Anything for the weekend Sir?

The government are bringing in new measures to get the long term unemployed back into work.

These will include free haircuts, free new suits, and the free removal of tattoos.

A good idea, or madness?

in principle the idea is sound, but people need to be BETTER OFF by returning to work, not WORSE, as is the case now. but the idea of bribing them with suits etc etc.is not just madness its wrong.:(

They would be better off bringing in subscription , that would both bring down the unemployment list , and sort out one or two yobbos..

I think you meant conscription GC :D

As for the original post, its always been a case that established long term unemployed are usually far better off on benefits than going to work. Until the level of beneits is brought down to a level that it provides a very basic existance(so that we don't have the bleeding hearts screaming that we can't allow the poor dears to starve) and thus working would provide a better quality of life then it won't happen.

Another headline-grabbing gimmick from a gimmick-obsessed government.

I thought they were aiming it at lone parents for starters. This morning on the radio they said every loan parent whose youngest child was 12 or above should be 'encouraged' back to work. On the face of it, OK an average 12 year old can survive as a latch-key kid but wasn't that supposed to be a deplorable situation? Also not all 12 year olds are equal and some have physical and mental needs so hopefully those will be considered. Then there was mention of bringing the age limit down to 11, then 10 etc etc. Surely what would ultimately be required then would be more affordable childcare?

Will it work? Probably not.

I agree with Granny. Bring back conscription and get some of the teenage yobbos off the streets first before targetting more vulnerable groups.

I agree with getting people back to work but I dont think you can generalise, they need to look at individual cases. A child of 11/12 should not be expected to be on their own after school whilst a parent is still at work, though a job during school hours would work ok. I think Entwisi is right when he says the amount of benefit given, people wont want to give that up for a job that pays less.

No you have to get to the root of the problem. Everyone knows that if it wasn't for single parents there wouldn't be any teenage yobs on the streets.

They should sterilise everyone from birth just in case they ever grow up and become a single parent because it might turn out they choose some selfish person to have children with who might leave them and make them single parents.

They should also track down all the absent parents who don't contribute to their childrens lives and give them half the child benefit to spend in the pub so they don't feel left out.

Is that tongue in cheek Dave?
I disagree you cant blame the yobs on single parents, its lack of discipline both at home and at school which happens even in 2 parent families.

First any government needs to make it viable to return to work, then i believe many would. you would then be left with those who cant/or wont, return. then they could target big time the ones that wont. or is that too simple for this bullsh** crazy goverment.;)

Every year the government drags this subject out of the hat, notices go out calling for all those on long term sick to be hauled in for a medical, what you have to remember there are some genuine cases who cannot work, or are unemployable because of company insurance rules. The skyvers will be queing up at Welfare Rights to get their forms filled in and appeals prepared, there will also be an epidemic of walking sticks disease, but all those on the 'sick' are tarred with the same brush and this is unfair.

Can I turn your argument around entwisi and say that if workers got higher wages there would be a better chance of many people going back to work.

Your argument is the same tired old dross from people who are in work. They soon change their tune when they get made redundant and can’t get back into their type of work and have to take on a job paying the minimum wage.

The real problem has been the government ordered minimum wage. Now businesses only offer that minimum rather than the real going rate for the job.

Incidentally the level of benefits is at subsistence level now.

Yes Willow, altho we got offer of no haircuts or suits just 'get back to work', i went for those LPND job centre interviews required, last wednesday & was told about this, & boy were they not joking!!! PRESSURE is on already & my youngest is 9!!!! They dont give a hoot about whether u have childcare, its a case of well sort the job out 1st & work around it, oh there is a huge waiting list for new era after school club but no worries u can give yer kids a key & they can see to themselves:eek:

..............erm now who does get the blame for unsuperivsed kids turning to yobbos with asbo's.................errr u guessed it single parents:rolleyes: ... yet now u all realise that we are pushed to work & this gov is pushing us to get to work [yes we do want to u know!!] but the reality is the poor provision of childcare facilities available so that SP's can work as other parents - i notice Tony Blair sweep that under the carpet sharpish!!!

Now Mr Blair u cant have one without the other!!!
