Well, would you?
I read something in one of the newspapers today about somewhere in Essex (I think) that has been marrying couples over the last three years and they have just found out that they were not licensed to do so.
All the couples who were married at this venue are now being told that they are not legally married. If that were you, would you exit your partnership without a backward glance.....or would you go through another ceremony with your beloved to make things legal? |
Re: Well, would you?
crikey that would be a shock, especially if the guys rich:D
even more if you where gonna divorce and told you cant have nowt cuz your not legally married! |
Re: Well, would you?
Yes, the paper brought out those two scenarios....apparently the case is going to be referred to the High Court.
Come on folks 'fess up....would you hitch yourself up the same partner again? |
Re: Well, would you?
If they had got wed in a Church like your supposed to do, or a regisitrars office , they wouldn't be having this problem. ;) ;) ;)
|
Re: Well, would you?
It isn't the fault of the couples though, they 'married' in good faith.......somebody at the venue made a monumental mistake in not renewing the licence to perform marriages.

Re: Well, would you?
No and never again!! One burning is enough without being daft enough to do it again. Feel sorry for those caught up in it though.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6430717.stm Is this what you were talking about Margaret...ironic that they were called the wedding rooms!!!!!!!!
|
Re: Well, would you?
Yes HR......but the story I read didn't have as much detail, and it made it sound as though the couples were still waiting for a High Court verdict.
|
Re: Well, would you?
Oh dear Margaret, what a wonderful thought, chance to get out of something you feel the mistake of your life had been committed ... :D Didn't they do summat like this on Corrie with Les and Cilla ?
Can't speak for myself, not in that position with a relationship .. ok go on .. tell us what you would do then .... ;) |
Re: Well, would you?
No Steeljack it didn't sound sarcastic at all.......and there are a lot of very tasteful venues......stately homes, castles and the like over here, that have licences to conduct marriages. For some people who don't go to church or have very religious beliefs, it is an acceptable alternative to the Register Office ceremony.
I was married at the Haslingden register office some 40 years ago......what a dismal place that was....not somewhere you could remember fondly, but it was either that or the church...and I didn't want to be hypocritical. |
Re: Well, would you?
Ah well Katex.........I might just play hard to get a second time round!
|
Re: Well, would you?
Or then again I might just decide to play the field....except I can't think that there would be many old fellers out there who would want to play in my field :)
|
Re: Well, would you?
It's not really 'going back' to the partner because you never 'left' the partner.
Marriage is only a piece of paper afterall. |
Re: Well, would you?
Shakermaker.....I didn't ask if you would go back....I asked if you would take your chance to exit the partnership.....to, in effect, become single again.....or would you 'marry' the person you thought you HAD married.

Surely people who wanted out of the relationship in the first place but were put off by the stigma/expense of divorce would indeed get out, and the rest who thought they were in the state's eyes 'married' would get the paperwork sorted. Though some may see no problem with how they have been living up until now and keep the situation as it is. Afterall, many many cohabiting couples have very healthy relationships and in lots of cases, healthier relationships than those of married couples as legal strains are not a problem. |
Re: Well, would you?
Margaret, I have my second wifes permission to answer your thread, the fact that she is looking over my shoulder has no bearing on the reply I would love to give you, you get married for better or worse, as was said to my first wife.:D

Re: Well, would you?
After 23 years with Cindy she's kinda grown on me. I think I'd keep her!;)

Re: Well, would you?
lost me first, who was a star, now with paris who is also a star. if them circumstances had applied to either, wouldnt make no differance i,d still be with em, guess i,m a lucky git.:)

Re: Well, would you?
Oooh, if those circumstances had applied to me and my ex husband I'd have walked away and never looked back. I could have spent the money that paid for the divorce on a new outfit, (the divorce only cost me £75).:D

Re: Well, would you?
I would marry her again without a doubt.
|
Re: Well, would you?
yep, me too, we hit 10 years in May and never been happier.
|
Re: Well, would you?
As I said in an earlier post...we got hitched on a wet Monday morning at the Haslingden register office...our 'worldly goods' amounted to £60...so it was an extremely low key occasion. My hubby has asked me to marry him in more lavish circumstances ever since...aproximately at two yearly intervals....and I have said 'NO' every time......because as far as I am concerned that one time was forever....regardless of the place and the lack of pomp and ceremony.....after all it isn't the pomp and ceremony that make a marriage.....is it?

Re: Well, would you?
My stepdaughter got married at Rockingham Castle, which is a lovely romantic setting and far nicer than a register office. I can fully understand non-church goers opting for locations like that rather than a dismal office. In fact our church doesn't exactly lend itself to nice photo locations and we had to go up Queens Park to get a bit of a scenic background.
Would I do it all again? Yes, if somebody else planned it for me! The organising did my head in last time!!! Would we get the honeymoon again as well? ;) |
