Contamination Or Not ??
Investigations into the possible contamination of petrol that is knackering up cars, after huge complaints of cars breaking down after being filled up suspiciously, all displaying same problem of cars cutting power & needing replacement part, now struggling to get stocks in say garages. The 2 supermarkets particularly blamed say theirs is fine theres no contamination of their fuel.
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/01032007/32...amination.html So whats going on ???? Any local problems??? |
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
Some of the cheaper petrol might not be as well refined and is course in comparison to the premium stuff. As cars get more sifisticated it is easier for them to break down due to petrol problems. A friend of mine wont use the cheaper supermarket stuff as he notices a reduction in performance the same if he fills with petrol from a Jet garage.
These were that a refinery had taken "too wide a cut" with the crude oil allowing other products to mix with the gasoline. Supermarket cheap stuff An octane enhancer might not have been added to gasoline which needed one; sporty models goosed or perhaps a biofuel like bioethanol was put into cars which were not designed to run on them. Err that implies the motorist is somewhat scatterbrained which considering repair costs dosnt sound like something they would do. The other answer could be a govenment conspiricy to keep cars of the road. |
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
They were saying on GMTV this morning [yes i was up early :(] that some cases of fuel could of been mixed with ethonol & simular substances that could result in whats happened but again specualtion till tommorow hopefully when all the tests have been done & anaylised.

Re: Contamination Or Not ??

Re: Contamination Or Not ??
What about a terrorist attack? Nah! Too far fetched!!!
I notice that both Tesco and Morrisons are saying that there is nothing wrong with their petrol and checks at the pumps confirm it. Well they would, wouldn’t they? Can anyone imagine Tesco coming clean and say, “Yes our petrol was contaminated. Please form an orderly queue for your compensation.” They will fight this tooth and nail. The evidence is in the fuel tanks of the affected cars. Or is that too simple? |
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
I know someone who works for an oil company so he has a little bit of inside information. From what he said, the petrol was imported. Apparently, it was imported in a tanker that had previously had something else in it that wasn't cleaned out properly therefore contaminated it.
It's only Tesco from what he understands because they were the ones who had imported that tanker load. |

Re: Contamination Or Not ??
1st of all, 'one not washed out' tanker wouldn't cause SO much problems
Secondly, all petrol cars are/would be affected[1] terrorism - Thanks to everyone for giving them ideas You need reciepts for any claim, eBay Anyone? afetr all , if you don't havea receipt but someone else does................. <ian pats his LPG instalation with thanks> |
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
Disagree - could easily cause so much trouble.
One oil tanker probably carries enough petrol to fuel 30,000 to 50,000 car petrol tanks at least. All cars who filled up with that tanker load could be affected but not happened yet. It's not an immediate thing, could be hours or weeks before the car gives up the ghost. Also, not all drivers fill up with a full tank, some people might have a full tank (filled up at Total) then fill up again when only half used at (Tesco) then fill up again when only half used (at Total again) thereby diluting the problem so perhaps not causing the car to conk out. Terrorism - don't think it's possible to give them any more ideas than they already have. |

Re: Contamination Or Not ??
gayle
firstly, if it was an 'unwashed' tanker, it would take only one full tank of petrol to wash it out. secondly the number of places reporting issues, it would be nigh on impossible for this 'one mythical tanker' to deliver to all sites affected. The sites have been delivered to from many refining sites across the country the issue affects the O2 sensor in exhausts. (Old non Cat cars aren't affected at all as they don't have an O2 sensor), if you top up a half full car with 'contaminated' stuff its watered down to 50% original strength so it may not be an issue at all as we don't know what % is req to do teh damage. Remember that all Petrol contains all these additives anyway, its only an imbalance that seems to be causing a problem |
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
If there talking about importing a tanker full they probably mean a sea going tanker not a little road tank
|
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
Yes, that's what I mean - a sea tanker - perhaps I didn't explain properly.

Re: Contamination Or Not ??
It sounds like it's an imported tanker load and that could have been shipped out by road to loads of different petrol stations up and down the country.
|
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
Will be still in the holding tanks, they won't tell you they have 1000's of gallons of the dodgy stuff, they'll mix it in with the good stuff in small portions to get rid of it

Is it not oil they ship by sea and then refine it after it arrives?
 |

Not this lot - that's why it was cheaper, it was refined abroad and imported. You're right, most petrol is brought in as oil and then refined here. |
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
I don't buy at supermarkets anyway so hopefully it won't get to me, and from what i've read in the last few days I never will, when I buy petrol I want petrol, not 10% eco bio sh*te added made from corn or something
|
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
Ok thanks, just was curious because I've never heard of petrol being shipped by sea before, obviously they must have some specially adapted tankers for the stuff rather than the standard oil tanker.
:) |

Even one tanker(sea going) will drop at one point so why the national distribution of problems???? they don't move fuel around that much from a single site to cause the problems we have. So either its not what they are claiming or we need to have better traceability of where our fuel come from |
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
I don't know why they cant run motorcars off greenhouse gas there seems to be a lot of it about. On a more serious note whoever is held responsible will have a hefty bill to pay, if I had a car I wasn't very fond of I'd stick some in.
The ironic part of this situation is if any affected vehicles were not insured the owners will get nothing, only a clapped out motor. |
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
One thing is for certain – the culprit will deny any responsibility and blame everyone and everything else.
|
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
Some insurance companies do cover this problem you should check your policy for details.
|
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
Theyve found where its been contaminated - 4 of the storage tanks at the depot have silcone in it.
Just been watching the news. |
Re: Contamination Or Not ??
The Boom Town Rats had a hit with Silicine Chips inside my head heading for an overload, Siliocne is a material that is supposed to last forever, used in the medical profession tubes implants etc, easyly recycled but obviously not good for the health of a motor vehicle. Maybe this batch was made on mondays.:D
