Grow a beard : get some respect
an interesting concept by the RAF... if it makes life easier for the RAF why shouldnt they?
The Royal Air Force Regiment has relaxed the restriction on the growing of beards for its men in preparation for their deployment to Afghanistan. Beards are considered to be a sign of status in the country and the air force hopes the move will boost relations. Growing a beard is an unusual order for UK servicemen as they have been traditionally expected to be clean cut. Elements of RAF Lossiemouth's 5 Force Protection Wing (5FP) will spend six months defending Kandahar airfield. The wing includes 51 Squadron RAF Regiment and volunteers from 2622 (Highland) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force. Royal Marines have also been sporting beards during tours in Afghanistan. Commanding Officer Squadron Leader Tony Brown said growing a beard was contrary to RAF regulations, but the wing asked permission from higher up the chain of command. |

Think probably thread is after some controversy here, sorry, nothing to offer, 'cept heard a bit of trivia on the Radio today (should be in Gayle's thread really) that if all the beards in the world were shaved off would only cover a third of Wembley stadium. How do they know that ? ... |
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
beards!!!.....unless they are neat!:D
|
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
Ugly thing beards - even worse is that weird facial topiary where they trim bits off but keep bits on.
Nasty to kiss a bearded man and as Chris will verify, when he grew one for a play a few years back he didn't get much action! |
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
I'm not a lover of beards, my dislike of them dates back to school. I had a teacher who always came back from lunch sporting the full menu in his beard.......Yuk!!!
I haven't time to bother about beards, I am busy contending with my newly acquired tash:eek:. Have any other ladies here noticed that you start growing new body parts with advancing years????:( ;) |

Not having ever kissed a bearded man I can neither agree or disagree with your statement. However I have noticed in some magazines that being bereft of facial hair a lot of women do tend to trim other bodily hairs into little tufts, is this some form of beard envy? :) |
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
Eeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwww beards & tashes are a no go with me yak no nice near my skin!!
|
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
give you rashes!!!!!
|
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
More like an allergic reaction & make me want to vomit!! Goaties & the like are disgusting!
I like men clean shaven:D |
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
My husband had a beard and it suited him. I made sure he kept it trimmed and neat and it was shampooed, regularly. He shaved it off once, when the youngest child was about 3. She cried her eyes out, our eldest daughter wouldn't speak to him and our son just thought it was hilarious.
I don't like those little bits of half-shaved beards, it's either a proper one or nothing. I like moustaches too, neat clipped ones, probably because my dad had one from when I was a baby, but not bushy droopy ones. And, girls, there's a world of difference between a full, silky beard and a chin full of stubble. ;) |

Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
I'm not a massive fan of facial hair or body hair come to think about it, my other half had a tash when I first met him which I got used to but glad its now gone.

As for the latter remark, can't understand this new 'bodily art' (well, could sorta' explain in the over 18's I suppose). Just grateful didn't practice this at the maternity hospital with my last baby .. don't half itch when growing back  Sorry Mani for demeaning yer thread, what is your point ? ... well, mine is anything that is more comfortable for our soldiers facing danger every day in the outposts of our world. |
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
For what it's worth, I don't think bearded airmen will make any difference to the respect of the Afghans, in fact I don't think they'll take much notice. If they come over here and shave off their beards do we really notice it? We're used to the majority of men being clean shaven so it isn't an issue. If they keep their beards we, well those of us who aren't paranoid, don't think anything of it either.
It's not facial hair, or the lack of it, that commands respect, it's the way people behave. |
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
The worst ever ever bodily hair uurrrgghhhhhh puking at thought has got to be a hairy back:s_sick:
|
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
eeeeewwwwwwwww cant stand facial hair at all beards/tashes... nonono .... clean skin fer me ...
|
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
My nephew, as a little boy, had a very hairy back! He was covered in a sort of blond fuzz and it was rather attractive, with sort of whorls on his shoulder blades. I haven't seen his back for nearly 30 years so I don't know if he's still the same - he's still blond. ;)
My husband had a reasonably hairy chest and very hairy legs (lovely, muscley "footballer's" legs - I couldn't have married him if they'd been skinny. :D ) My son is as hairy as his dad was. Not much back hair on either of them, not so's you'd notice, but I don't get it when men shave their body hair. Give me a hairy man every time rather than a "smoothie". |

Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
The only ones I kiss with beards are women, although It does amuse me when I see a bald man with a beard, has he no control over his hairy functions, as he can grow hair anywhere other than where his vanity requires it.
|
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
I don't like beards, they always make me think the person with one has something to hide. As for bald men with beards, well, that just looks like their head is on upside down.
:) |

I don’t know if it applies today but both the RAF and army could grow moustaches. And some did, splendid ones. |
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
I get enough grief over my hairy catapiller without copping it for a chin warmer. Respect has to be earned and shouldnt rely on facial hair.
|
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
Can you wear a hazchem suit or even a gas mask with a beard? I know you can't get a proper seal with an industrial type face mask if you have a beard.

What's respect got to do with 'owt ? Talking about a fella' being kissable here ... :D More to the point as West Ender said .. don't think would make one iota of difference in Afghanistan if the RAF guys grew beards. I always picture them with bar-handle moustaches, but seems they were told to de-hair this practice years ago (somebody at work today told me the year, but forgot ...sorry) |
Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
Yes I did as I was very lonely without it Kate.

Re: Grow a beard : get some respect
I like my beard, and my pony tail, and my tatoos (I've had a Lancashire Rose on my left forearm for years). But still, I know lots of people don't like them.
I don't think that men lose their hair, it just migrates to other parts of their bodies. |
