Taxing you car is soo easy...

... isnt it? No it isnt. I went down to the main post office today with green slip from V5, MOT and insurance. Everything you need then i thought to get your 6 months tax. WRONG! "Oh but sir because you dont have your reminder slip it will have to start from the beginning of feb". Well that only gives me 5 months tax doesnt it? It says that the green slip is valid so why do i only get 5 months instead of 6? I refuse to pay full price when i am not getting the full 6 months!

Re: Taxing you car is soo easy...

When you only bought the car a week ago its not that easy as the DVLA hasnt sent it out yet. And when i got the reminder from the last owner and phoned up to see if this would be fine i was told that yes it is so long as she has insurance on the car! She bloody sold it so why the hell would she be insured on the damn thing!!!?

You can do it by Internet these days if all your details are correct.

You need a credit or debit card and seeing as i go a lil mental with money when i have one i dont bother with them.

Only 6 months? Don't get mugged and buy a full 12 months. The savings are worth it!

Has the car got any tax on it now? if not they will not do it till near the end of the month or you will have to pay from the beginning of the month, think they allow 3 days so you should be Ok now, but not to drive it though :)

Re: Taxing you car is soo easy...

Re: Taxing you car is soo easy...

Ok, if you go back tomorrow you should be able to do it for 6 month, they wont give you a disk for the following month when only part way through a month, that way you could put the disk in and get more than 6 month out of it - illegally of coarse, I know in your case the car is already taxed so you wouldn't do it but the post office staff don't know that

You're not bothered about saving money by taxing for 12 months instead of 6 but you are bothered about only getting 5 months when you pay for 6? Me no comprende.

Re: Taxing you car is soo easy...

In ref to KSH, the PO do know that cars are already taxed. When we bought one of Julies teh seller had sent the tax disk back and when I went to tax it it must not have been processed as the lady on the counter said "Its already taxed".

I have never understood why they can't offer a monthly purchase scheme where you pay direct debit each month and when the reminder comes out it says its already paid and you just need to show your docs to get the disk. I think there are a lot of people who can afford ~£10-15/month but finding £200 in one lump sum is hard.

Even better IMHO is stick it on fuel, gas guzzling/high mileage drivers pay more, no-one can avoid it, no need to pay for all teh admin involved in collection/chasing non payers etc. Problem is no Gov will ever have the balls to do it.

Re: Taxing you car is soo easy...

They used to sell savings up stamps with a little card to stick them on so you could effectively pay monthly but you had to keep it yourself. Of course you could always just keep £15 or so aside each month but it's easier not to spend it if it's a stamp stuck on a card. Do they still do that?

I can afford not to be bothered about it though. Dont think they do saving stamps as ive never heard about it. a direct debit for some would be much better. id do it that way.
