No Canvassers!

I had a terrible night last night, long story, I was up all night with daughter in agony with an injury to her ankle. I've spent the morning in A&E with her and was just trying to get 40 winks on the sofa when yet another door knocker came to the door. To say I was not best placed is an understatement.

Does anyone know were you get those No Canvasser signs for the door? They do seem to work keeping cold callers away to a point.

From a sports shop they are called baseball bats. Have a wood one or a coloured metal ones. After a few home runs the message will get round that they aint welcome. Make out they were trying to rob you. ;) :D

It was safestyle Mel, I swear he's lucky I didn't punch him in the gob .... and I'm not joking.

I swear cold calling should be illegal! If I want double glazing, or to change my energy supplier, or to change my religion I would approach the neccessary people.

It's just a bad sprain .... it must be sore though, she was up all night with it.

Re: No Canvassers!

soem areas in te uk are designated no cold caller zones and i think it is actualy a criminal offence for cold callers to go into them

why they dont make teh whole country a no cold calling area i dont know infact any type of cold calling shoudl be illigal period

if i want somthing i will look on the net or in teh yellow pages or classifieds even

if they made it illigal it would save a lot of vulnerable people/stupid getting ripped off which is a good enough reason on its own to make it illigal

Yeah there was a post on here (might even have been me that posted it) I noticed around Moorhead School is one of those areas. I wonder who you apply to and what the conditions are?

Just had a quick read Spug, that's more your legal standing if you buy something from a cold caller

Now how about this for a little war considering people wanting an extention to cold calling no tolerence zones.

Traders attack ban on cold calling

By Tom Harper, Sunday Telegraph
Last Updated: 1:07am GMT 11/02/2007

Charities and door-to-door sales companies fear that plans to extend a scheme -targeting cold callers will devastate their operations.
In two years, police, councils and community groups have established more than 1,000 "No Cold Calling Zones" (NCCZ), which ban businesses from randomly targeting potential customers at home.
The scheme has reduced "distraction thefts" where rogue traders and thieves -target the old and vulnerable on their doorsteps. Last year, more than 12,000 incidents of "distraction theft", such as thieves posing as meter readers or council officials, were reported. But police believe the true figure may be as high as 130,000.

Crime rates have plunged in areas with NCCZs. In one part of Luton, Bedfordshire, burglaries have dropped by 80 per cent. In Bedfordshire as a whole, "distraction theft" has dropped by more than a quarter and burglary is down 21 per cent. Similar patterns have emerged in Guildford, Cambridgeshire and West Yorkshire. Hazel Harding, the chairman of the Local Government Association's safer communities board, said: "Most cold callers are nothing more than a nuisance but a small number pose a serious threat, especially to older people. Thanks to the support of councils, police and local people, these areas are now a great deal safer."
A spokesman for Help the Aged said the NCCZs had made a great difference to old people's quality of life."
But critics say the bans unfairly target legitimate businesses. Richard Berry, the director of the Direct Selling Association, said: "We are as keen as anyone to rid the country of rogue traders but our 350,000 members generate £2 billion a year."
Andrea Slater, the president of Avon Cosmetics, which has more than 100,000 door-to-door sales people in the UK, said: "People should be given advice to deal with rogue traders but a blanket ban will threaten our business.

accymel 22-02-2007 13:22

Re: No Canvassers!

Well im sure if people want something they'll find a way of getting it themselves!! Avon have a website as do many other 'legit' companies, do we really need to have pressurised sales at our door :(

........ But we'll be able to have peace and quiet and not get disturbed by these un-wanted door knockers.

The area around Moorhead, I think a ban on cold calling was brought in because there's a high percentage of pensioners and they were targetted a couple of years ago. Not sure how it was sorted whether through neighbourhood watch scheme but does seem to work.

good

if i wanted to donate to charity i would and i dont see why they shoud be allowed to annoy people just because they are a charity , its bad enough having tins shoot at you in doorways which incidently is illigal

i do give to charity but i do it on my own terms and to who i choose and when i choose :)

We've had two this week already trying to sell double glazing. Not really had many before and suddenly two in a week. NOT funny when youre working shifts.

It's not so much them calling that annoys me as them not taking no for an answer. I feel ignorant shutting the door on people but if they continue to stand there when I have said "No thank you I do not want one." then that's really their problem. Shooo! Go away! Depart! Be gone!

LancYorkYankee 23-02-2007 18:35

Re: No Canvassers!

Willow, with proper warning, after saying no thanks, a dose of pepper spray may encourage them off your property!;) That's after they recover from the temporary burning blindness of said deterrant.:D

That irritates me too, they always seem to call at really inconvenient times, the last one I had was telling me that all phones had to be changed over to his company (cant remember which one) as it was a government led change over, I told him very politely to go away:D

We do the same thing Spuggie J. Figure if they have something important that truly concerns us then they'll leave a message.

Sidenote: We still have a message sent by a British Airways Rep. She had the most delightful English accent. Hmm... I should leave my number so I can get recordings of various Accywebbers. However, please no crank calls you few!) :p

Afraid to say a few years ago I did some door canvasing (my name and address will be witheld for fear of revenge attacks :D )
Funny thing is that after being brainwashed during training you start to belive you are doing the occupant a great favour in telling them about the fantastic offers you have for them... no amount of signs, threats of dogs, or doors slammed in your face will deter you from doing your public duty..you are a disciple placed on this earth to preach the good work of ..Everest,Supreme Glaze, and whoever. :D

Re: No Canvassers!

Speaking of canvassers, its really getting bad now - anyone else live around the Laneside area that are getting more than normal? TWO today, at least 3 last week... We never used to get any and all of a sudden we're being bombarded. It is getting quite worrying, as if we are being targeted and I'm starting to wonder if they are checking out the property etc
