I thought it was the Japs.... but what the hell, they were horrific scenes of cruelty. There will probably be some coverage on the BBC website LYY.

Re: dolphins

They had a cheek to call it humane. It reminded me of the seal pup culls in North America. Sell some to play pen aquariums and eat the rest is not on. Japan wanted a resumption of whaling and as they aint getting their own way they are going after it small friendly cousin.

Re: dolphins

I didn't see it and I'm glad, it would have sickened me, I'm not a massive fan of the far east, always thought they were cruel. I have a cousin who's half Cantonese and it always knocked me sick with what she was prepared to eat, hopefully this cruel act will be banned.

If it walks the Chinese will eat it,
if it swims the Chinese will eat it,
if it flys the Chinese will eat it,
infact if it's got eyes and a mouth they'll eat it,
And trust you to see a bright side to it Chav, your living up to my expectations, I'am suprised you don't like a dolphin sandwich or two.

Re: dolphins

It's not so much what people will eat as how they go about killing and hunting that is appalling.

Re: dolphins

i can see the fishermans point though
it is there way of life and has been for several hundreds of years
it is what they know
it is in one sense just the same as an african/indian fisherman fishing with spears only the fish are bigger and to some people cuter
the western world has a love of this animal but unfortunately to them it is just a food source
as the news report said maybe it is not about changing their minds about fishing for dolphins but educating them how to fish in a more 'humane' (and i use the term very loosely as what is humane about catching fish in a net and then leaving them to suffocate to death which is still a painful and drawn out way to die) way.
if you think about it if it was left to animal rights activists we would all be living on lettuce and lentils and the steak and ale pie down your local would be detined to the grim darkness of history leaving many businesses no alternative but to shut up shop and thus destroy all world economy.
just think what would've happened all those years ago if ancient cavemen had thought awww we can't kill that woolly mammoth it's far too cute
the human race would've been extinct before you know it
and you and i would not be here discussing whether or not killing animals to feed yourselves and youre families is right or wrong

i'm not saying that i agree with the way in which this animal is fished for but i do try and look at the bigger picture.

Did woolly mammoths exist at the same time a cave men? I'm not very good on prehistoric history.

jedimaster 01-03-2007 14:23

Re: dolphins

according to ancient cave drawings yes and it has been proved that they were hunted by prehistoric man

Re: dolphins

you misunderstand me!

could you rephrase your point to make it a little clearer as to what it is youre trying to say.

humans extinct, dolphins trusting humans connection???

what exactly is your point here

not being funny or anything i genuinely don't understand and am eager to hear what you're thinking

SPUGGIE J 01-03-2007 15:43

Re: dolphins

I may not be happy at the way it is done but I have to agree with the points jedimaster made. If something has to be killed for food let it be as painless as possible. I am not a fan of dolphins in aquariums (have seen them in the wild) or animals in zoo's (unless conservation is needed) but a happy medium needs to be found. What we dont see as food here is classed as food in other countries and vice versa. Unless the whole planet becam vegans overnight there will always be this.

its none of anyone elses buisness what they eat or do

if we had dolphins in our waters years ago we would be eating dolphins too instead of haddock or cod but we didnt so we didnt evolve eating dolphins as part of our diet

good luck to the chineese 1 dolphin goes a lot further than 1 cod

We had and still do. Mind you it must have been a hell of a job to catch one in cold British waters in the Neolithic era.

Re: dolphins

Points well made Jedi and SpuggieJ. Traditions with this type of thing should be honored, understood, and respected. It would be good if they were more humane about the round-up but that is just my opinion. I hate to think of any animal being torn up as it's still alive.

As a farmer and somewhat of a hunter, I understand the needs that animals meet in our lives. The killing part is rarely something that I like doing. Unless it is one of the really mean roosters, a woodchuck, or a fox!
