John Inman, the star of 1970s sitcom Are You Being Served?, has died in hospital at the age of 71.

The actor died in St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, west London, after being ill for some time with hepatitis A.

Inman had been taken into hospital for tests after problems with his liver.

Hepatitis A is an inflammation of the liver caused through eating contaminated food, which the star believed was how he came to have the virus.

Comedy star John Inman His illness was revealed after it forced him to cancel the opening of a pantomime in London on December 9, 2004. He never worked again.

His spokesman Phil Dale said: "John, through his character Mr Humphries of Are You Being Served?, was known and loved throughout the world.

An absolute diamond of a man who portrayed Mr Humphreys, a character that was always there in real life, but had never been acted before, to a tee.

He came across as being a genuinely nice bloke..it's shame.
And for him to catch a killer virus just from eating something is frightening.

Re: i,m free

When I first moved to London I worked for six months at Simpsons of Piccadilly. It was the store that Are You Being Served was based on, as one of the writers used to work there. The inspiration for Mrs Slocomb and Mr Humphries still worked there, and John Inman became friends with the man who the Mr Humphries character was based on. He was always very nice, and usually had the place in uproar.

Incidentally growing up I hated the character, and found him cringeworthy. Now I like it.:)

I thought he was hillarious, especially when I was younger. I'm sure that we've all used the phrase "I'm Free" at some point!

Rest In Peace. :daisy:

Not really a fan of Mr Inmans or AYBS,but i'm sure he was a top bloke as well as a comedy actor. It's always rather sad when one of our older comedians passes on,there can't be that many left now.:(
