An Egg!!

I did start a thread a few weeks ago about my budgies but I couldn't seem to find it tonight.

They went and had an egg today.............how wonderful!!

Thats great June, do you just wait now?

junetta 09-03-2007 20:38

Re: An Egg!!

It seems so, Grego, eighteen days before it hatches. From what I've read on the internet she could have one every other day for a week!

I have a pic but I can't seem to load it.............I'll try again later.

Congratulations to you all.:)

Was it the rude pictures of budgies 'doing it' that I told you to show them, that you think did the trick?:D

It might have helped Rindy, one never knows! I'm getting really cross as I can't seem to load the photo. Either I'm more stupid than I think or, well, happen I'm more stupid than I think!

I just want you all to see the egg.

yup can see it on your blog but how do you keep it warm? wheres the budgies arent they supposed to be sitting on it so then it'll hatch?

garinda 09-03-2007 23:52

Re: An Egg!!

How ya gonna get in the lil box to hatch it?:D

junetta 09-03-2007 23:56

Re: An Egg!!

She popped out for a few moments to eat this afternoon so we took a chance and opened the nesting box to take the pic.

I won't do it again for a day or two as she got a bit stroppy with us and rushed back in. I reckon she laid the egg the day before and could be due another tomorrow. Exciting stuff!!

Re: An Egg!!

I got there at long last! One little egg gave me all this stress!

My next mission is to have one of those baby ticker things on my blog to countdown the hatching........sick and sad though I am!

Re: An Egg!!

Congratulations on the laying of your egg.....You must let us know if you get any little additions to your budgie family out of it.. Good luck. :D

junetta 10-03-2007 11:38

Re: An Egg!!

I'm trying to take a peek to see if she's laid any more but she hasn't been out of the nesting box yet.

I think it might be too late to set up a web cam and I'm kicking myself for not having thought of it. Not to worry, I'll keep you all posted on progress.

Re: An Egg!!

re Junettas new egg / eggs , ok a dumb question here about hatching eggs , never having raised chickens or birds, can someone explain how when a bird lays eggs over several days how they all manage to hatch at around the same time and not a day apart .

maybe I need to watch more nature TV shows :D :D :D

:p oh little babies how sweet

Have you held it to a light to see if there is something in there?
we had a bird once who kept laying eggs and there was nowt in it:confused:
never did have any babies :(

junetta 11-03-2007 21:56

Re: An Egg!!

She doesn't leave it for very long and I'm wary of touching it in case she rejects it. I did catch her and her 'hubby' in the act the other day and so the chances are that it has been fertilized.

We'll just wait awhile.

WillowTheWhisp 11-03-2007 23:23

Re: An Egg!!

Do budgies etc lay unfertilized eggs? I've never seen any from a budgie.

junetta 12-03-2007 23:08

Re: An Egg!!

I've read loads of stuff on budgie breeding during the last year or so and it seems that egg number two should turn up a couple of days after the first. It should be a clutch of up to six eggs.

It's now the end of day three and still no sign of another. It looks like Ken is destined to be an only child!

Juanita is still in her nesting box, so happen all is well. I feel a bit worried though.

Re: An Egg!!

Bad news I'm afraid.

I've been checking out Ken Egg every three days or so and all seemed fine. However, we came home this evening to find he had completely disappeared.

As he was due to hatch within a day or so and was fine earlier today, I'm completely lost on this one.

Really gutted too! Poor Ken x

I have a girl and a boy budgie who live together in their cage. How do I get them to make babies? I know I need a nesting box - but is that all I need to give them, and they just go in and "do the business"?

Thats strange June, no sign of him anywhere?

Kisser 26-03-2007 09:49

Re: An Egg!!

Maybe the egg was empty and it has been squashed and the birds have eaten the shell thinking it was grit?

junetta 26-03-2007 10:29

Re: An Egg!!

That's the only thing I can think of, Kisser. All you do is provide the nesting box and they do the rest. You need to make sure that they have a good supply of calcium and grit. Fresh veg is good too, but not cabbage as it seems that is bad for them. Hope you have better luck than I've had.

grego 26-03-2007 10:36

Me too, Miss Kitty .. was following with interest.

At work, we have one of the ducks nesting in a window box .. we are all watching her with care ... problem is, the box is on a ledge about 4 and 1/2 feet high, so if any ducklings are produced, how they all gonna' get down ?

Maybe we can get together something like those escape chutes in aeroplanes .. any suggestions welcome.

shillelagh 26-03-2007 23:49

Re: An Egg!!

ramps like what chickens have katex

katex 03-04-2007 19:30

Re: An Egg!!

Well, the ducklings hatched out today (was thinking she may have got her foot caught in one of the roots, but seems incubation is 28 days !),
Excitement at work, everybody worried that they may fall off the ledge and quickly rise to the great nest in the sky. Lots of inventive suggestions.

Came out tonight and looks like maintenance have moved the box to lower ground .. aren't some people lovely :D Just hope those bloody magpies don't get 'em.

Can't wait to see them in the morning .. sorta' got me feeling maternal.

Hope you have another soon Junetta .. at least will be in safe hands when they hatch. x

WillowTheWhisp 03-04-2007 19:38

Re: An Egg!!

Good to hear there was a happy solution to your ducks Katex.

:( Such a shame about your egg June. Hope there'll be another one and a successful birth eventually.

junetta 03-04-2007 22:31

Re: An Egg!!

That's lovely Katex. Please get some pics when they start waddling about.

I've left the nest box in place and can only hope. Juanita is still spending most of her day in there, minus Ken egg. I'm off to England on Friday so 'im indoors is in charge for a couple of weeks. Maybe there might be an egg or two whilst I'm away. Fingers crossed!

Would appear that our new borns are now domiciled in the ex-wages office, complete with water and straw and being fed on 'bread!' .. no, no, no,please don't feed ducks bread :( ... there are 10 of 'em by the way.

Not sure this is good for them, they surely need the water asap, would think.
Definitely getting strong pong in this office and figure they will have to take up some of the carpet tiles.

Problem is encouraging the mother to walk down the corridor, out through the door, across to the car park into the lodge. She still keeps popping back into the window box (now indoor floor box) as still a couple of eggs in there.
The ducklings don't seem to be able to get back into the box, even though small ramp has been constructed .. 'course, I suppose, ducklings don't have an engineering qualification and understand that this is the way up

Await tomorrow's strategy.

Ok .. so haven't quite got me jpegs right .. but you get the idea.
