Here's an inequality which needs to be addressed

Quote:

Section 87 of the Public health act 1936 means that local authorities can charge a fee for use of cubicles but they are prohibited from charging for urinals.
Which means that men should legally always be able to wee for free but women do not automatically have this right. Good old Accy and Blackburn for their free loos - but if I recall correctly York has men's loos where you have to pay and so does Scarborough and Bridlington.

I think there should always be free ones available and they should be open later too. How many times have you gone into McDonalds for a free wee?

grego 22-03-2007 09:24

Re: Here's an inequality which needs to be addressed

Not a massive fan of public toilets, the ones in the Arndale are awful but sometimes you've no choice, I think a wee should be free for all. The ladies loos on Peel street seem ok though. Have used shop toilets when shopping they usually keep them smelling sweeter!

WillowTheWhisp 22-03-2007 09:32

Re: Here's an inequality which needs to be addressed

The Arndale ones are a joke - when they were refurbished I thought they might at least have moved the hand drier so it wasn't in the way of anyone trying to get into or out of that far cubicle!

Re: Here's an inequality which needs to be addressed

I agree I had to go in with a pram and it was really hard work, are they shut now?

WillowTheWhisp 22-03-2007 09:54

They were open on Saturday.

entwisi 22-03-2007 09:54

Re: Here's an inequality which needs to be addressed

there is also very little consideration of fathers with pushchairs. Its a nightmare finding somewhere I can go for a wee when I have Siobhan with me.

We want to WEE!

grego 22-03-2007 09:57

Re: Here's an inequality which needs to be addressed

I agree with you Entwisi, toilets and the like are more geared up for mothers and thats wrong.

my partner used to agree with that when our daughter was a baby, also have baby changing rooms in the ladies loos, what if he needed to do it, he couldnt go in there!!
but he used to use mother care instead in accrington but then that closed!! so there was nowhere to go:(

Well you could always go into the bushes ladies.:p

Mind you needing to answer the call with a pram has lead to arkward moments in the past. Another thing to entwisi's point about having the little uns out and about with there dads why is it labeled in some cases as mother and baby? To me that is as sexist as it comes!!!!!!!!

grego 22-03-2007 11:32

Re: Here's an inequality which needs to be addressed

There really should be parent and child rooms in all public toilets etc both male and female, it is very sexist at the mo.

you do have to consider the positive side though Spuggie

Imagine you're out and about with the wife and little one, suddenly a familiar odour wafts gently up from the pram. "<Insert Babies name here> done a poo love, lets find somewhere to change her... Oh dear its in the ladies, ah well, here you go.......... :D "

I would as well. Sod etiquette and all this gender guff the child's needs come first so yes if it was a ladies bog that had the bench thingy then in I would go. If arrested I would claim in court its abusing a child to leave it in a jobby filled nappy and cross my fingers.

At Skipton the men have to pay 20pence to get in. I remember posting(in another thread) the comment my hubby made to the toilet attendant.....'What 20 pence for a P' the attendant quickly replied....'No, it's 20 pence to get in, once you are in there you can do what you like' ;)

I agree with others, women shouldn't have to pay to have a pee if men don't, and there should be facilities for dads to spend a penny if they have a pram with them.

I'm suprised there isn't more of an out cry over this inequality.

The local authorities would be bending over backwards if it were a relgious or cultural problem to sort it out.

Annie and I were shocked to see all the pay bathrooms over there. They are very rare here in the States. Annie had to really go but refused to allow me to pay for it. Well the wee bit of German would make her want to pay. It's common in mainland Europe to pay to use the loo even in the shopping places.

I've been in a bit of a dither in some foreign places where they don't actually charge as such but there's a person sitting there at the entrance with a little dish of money, or sometimes not as the case may be. Do I put money in the dish or if there isn't a dish do I give them money, do I do so on the way in or on the way out, as a sort of thank you tip?

In some public toilets in Spain (well, it used to be so some 10 years ago) they have some old dear doling out the toilet paper.....if you don't pay you don't get any loo roll.

Yep and she's usually pretty stingy with it too! Moral of the story - always make sure you have a supply of tissues in your bag/pocket.

Margaret Pilkington 22-03-2007 20:15

Re: Here's an inequality which needs to be addressed

yes, Willow you are right about stingy.......I once asked for some more paper.......and the old dear pointed to the dish........she wanted more money.
Now I ALWAYS have tissues in my bag or may pocket.

This was one of Chris's bugbears - why are they all Mother and Baby rooms - where could he go when the babies needed changing.

He also hated Mothercare as well - don't father's care too?

I will go anywhere where it is free to pee as I begrudge paying to do a natural bodily function. Probably the only time I ever go in McDonalds is for a McPee. I have to agree that there is a bit of sexism going on with the mother and baby rooms, I'm surprised that nobody has jumped on that bandwagon yet and lobbied parliament.:D ;)

Hehehehe... I have peed for free in many and varied places including :- various places on the Lakeland Fells and Scottish Glens, I have peed on Mt Blanc, on the Asian squat type toilets in Turkey, Hong Kong and Bangkok, I have peed in Outback Dunnys with a watchful eye out for the dreaded 'dunny spiders,' I have also peed in a tarantula infested beach bog (hole in ground with 10 ft drop) somewhere in the Caribbean. Ossy bogs, or even the brook would be a breeze..:D

We've got 2 public loos in our village, one in the centre and one beside the lake. They are both those "dalek" ones that you can't get in unless you pay and I would have to be at bursting point to use them as I suffer from claustrophobia - no windows and I'm sunk. I am also convinced that if I used one it would rise in the air, spinning slowly on a stripey pole, while playing the tune from the Magic Roundabout. :D

I've got a photo, somewhere, of me having just used my husband's car as a screen while I irrigated the parched desert in Saudi Arabia. It's quite decent - he waited until I was modestly covered up (well, almost) before he took the photo. :D

On the way to Saudi my, then 9 year old, younger daughter and I stayed overnight in Cairo. Arriving at the airport we went to the loo - beautifully clean. I went in a cubicle which was quite normal but my daughter, in the next-door one, suddenly wailed, "Mum, there's no seat. It's just a hole." We found that every other cubicle had an Arab-style toilet, a grid in the floor and a water-spray tube insted of paper.

the easiest way of using the squat-job asian toilet is to turn around and face the wall , that way you can hold on to the pipe-work running up to the cistern to avoid falling over, just make sure your clothing is well clear so you don't drop the load into your skivies :D :D :D

Wrong: you are thinking of the Bard of Avon, I mean the Bard of Barnoldswick. Remember "Shall I compare thee to a wart on my buttock?" This of course was written to honor his love, Ann, the Ho of Clitheroe. But your answer, though not worth a fin, will earn you a twoonie. I still think the last intelligent person to come from Ossy was my Gran :)
