Policeman's Helmets
This is a genuine question. My daughter has just asked me and I couldn't answer it adequately
Does anyone know why policeman's helmets are designed as they are? She was mainly asking about why constables helmets are so tall and have the pip on the top ...... but when I gave her my theory of why it could be, she pulled the sergeants flat peaked ones out as a trump card to throw my theory right out the window. |
Re: Policeman's Helmets
Oh dear, is it birds and bees time :D
|
Re: Policeman's Helmets
LOL! That would have been easier to answer, I'd have just said I dunno :idunno: ............. ask you dad ;)

Re: Policeman's Helmets
Aaaaargh, too many jokes, too many jokes, not able to post, might cause offence, must run away....
....Gayle steps away from the thread. |
Re: Policeman's Helmets
Apparently the reason it's shaped that way is to cover a male streakers modesty :)

Re: Policeman's Helmets
And just clear the way for the queue of women who want to meet the man who fits into a policeman's helmet. ;)
Ooops, I'm not supposed to be posting on this thread. |
Re: Policeman's Helmets
Too make the policeman look taller as he is more likely to be in dodgy situations than a sergeant, who as a rule in those days stayed in the police station, they also had various designs to distinguish the different members of forces. Bumblebees Lancsdave.:D

Re: Policeman's Helmets
I think the size issue is just wishfil thinking on your part ladies. The pip is a strong point and is protective as is the shape. It was designed so that bobbies could be knocked on the head without being knock out.........I think.
Would you like me to come over and demonstrate :D |
Re: Policeman's Helmets

Re: Policeman's Helmets
The height thing could have been a point in the olden days with bobbies on the beat and one blows a whistle to call for help. The other bobbies come running and they can see where their colleague is because his helmet stands out above the crowd. Just my theory.

Re: Policeman's Helmets
I think other people have answered the question already but...
they were designed with a tall crown both to be visible in a crowd, and well made enough to offer protection if bashed on the head by a passing baddie, and was adopted by the Met, and other forces, in the 1860's. It was originally a reinforced top hat. Which was designed to be strong enough to be stood on, should the need arise. The proper name for the traditional Bobbies headgear is the 'Custodian helmet'. Of course with the introduction of police cars other flater types of headgear needed to be introduced...it was either that or have the cops driving around in Noddy cars.:D |

Thats amazing !! Not only did you answer the question but you realised the reason Tink's daughter asked the question was because she had just been out in Tink's new car, during which they were stopped by a copper :banhat: |

Re: Policeman's Helmets
helmets were made tall so young lads hiding over the hags lodge wall could knock them off easily with snowballs. (least thats what i used to think):D

Re: Policeman's Helmets
As revealed on the TV the other evening, or was it on the wireless, apparently a pregnant woman can pee into a bobby’s helmet if there is no other place for her to go. I don’t know if it is true or not.
But a man can pass water on the public highway if he does so against the near side front wheel of his vehicle. Some throw back from the horse and cart days. |
