Re: Ban on Photos in Public
the general aim of this 'possible' legislation is to stop teh papparazzi type from invading privacy.
I find it strange to think that taking pictures outside will be illegal when probably 75% of the population are walking round with camera phones taking pictures left right and central. Then you get situations like car accidents. One of the best things you can do is take photos to prove the positioning of cars. sounds like legislation that would be ignored as the Police would not be able to keep up with all the paperwork involved :D |
Re: Ban on Photos in Public
So does this mean that all the purveyors of CCTV will also be breaking the law.
This government is so far up it's own backside that it is in need of a Davey Lamp and a canary! |
Re: Ban on Photos in Public

I suppose the one saving grace is that we won't have to see pictures of smug MP's kissing babies all over the papers every general election :)

Re: Ban on Photos in Public
Absolutely ridiculous the politicians are just trying to control everything, it makes no sense at all and would be impossible to police.

Re: Ban on Photos in Public
Carrying on like this makes me wonder if its a demoratic dictatorship these power mad polititions want.

Re: Ban on Photos in Public
What an absolutely ridiculous idea. I tried the link but it was unavailable. I haven't actually seen the news story. Is this perhaps an exaggeration by the press or something which has been misquoted and taken out of context and then reported? I can't believe even our government can be so stupid as to try to make this law. Does this also go for photographing scenery?

Re: Ban on Photos in Public
How can you ban taking photo's in public? So if i go to London for the weekend then I cant take a photo of me standing in front of the tower of london or buckingham palace? That will kill of the tourist money wont it?

Re: Ban on Photos in Public
I've been looking into this in a little more detail and at present it appears that there are no actual proposals to make this law - just suggestions and ideas. It needs nipping in the bud before it gets any further.
THIS is a link to the current situation regarding photographer's rights in this country. |

Re: Ban on Photos in Public
So............if I manage to get back to Ossy in October, I won't be able to take a pic of my brother having a fag in the Stop!!
It gets worse. |
Re: Ban on Photos in Public
It's not law. It's not even a proposed law yet as far as I can gather - it's some suggestions for a proposed law, so you should be OK in October. It's not going to gain the government any extra revenue so I can't see it being fast tracked.
I was thinking about this - you know how they've got those 'no cameras' signs in some places like the Tower of London and Accy Arndale? If you do the tour of Lancaster Castle they tell you that you must not take photos inside the Shire Hall because it is till a working court (Can't quite see the logic of that one when there isn't actually a court in sesion.) but then you go into the gifte shoppe and there are postcards with pics of the Shire Hall - sort of defeats the logic doesn't it? |
Re: Ban on Photos in Public
Willow, did you read tha PDF that you posted the link to (I posted the same link some time ago in another thread btw! :D ) Basically when on Private property they can restrict you in any way they want. If that is to make you 'buy' an official piccy then so be it.
The other thing to be wary of is that the link relates to teh law as at August 2004. Some time ago in this day and age so i wouldn't take it as total gospel without checking if there are any new developments or laws or changes to existing legislation e.g. data protection act |
Re: Ban on Photos in Public
Unless a new law, which as far as I'm aware hasn't yet been formulated let alone proposed, is passed then no matter how old the existing law is, it still stands.
|
Re: Ban on Photos in Public
but the problem is there isn't one single law(which is why this proposal has probably surfaced in teh first instance), its a hotch potch of bits of this and bits of that all of which are being updated with new amendments here there and everywhere.

Re: Ban on Photos in Public
this country will be like judge dredd in a bit!!!
judge , jury and executioner!!!!!!!!! Judges are empowered to arrest, sentence and even execute criminals on the spot. wont be able to take a **** without permission either |
Re: Ban on Photos in Public
The thing is what we don't want happening is a blanket ban on photography in public places because that is a nonsense. It would mean all those lovely photos of lakes and mountains on holiday would be illegal.
There's already restrictions on taking photos in Trafalgar Square but nobody seems to know about it and tourists do it in their droves. I've done it too, and not all that long ago. I think I've got one somewhere of Emz on a lion. The court thing I can understand when there's a trial going on - similar to not taking photos in a church when there's a service going on but why you can't take them in the empty courtroom is beyond me. I can't see the logic behind the rules for the Arndale either. The reason they gave me was 'crime prevention' but you can photograph the front end of M&S from Broadway - how is that any different? |
Re: Ban on Photos in Public
Panther I hope this isnt a picture of the future. The law screws up enough as it is without that kind of justice. Imagine the outcome if you were innocent but had allready been "dealt with" and sentence carried out. I hope I am on my way to a better place before this happens.

Re: Ban on Photos in Public
I should have said you can't take photos in our church during the service - any kind of service - but you can set the scene up again afterwards and photograph that. Not sure what the general rules are for weddings and register signings but in our church they have to pose again afterwards and a wedding I photographed at the registry office they asked not to take photos during but to wait and set the scene up again afterwards.
Trafalgar Square is a funny one - I shall reread the references to that, but I have to go out now to catch a bus. |
