Sorry, I didn't think shooting would hurt.

An Oswaldtwistle teenager escaped jail after shooting someone, when his defence that he did not intend to cause harm, was accepted.

Hello?

I thought that was the whole point of pointing a gun at someone, aiming, then pulling the trigger.

The teenager is reported as being a 'leading member of Oswaldtwistle Youth and Community Centre'.

Well yippy do, if he's a leading member of the group I wouldn't like to meet the rest.

As long as anti-social crimes like this don't result in custodial sentences, and only merit a slap on the wrist and a bit of a fine, which will probably be payed off at a pound a week if he's unemployed or until the courts get tired of chasing it and give up, then these young people will carry on doing what the hell they want to.

What a joke. Surely a custodial sentance would have sent a message out to all the other trouble makers.

Re: Sorry, I didn't think shooting would hurt.

It doesn't say whether the van which he shot from was stationary or moving, so we don't know if it was a drive by shooting or not, but even with plastic bullets this immitation firearm could have blinded someone for life, or seriously injured any child preent if his aim wasn't that good. He should have been banged up, otherwise they'll carry on thinking they can get away with everything.

How the hell can you buy an immitation gun that fires plastic bullets for only £4? That Burnley shop should be closed down.

Guess if you know the right people you can get away with anything.

I think these guns should be banned and he should have been made an example of!

Sadly I don't think that's the case.

It's the laws of the land which are lacking, as well as too many liberal magistrates and judges.

Those guns are available all over the place and can be extremely dangerous. There was a kid terrorising people with one on the camp site a couple of years ago. Just because they only fire plastic pellets doesn't mean they are harmless. As Garinda said they could blind someone.

Oh come on, it's the person that is dangerous not the gun.
A bread knife is dangerous shall we ban them?
When I finally flip my lid (more ;)) I intend to run through Accy market killing people with a knife and fork. Then laugh from my padded cell thinking about you lot eating a nice steak with chop sticks after they ban knives and forks :D

hang on what sort of gun has he used , if hes shot an air rifle at someone then yes he shoudl goto jail but at 4 quid it sounds like one of these B.B guns that fire little yellow plastic bullets in which case he probably did think it wouldnt seriously hurt anyone but he was still acting liek an idiot but its not realy a seriuos fire arm is it

A plastic pellet struck the victim, causing swelling and a circular mark on his arm
sounds like one of those toy guns to me and they hurt just as much as a spud gun does

the guy acted like an idiot and deserved a punch on teh nose for his actions but in fairness it sounds liek he was using a gun that children play with so i believe he didnt think it would cause serious harm but none the less hes still a prick for shooting passers by from the car

my mates kids play with guns like these and yes at close range they sting a little but its more annoying cleaning up the little yellow balls that they shoot than actualy getting shot

the paper has clearly over sensationalised it but what do you expect

Why didnt they just get the gun off him and shoot him with it - quick, easy and no court so no bad record. He wouldnt do it again would he?

Drive by shooting with a spud gun up Whiteash ...I tell you it getting more like the Bronx down them parts everyday!

Do the hardest spuds give the most sting? If so which variety of potato are best? ;)

Re: Sorry, I didn't think shooting would hurt.

I'd say a hard/waxey spud would hurt most.. but then again a more startchy/watery spud may help lubricate the projectile as to gain maximum velocity.

granny smiths apples were pretty good in spud guns , carrot didnt seem to hurt so much

Re: Sorry, I didn't think shooting would hurt.

to be honest i think this particular gun was the modern day equivalent to a catapult,(which was probably more dangerous) as you could fire nuts n bolts and anything from em. thats not to say the lad was not a total prick, but dont think its a hanging (custodial) offence,

'Sykes, said to be a leading member of Oswaldtwistle Youth and Community Centre, had earlier admitted possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.'

Doesn't sound like a kiddies toy, or the actions of a loveable teen just fooling around.

Sounds like a real villian... what did he make his firearm out of?.. a block of soap and some shoe polish?

I don't know, perhaps I'll send him down to London, and point it at you under Vauxhall Bridge one dark and foggy night, and then perhaps you can tell us after he's shot you with it.

Fair enough.. always said a gun is a gun these days..and people have been shot dead carrying a table leg ...but do you really belive this idiot should be banged up?.. he did get a suspended prison sentence and 150 service,fined..and maybe the the best deterrent of all.. being made to look like an idiot in a chat forum!

Yes, I wouldn't have said it otherwise.

Re: Sorry, I didn't think shooting would hurt.

Those plastic pellets are more dangerous than bits of spud. One hit me on the arm and it was quite a sharp pain. And yes chasing after and shooting little kids in the face on the camp site is in my opinion terrorising them. Luckily no-one was hit in the eye but one child was hit very close to his eye and was running across the field crying and screaming. These guns are on open sale and anyone can buy them. Some of them look very much like real weapons and I'm sure in a robbery situation for example they would be very convincing.

Re: Sorry, I didn't think shooting would hurt.

I dont think these guns should be available and the fact these can be bought by anyone is scary. Last year my other half and 4 yr old daughter were shot at with a pellet gun whilst walking home from school, the pellet fortunately hit a garage door just as they walked past it but it could have cause serious injury.
