Latest Train Crash

I'm sure we've all seen the news about the train coming off the rails in Cumbria.. saddened to hear of the so far one fatality and several seriously injured, having seen the reports on the news i'ts amazing the casualties were not even worse considering 180 passengers were travelling on the train.

It's pretty close to home.. I have travelled on this line myself and as it is the line into Preston from London up to Glasgow.. I hope all friends and relatives of Accy webbers are not involed and are OK.

From reports so far appears that it could be another line fault, fortunately the train is built to very high standards and is rock solid. Sympathies go out to the families of the lady who died and those with injured relatives. Another bad day for the railway

Re: Latest Train Crash

Whenever I hear of anything like this my first reaction is to wonder if anyone I know has been hurt - and then if anyone related to anyone I know. Somehow I feel selfish doing that though, as if it's not as serious when I don't know anyone involved. Strange isn't it? It's just as awful for all those whose families and friends are involved if you know what I mean.

I worry about travelling by train when I hear of accidents, and then I remind myself of all the times trains travel in safety. Was this caused by something on the line? On a way it's reassuring if it wasn't a technical fault because that means it's not as likely to happen again. I heard something about vandalism - if so then I hope they catch the culprits and treat it as manslaughter.

Vandalism seems unliklry the train was miles from anywere, but if it was it was sombody intent on murdering lots of people, thats about as sick as it gets!

Re: Latest Train Crash

It looks like the investigation is looking at points failure. However, when I came up on a Pendolino nine days ago, there appeared to be some problem with the rear bogey in the front carriage. I was sat right above this and the suspension seemed to have gone completely, so that every time we passed over points there was a massive cracking sound and a judder. I've been travelling on these trains every 2/3 weeks for a few years now so I estimate I've been on most of the Virgin fleet and this is the first time I've experianced 'owt like this.

Re: Latest Train Crash

It is very sad. I was on the same train two weeks earlier. It always suprises me that we are forced by law to wear seat belts on all modes of transport except buses and trains.

I once worked with a lad in London that was involved in the Clapham train crash. He actually came into work afterwards, and never really spoke about it. It was years later that I saw him on Kilroy talking about how the incident had affected his life, and how he had turned to drink to help blot out some of the things he saw, including the girl he was travelling with being decapitated.:(

i travel on a lot of trains (being the saddo i am) when your on a pendoleno you cant feel it tilting at all, they are the most comfortable trains ive ever been on, the one before it, the voyager is very similar but doesnt tilt(they're a bit crap inside though)....good on virgin for making such safe trains

Are you sure? I thought the Voyager tilted as well, the difference being that this train is diesel and tends to be shorter than the electric Pendolino. I was on a Voyager about 6 weeks ago and I'm pretty certain it tilted, although I must admit I'd had a few sherberts at the time.

Re: Latest Train Crash

lol ok i may be wrong, but they definately dont tilt like pendolino's, they are class trains

Pendi's do tilt and I love em to bits. Not only are they comfortable but they are robust as this tragic incident has shown. I always travel to Accy on this route and still will.

I aint woken up yet and do they tilt aint a clue aint noticed especially since they "upgraded" the line. :p :p :p :p :p

Just as a spanner here

The principal differences between the Voyager and Super Voyager fleet are that the Super Voyager usually consists of five carriages rather than the Voyager's four, and like the Pendolino can tilt when going around curves in order to allow higher speeds. This means that Super Voyager units have significantly more complex bogies than do Voyagers.
Both models are powered by Cummins QSK19 engines, with each carriage featuring its own engine.

Re: Latest Train Crash

I was just listening to the interview on the radio this morning where the spokesman said that, although they hadn't ruled out other possibilities, it looks like a problem with the points. The interviewer was trying to get him to admit that they don't do as thorough an inspection these days as they used to, but he kind of wangled out of it.

I remember years ago travelling on a test run of one of the early APTs which tilted, coming up from London to Preston. I was just waiting for my usual train, as you do, when a chap came up to me and asked if I'd be willing to try out this new fangled creation and I'd get home a lot quicker. It seemed really strange at the time, the only way the passengers knew they were tilting was by looking outside at the scenery. A lot of us spilled drinks because we were holding them 'level' which of course wasn't level at all! We were all given a questionaire to fill in about what we thought of it. Some of the older passengers decided it would never catch on.

Re: Latest Train Crash

funny thing is
at the beginning of last week i was covering the late rail service from preston to carlisle because they were working on this stretch of line
(not sure exactly what they were doing though)

and guess where i'm off to today!

they reckon about 6 weeks of replacement coaches
the proverbial has definately hit the fan at work!

Re: Latest Train Crash

only got 2 trips one direct up to carlisle and one return via penrith oxenholme and lancaster.

There is more than one line from Preston to Glasgow? Well I never. I haven't seen a rail map for years - probably back when Accy had a Manchester line!

Yes there is well 2 actually. Once came down via the Carlisle to Settle line and down the line through Clitheroe and Blackburn to reach Carlise. Or you travel to leeds and go up the east coast via Edinburgh to Glasgow.

Re: Latest Train Crash

Oh I knew about the Leeds to Edinburgh line. It's not a Preston to Glasgow line though. I thought she meant there was another one of those lurking about somewhere. :D If you really wanted to you could go down to Wales, sail across to Dublin, travel up to Stranraer, get the ferry to Larne........ yes OK I know I'm being daft.
