Smoking ban - Sheesh!

As a non-smoker I'm all for banning smoking in restaurants so that it doesn't affect the food. I'm on the fence regarding pubs because I feel that if I choose to go somewhere smoky then it's my choice and nobody forced me to go there so I have no business moaning about it but it is nicer when the air isn't thick with fog.

However, what hadn't dawned on me until now is that the ban will also apply to shisha cafes where people actually go to actually smoke yer actual shisha pipes! Sheesh! I mean it's like banning alcohol from pubs.

This looks like 'baited hook', shisha cafe's are usually situated in areas of heavy immigration, I saw some for sale on Accy flea market, good one willow it will be interesting to see if a way is found round this.

There's one in Blackburn on Darwen St.

This is definitely for social smoking

Those hookah pipes were also used for smoking dope, mainly opium and hashish.

For a brief history on the hookah have a look at http://www.shishapipe.net/

There are loads of cafes in central London that have them, particularly in Bayswater.

I used to pop in after I'd had my after work swim, for a coffee and a smoke.

Only tobacco, made it certainly hits the spot.:D

*L*

yeah loads of folks are really unhappy these are closing - if you go to edgeware rd in london you see a whole line of these places - some are so busy they open 24 hrs!!

i'm a regular shisha goer - and one of hte main reasons i go is that its not smoking at home etc. its social and relaxing - a laugh and joke etc. as much as i want one at home i'd never have one wiht kids around.

it seemed at some point they might be excluded but then the govt saw the probs it would have to enforce such a thing.

there's quite a few on wilmslow road too - musicana, shisha etc

Lolly 15-03-2007 15:38

Re: Smoking ban - Sheesh!

I've never used one but always wanted to. My mum had one in Tunisia that was Apple flavour and also a Cherry flavour. They should not be banned in the shops that are specifically for this. Its pathetic. I wonder if they have one in the pub in Westminster, the one that all the MPs go in, the one that will not enforce the smoking ban (funny that eh??)

WillowTheWhisp 15-03-2007 15:49

Re: Smoking ban - Sheesh!

Surely of the raison d'être for a shisha cafe is the smoking of shisha how can they ban smoking in them? It doesn't make sense.

Re: Smoking ban - Sheesh!

they're all gonna have to shut or change themselves to more restaurants/takeaway

they're not gonna b as busy as when they were a shisha place as most of the workers in there cant cook to save their lives

lolly we should do a meet up at a shisha place in blackburn one time :)

So you don't want the kids to get lung cancer or whatever from your smoking but you don't care that you might die from a smoking related illness and then the kids won't have a Dad.

Strange logic behind that one mate  :)

I'll say one thing in defense of shisha - the tobacco doesn't have all the additives that cigarettes have like rocket fuel and antifreeze. It's probably nowhere near as lethal.

Re: Smoking ban - Sheesh!

Hookah, shisha, nargile, waterpipe, what ever you want to call it.

In no way should the hookah be considered a dope smoking pipe! Hookahs and shisha have been smoked for 100's of years and all that is traditionally smoked in the hookah is molasses tobacco, usually a unflavoured black molasses tobbacco.

The smoking catapillar featured in alice and wonderland can never be banned, or we hope not anyway, but then again it does encourage hookah smoking!

The thing is smoking is smoking, is smoking, wether its a fag, a pipe, a cigar or anything else, Can you imagine what an uproar it would cause if these espablishments were allowed to stay open, more unnesessary tension:eek:

I agree with whoever it was that said it was like banning alcohol from pubs. It's a smoking place where everyone goes to smoke. It's not like they're affecting any poor innocent souls who are trying to have a cup of coffee - if you're in there then the reason is to smoke.

In fact, I actually think they should allow more of them to open - let all the smokers get together. Whilst they're there they might as well have a glass of beer as well. Oh, perhaps not! :D

Don't be so pessimistic - the government are otherwise well occupied  and so any amendment to the Act may need to be put on the 'back burner'

Good on them rules are there to be broken and challanged, (as long as it is/can be classed as a victimless crime).

If any pub dedicates a room for smoking and it is clearly for smokers only, why should they be told they cannot do it.

nortype 13-05-2009 15:04

legal loophole. smoking in pubs.

today's daily star. pub in barnsley doing seem's quite legit..

Re: Smoking ban - Sheesh!

As a ex smoker, I for one like the ban, I can go and have a nice meal, without some person smoking on the table next to me. I can go out to the pub and come home without needing to shower before bed and wash all my clothes.

The difference is very noticeable, as I work in Morocco, a country where they smoke a heck of a lot, I don't enjoy eating out there and my eyes sting in all the pubs.

The passengers on our planes even smoke in the toilets, this might seem like a bit of 'no victim' rule breaking, but if you don't put your cigarette out properly and throw it in the waste bin, you will start a fire, those sorts of thing bring aircraft down, it has happened in the past and will happen in the future. We just ban smokers caught in the toilets.

But to return to the original post, I have only seen those pipes in Morocco, it does seem crazy that an establishment set up for the purpose of this should be closed.

As you are an ex Smoker I for one wouldn't wish you to have to put up with someone smoking next to you if you are in the correct establishment, before the ban most Restaurants set aside tables for smokers/non smokers.

Being a smoker however I am no longer given the freedom of choice as to where I go for a ciggy, even though smoking is still legal and I am of a legal age to smoke.

I used to go into busy pub's shared by both groups, now most pubs struggle to make a living, let's all be allowed life choices, you can still choose not to enter smoking pubs and I should still be allowed to mix in a social atmosphere with fellow smokers.

There was supposed to be a great storm of non smokers taking over pubs where are they? Still at home drinking their cheap ASDA cans? We only see them on sunny days out on the benches we used all winter and then they have the nerve to complain!

Who kept the pub open so you can still join us?

I'll give you a hint, "Cough, Cough, God it's cold out here, pass me a non smoker I can warm up next to, what do you mean the pubs run out until summer?".

Ah, ya See I agree with No smoking on a plane for the reason you stated, (the action could effect othere's) this is sensible but as for pubs, people would not have to enter a room / pub dedicated for smoker's, who lets admit is probably a large percentage of the pubs clientel.

Re: Smoking ban - Sheesh!

And when that gets closed down, if they turn it into a bedroom, put a closer on the door and just call everyone in it "visitors" then they can smoke there too.
Exemption #4 in the act allows it.

Then when thats stopped, get an ill person & a nurse & call it a care home :D

good post less, most pubs/clubs now struggle to exist the smoking ban being the final nail, i read 3/5 pubs a day are closing in britain since the ban,i am not aware of ANY smoker that wishes to smoke in eating establishments, funny how in general "Ex Smokers" are happy with the ban in it?

It's a strange world isn't it?

We all used to know pubs that had a lock in and served after time, then the drinking law was changed and in theory they can now stay open 24/7.

Not long after that though the smoking ban was introduced, now, (although sadly not within the bounds of Hyndburn everyone around here is far too lawful to contemplate such a thing!), we all know of pubs that call last orders wait for the strangers to leave, out come the ash-trays, (yes the pubs kept them), and...

Yippeee! let's have a smoke-in.

Unfortunately the smoke was unable to read & couldn't tell it wasnt allowed to travel to the non smoking tables. :D

Now, so many people have got used to not being able to go to the pub or restaurants because of the smoke & smell that they have found other ways to enjoy themselves, even if this includes drinking cans from Asda. Such that they
do not want to change what they do.

Having chest problems I have always hated going to the pub because of the smoke, such that now I prefer drinking my Asda bought drinks at home.
yet I have tried going to the pub several times since, and it's still not that nice -
Firt you have to walk past the throng of smokers hanging around the doorway, so going in you get a chest full of smoke, then I get blotto from this stuff called "Black Cat" :D

I took my lad on his 18th to the pub 6 doors down from me, he got insulted by some drunk. I thought I'd give them a 2nd chance & took my wife in on her birthday for a drink. The beer was warm & tasted like gnats pee.

Pubs - no ta - it's Asda Alcohol Aisle fo me :D

The 'throng' of smokers don't want to be stood there, it's the nanny brigade that have forced us into this situation of every pub now having what appear to be unofficial bouncers.

Your son has my sympathy, just like with everything else you should learn to walk before you can run, practice with shandy's until you get used to the strength of the beer then perhaps you will refrain from insulting him!
