Tory, Labor, Conservative??
 

Please explain what the differences are between these groups. Also, are most Accywebbers one or the other?

Maybe best for Steeljack or Billcat. any idea where these parties would fall as comapred to the US' Republicans, Conservatives, Democrats, Liberals, Independant, Green Party . . .

there used to be a big differance between Labour n Conservative (tory) is Conservative brian, Labour always used to be the working class party which is how i was brought up. Conservative was always middleclass n upwards, there was a few exeptions but that was general rule of thumb. now you can,t tell the ruddy differance unfortunately.

Traditionally the Conservative/Tory party was the party of the ruling classes, and traces it's history back to the Whigs of the C18th and C19th.

The Labour party was formed right on the cusp of the C20th, from various political groups like the Fabian Society, and the newly formed Trade Unions amongst others.

The Conservatives are similar to your Republicans, and Labour to the Democrats. As was stated, there is very little real difference between the two nowadays. Also the traditional supporters can't be catagorised so easily, our first women Pm came from the more traditional party for instance, and Labour now have a lot of supporters from the middle classes, and visa versa.

The Liberal Democrats are really a spent force, although historically they've played an important role in our political history. They would only really hold any sway if there was a hung parliament.

The UK Greens are very similar to yours.

I'm sure we as a forum, have many differing political views, which is probably illustrated by the fact that we have a Labour Member of Parliament, and yet we have a Conservative controlled council.:D

labour and con very similar in teh fact that they will screw each other and then themselves or even their mothers to stay in power

lib dems would give our country to the imigrants and agree we should leave the country so as not to bother them , also would probably declare farting a danger to the ozone and have corks fitted to us

BNP are basicly nazi thugs but not as organised yet their hearts are in teh right place realy and are just a misunderstood bunch of lads

so whats teh difference between your parties over there lanky i only ask because our tony blair wants to know what flavour teh ass is of teh next president hes going to kiss

Brian , I think the main difference between US and UK (European) politics/thinking is that Europe went through a period known as the ' enlightenment' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Enlightenment, America seems to have missed this and still holds to many of the tenants of Puritanism , in the US everything is either good or evil , or like the old cowboy movies the good guy is the white hat and the baddies wears the black hat , many Americans I have met are unable to compromise and meet on the middle ground about anything , our current incumbant in the White House is a prime example .

Tony Blair has already announced he'll be standing down as Prime Minister in the next twelve months, therefore there will be no kissing of Pesidential ass, or as we Brits say, arse.:D

I ended up as:
Economic Left/Right: -5.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.44

However, for many of the questions I had to choose the nearest one to my true answer. Had there been a greater selection of answers I reckon I would have ended up:
Economic Left/Right: +1
Meaning that there should be a fairer distribution of the nation’s wealth but also rewarding those who make a larger contribution.
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: +2
Meaning that society has to have rules for people to follow but they have to be fair and applicable equally to all.
