I didn't see it coming!

I have just returned from the opticians a poorer and wiser man.Having had problems with my last purchases from the likes of Specsave,I decided to opt for a more traditional opticians.

Being slightly bereft of funds at the moment I had planned my campaign.
Eye test,'er do you pay for your prescriptions, thank you that will be £25'. Now the sales talk for frames began,I cut the spin of short by producing some of my old frames(still in good nick.)

After huffing and puffing the assistant saw that my mind was made up...old frames new lenses! A small victory I thought.
Then came the crunch.

After adding such items as anti scratch, anti static coatings onto the vari focal lense, the price came to £305,this remember was my own frames.
I am one of the unlucky ones,I work therefore I pay(without regard to the level of my income).
I have seen the future and I am very poor!

If you could see you wouldn't need specs :D

Agree though total rip-off.

What was the price with frames as well. You might not have saved much if anything.

Re: I didn't see it coming!

Because people need em they charge a fortune. Even going to Specsavers isnt that cheap. Mind you I payed £138 to have new lenses in old frames and I thought that was steep but lampman wins that one hands down.:(

Yes as I mentioned I had previously tried Specsavers, buy one get one free!
They forgot to tell me they were an old pair of Henrich Himmler's.I've never had glasses that restricted the blood supply before.:p

As for the possible cost of new frames as well, the cheapest I saw were £174,great add this to my past adventures at the Dentist(non NHS of course) and its no bloody wonder I'm skint!

Re: I didn't see it coming!

why do people bother with all these anti this and that, I never did(pre laser surgery) and didn't suffer any problems with scratches etc and I'm about as clumsy as it gets when it comes to this sort of thing.

I'm afraid that all these extras are just like teh 'extended warranty' bits, just a way of screwing more cash out of you.

Re: I didn't see it coming!

The only thing I added to mine was the anti glare coating because ot the computer screens at work. They had anti glare screens until they broke em all.

I only wear my glasses half as much as I should do so they last me twice as long :)

Re: I didn't see it coming!

You'd have been better buying their frames Lampman, you then would have got discount on lenses and the like, you do get charged a lot for the extras though that you dont really need.

Re: I didn't see it coming!

Yes cheers lads that has made me feel a lot better!:p

As for Laser surgery, I considered that in my richer days, but apparently not all eye conditions are suitable for this(age related deterioation being one)

Also I have always wondered on the long term aspects of this laser correction,no one has had the cure for long enough to study the long term effects.
Anyway works for my nephew he got in the Police force after this technique,he can spot a speeding motorist at one mile!:D

Re: I didn't see it coming!

The deregulation of opticians monopoly was supposed to bring this rip off into a free for all market, the only problem is you still need to get your eyes tested with an opthalmic technician, so prices have narrowed as some of the competion went to the wall and competion lessened. There is an outfit at Blackburn that manufacture their own lenses, they are cheaper but the good lord only knows where they get the prices for a bit of acrylic plastic and brass wire they make the frames out of.

Re: I didn't see it coming!

Spuugie, get then to give you LCD screens as these are anti glare anyway.

When Julie and I both wore glasses we used a place in CLM, next to where Rileys Snooker place used to be (Turn right at teh Load of Mischief lights towards Padiham)

Mind u the only cheap way to do it [ i got told after i spent me fortune on my glasses] is that get your eyes tested if its mild range magnifactation ie mine is +1, you can get reading glasses of +1 to +2 magnification lensed glasses at poundland:D

My eyes are getting better as im getting older ironically:D
