dont attract the decent shops. Read about the whipping shop, think its hilarious!

Yep, I said something similar somewhere else. It's a real shame though isn't it?

Warrington branch is also closing. All the stock is being sold off at half price.

It is a real shame Willow and the statement so very true, will have to stock up on things before they close, very reasonably priced in there.

Re: another shop closing?

It amazes me that the council can't see that there is a problem with the retail section of the town. Three shops in a row now closed or at least soon to be closed, yet we still have these rediculous little stall where the clock once proudly stood. I personally avoid that part of the Arndale, because i'm sick of being asked "would you like Sky sir? or, would you like to buy some of this usless cr#p sir?

I don't really remember the clock, but from what i've read (& seen) on here, it made people want to visit the Arndale, thus also spending money in the shops.

In all fairness, I don't think it's just a localised problem in Accrington - these shops are part of chains and it's the whole of the North West that's having problems.

Is Adams still open. There appears to be confusion as to the state of that company at that moment ?

They had a sign outside which read "Clothing down sale" thought it was just a bit of fun.
I know the shops that are closing are part of larger chains, but its the fact that they are then taken over by charity/pound shops which bothers me.

It might be one of the ones being saved;

More than 3,000 retail jobs have been saved after the childrenswear chain Adams was bought out of administration.
The deal involving retail entrepreneur John Shannon - formerly chairman of footwear firm Stead & Simpson and clothing chain Country Casuals - ensures that 273 stores around the UK will remain open.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), which was appointed as administrator on Thursday, said it had not been possible to save 42 branches, affecting around 400 jobs.

PwC partner Rob Hunt said: "If we had not been able to complete this transaction it is highly likely that significantly more store closures and redundancies would have occurred."

Operating from Nuneaton, Adams is the largest specialist retailer of children's clothing in the UK with an annual turnover of £200 million. It also has a number of overseas franchise outlets and retail customers, which PwC said would continue to be served following the deal.

Adams holding company, Myriad Childrenswear and its clothing subsidiary TU Childrenswear are not impacted by the deal and continue to operate as normal under the control of their directors.

PwC said the deal with Mr Shannon was completed immediately following its appointment as administrators to the company.

Mr Hunt added: "This sale will enable 273 stores to continue trading, safeguard some 3,200 jobs and ensure that Adams continues to have a place on the high street."

One media report said Mr Shannon paid less than £20 million for the shops.

It is the second retail rescue in as many days after Kwik Save said an investment company had agreed to take a majority stake in the business. A new chief executive and chairman will be appointed to steer the group.

I heard a rumour when down that one of the c0mputer/console games was shutting as well as the ones that are going or have already gone. How true it is I havent a scoobie but if it happens it is another nail in the towns retail outlets coffin.

Its getting to teh point where all that will be left will be Tesco/ASDA and the like.

isn't that 4 shops in the presitgous shopping centre of town now closed (Just how long is it since Cryers moved out, must be going on a few years now????) So someone tell me again why they built all the new shops where the market used to be???

Our shops seem to be closing down but the house prices seem to be exploding - it seems all wrong somehow, but are other towns the same?

Most of the shops discussed are national shops so it will be the same where those shops are based.

B&M bought the Glyn Webb chain. Dont know if the Accrington store will be one of those though. B&M are a bit like a Wilkinsons type shop. Mainly around the Blackpool areas.

So another cheapo shop that the town really doesn't need!

The new town name at this rate will be Tackyrington. The council was happy to take the cash for the old market but has nothing really to bring and keep new shops.

SHAME ON THEM!!!!!!!

Welcome to Tackyrington the town with the most cheapest of cheap shops available.

Not a nice thought is it.

It may be that these are the only shops in town that can afford the painfull overheads inflicted on them:rolleyes: What you have to realise is, are there enough customers to support these businesses that are shutting down, as for keep knocking the pound shops, I personally have found them great value for money, what difference does it make how little they charge, as there are some real bargains to be had, there are no prizes for being overcharged except an inflated vanity.

We at Music Zone were trading up on last year's figures and always busy;other stores in the chain with more competition weren't doing as well and the financiers panicked. Let's hope we are as well supported when we reopen!

america has the same problem where asda/wallmart has destroyed towns economies

why were the new shops built - probably a huge backhander got the go ahead for it because it was never needed from teh begining because all teh buisneses had already moved like dixons, currys, norweb , granada televisions , gas showrooms, tesco( although now back) and prbably a lot more i cant remeber right now

Re: another shop closing?

House prices are rising and people are moving into the area because it's a very central location to a lot of major towns with motorways to all of those towns. Plus, it's rural so a lot of people who don't need to depend on being in an urban location are moving in - i.e. we've got one of the highest number of web designers in the UK aside from London.

The only drawback of all this is that these people don't shop in town centres. They either shop where they work or they shop in out of town stores at the weekend or they shop on line.

But to bring people in you don't need the big stores. You need to be a specialist town i.e. the best place to get cheese, or the furniture capital or the arts centre. You get a reputation for something specific and some of the chain stores would return.

entwisi 06-02-2007 20:44

Re: another shop closing?

I can perfectly understand what you say Gayle

At my works they think I'm nuts for living here, yet I tell them the following

"30 mins from M/c centre, 45 mins from the sea, an hour from the Lakes, Ribble Valley on the doorstep, countryside within minutes, a choice of 5 good market towns within 30 mins and more out of town shopping centres than you can shake a stick at. Add to the mix house prices at least half what you pay in Cheshire and I can afford a better standard of living then my friends who are on 25% more than me"

The downsides? 60 mins each way to commute but tbh if I worked in B/burn and had to be in at 9 then it would probably take a good 30-40 mins

High council tax ( I pay more for Band C than mates at work in band E!!!) is not good though, have a word Gayle :D

Thats a bit sceptical. Besides charities do a good job mostley.

WillowTheWhisp 08-02-2007 17:43

Re: another shop closing?

Nothing against having a few charity shops and the pound shops can be handy for bargains that there's no sense in paying a lot more for.

The daft part is the building of more shops when there are already loads of empty ones - if we can't fill the one we've got why build more?

As Gayle said the ideal thing would be to have something that other towns don't have, or something better than other towns have so that people would want to come here. We have very little to attract people to come shopping here. AND there's so little on our market compared to Blackburn that people actually go there from here.
