Mind you I agree, root canals can be painful. I know I won't be believed, but I once fell asleep (not with anaesthetic) and was told I was snoring merrily.

Novocaine is the same type of thing as Lidocaine (which is what we use in the UK). It is what is known as a local anaesthetic whereas the going to sleep stuff is a general aneasthetic. There are loads of different types of anaesthetic these days including regional blocks, epidural, spinal, local and general. They all fall under the blanket term of anaesthetic...:)
