I've seen the future...and it's canopied.

I returned to Glasgow this weekend. A place I lived for a while, a couple of years ago, but this was the first time I'd been back since the introduction of the smoking ban in public places.

As a smoker, I must say I wasn't particularly looking forward to standing out in the cold and wet, but I was pleasantly suprised.

The chi-chi boutique hotel suite, that was hired for my friends farewell bash, before they move to sunnier climes, had a balcony, so that was fine to indulge in a nicotine hit.

All the bars and clubs that I used to frequent, now have canopies, and heaters outside on the pavements. Some have tables, though you can't take your drinks out onto the street, unless there is a garden, so you tend not to stay out too long. However it is warm and dry whilst you have a cigarette.

Besides the trendy city centre bars, even the spit and sawdust pubs in the East End, that sell only pints of heavy and whisky, also seem to have adapted well, and have all provided dry areas outside to smoke.

The bars and clubs I revisted weren't as busy as I remember them, but even as a smoker the atmosphere inside was much more pleasant, because of the lack of smoke.

Another suprise of the changes was that at least three friends, who were life long, heavy smokers, have kicked the habit.

So in conclusion, something that I was dreading, isn't really going to be that bad.

As long as England also provides little shelters...to stop your fag being put out by the rain.

....oh, and another benefit was I only smoked half as many cigarettes as I normally would on a night out.:)

Yet anyone doing it the otherway thinks its heaven to spark up in the pub and double their intake.

The question must be, what is an enclosed public place? or whatever it is that the new law states.

Central Station in Glasgow is classed as a public space, and you can't smoke there, even though it is open to the elements, and the wind whistles through from all directions.

However, after sitting on the train for three hours, I lit up regardless. If challenged I was going to say I was a dumb tourist, who didn't understand the new rules.:D

Bit of a pain and besides ignorence wouldnt help as its announced on the trains. At least they had a canopy and heater where you partied G. We have only one pub in Grangemouth and it aint my local. There are a few equiped as discribed in Falkirk.

Neil it is any four sided enclosed area used by the public. They tried it with bus shelters but as most are open at two ends and gaps at the roof they couldnt. Down to whether the smoke can escape.

its like that in dublin when i went a couple of years ago patio heaters and canopies all outside. By the way i smoke and i liked it no smoking in the pubs.

Not on my train they didn't, and there were no signs visible. It was only after I'd had my cigarette, whilst waiting for my friends, that they told me the station was classed an enclosed place, and therefore came under the no smoking in confined public spaces.

But by then it was too late, though I did put the stump in a bin.:)

It sounds horrid. I'm planning to have my yearly visit to England in April this year so that I can avoid standing outside in the cold with my ciggie. Goodness knows what I'll do next year!

Honestly, I thought the same about Glasgow, especially in the rough dives on the outskirts, but they are still there, and seem to work.

As said earlier, I thought it was going to be dreadful, and that I'd never want to go out again, but it ain't that bad.

Just a note about all the moaning minnies, who say they never go out to pubs/bars/clubs because they are too smokey...suprise, suprise they still don't go out!:p

Re: I've seen the future...and it's canopied.

We have a ban in public places here. It started on the first of January, 2006. No smoking in government departments, banks, shops etc. BUT....bars are different. Small bars can choose to allow smoking or not as long as they display a sign to show their preference. Middle sized bars have to provide a smoking area and large bars have a smoking ban.

Parents of young children are shown the sign when they enter 'smoking' bars.

We were dreading it when it was enforced but it hasn't made much of a difference to us. The only place we go to where we can't smoke is the ten-pin bowling alley and they have provided a place outside where we can sit with our ciggies.

It seems to work.

The Railway in Accy is getting geared up for the ban.At the back there is a wooden decking area with heaters.Iheard of a canopy going up,serving hatch & plasma screen bieng installed too.Someone told me of a bar in B'burn wich was doing something along similar lines, but i forget which one.Anyway, the ban wont affect me that much when it comes in in summer,i prefer to drink in the beer garden if the suns out:)

The doormen marked your hand with a code, which was checked when you returned. It didn't seem too much hassle.

When the smoking ban comes in will you still be able to smoke in the beer garden or will you still have to go to the smoking area?

Well, seems you can by law maxwell, however, any landowner can specify what people do on their land, so up to the owners really. In other words, they could ask you not to smoke in their beer garden, even if in the open air, if they are that peevish.

I think it will be a bit of a shock to the system for many of the older drinkers. Some have sat in the same seat, in the same pub having a pint & a ciggie most of their lives.

We have an electric canopy at the Oaklea that can be retracted when its warm. We also have outside heaters.

:)

I keep changing my mind, on one hand I like to have a qucik ciggie whilst working if its quiet, but then on the other hand when I came to clean up last night, and people had put ice in ashtrays that had melted and made all the ash mush (if you don't want ice then say so. lol.) and people have put in chewing gum (just wrap it in a bit of paper!! lol.) that makes me feel like I cant wait for it to happen. Its disgusting, yes I think it is even though I smoke myself! We do have a fantastic beer garden, which is alright for customers, not so good for me if i'm working. :D

Hardly enclosed Neil, still plenty of fresh air blowing through there ... think 'shelters' have to have at least two open sides which this does have.

The Oaklea have made provision to let the sun shine through (hopefully in the Summer) by their electric roof. So will suit all customers .. very pleasant, hope to visit. :D

Reads a bit like a panic article. They are right about the cowboys though as they are going to make a few bob out of the short cut takers. It has to be seen as stated as an investment for the future of the business. It cant be seen as an expense not worth worrying about. Pubs that dont have them up here are loosing custom because of it and are not gaurenteed to regain the lost custom if they belatedley decide to fit them.

Once it settles down it will be ok as it is starting in the summer.

I think the June meet should definetly be on Saturday 30th of June.

It will be fun to see what happens at midnight, when the ban comes in.:D

I might be undercover that night as one of the 130,000 people being employed to catch smokers at it.;)

If only the government could find enough money to pay the wages of 130,000 home helps for the elderly instead, I'd feel a lot happier, and probably less inclined to smoke.:(

29.5 million is to be spent on wages of undercover spies, to make sure the ban is carried out in pubs.

At a time when care for the elderly is being cut back all the time, that amount of money is a disgraceful.

Hi, you lot,
We had the ban last year on June 1st. When midnight came everyone had to go out side. You can't smoke anywhere in Montreal, no pubs, restaurants, public places. So you see cig butts all over the streets. They have decided to put huge ash trays outside all the metro stations. I have to smoke outside at work, and when its 20 c below it gets pretty cold. I usually manage a quick couple of puffs then run back in.

The bars over here are trying to take it to court, its supposed to be a free country isn't it. There's some bars that have canopies outside and heaters which is not bad. But still some people complain out side on the terrace, so now they've split them up as "smoking" and "non smoking" sides, which I find ridiculous.
