Schools in the area are to use a text message service: (Edited)

Schools in the area are to use a text message service, to help stop children from truanting.

St Peter's CE Primary School, Accrington, will be running the system from next term.

Will funding be sought for the very few children who don't have mobiles, to provide them with one?

Amazing how some companies talk themselves up;

"But Groupcall's managing director, Howard Robinson said Lancashire schools were already leading the way.
"They are ahead of the game and after the successful pilot we are confident schools across the county will be using the technology."

This will be the same technology my stepdaughters school were using 5 years ago outside Lancashire then ?. No to mention the swipe cards they used to enter and leave school instead of teachers reading a list of names out !!

Does that work?

Surely that is open to abuse. You could get a friend to 'swipe' you in, and it would be easier to truant, rather than a teacher actually seeing the pupils at registration.

No doubt one or two have tried that method, I'm pretty sure the school would have had it covered but I honestly don't know the answer to it.

Well I dont think it'll make much difference to the kids who are going to truant but at least the parents will find out a bit quicker and it'll save an embarassing phone call to work.

If a kid wants to bunk school they will find a way regardless of any "innovotive ideas" that are around. Short of frog marching them in and then locking up like a prison the authorities and parents will never win.

I'd be pretty confident that my two oldest couldn't bunk off school without us knowing. Mount Carmel always follow up an abscence with a telephone call to home to see where the kids are.

Most kids will try to bunk off at least once during school years but the most important thing is the parents knowing that their child isn't where they are supposed to be.

Im sure as tickerbelle says, a phone call is the best way.. although neither the call nore texting solves the problem of parents who:

a) dont care
or
b) have no control

These are more important issues that should be tackled i feel.

They had a much more effective way of tackling truancy when myself and young Master Britcliffe went to St Peter's. Miss Duxbury's dreaded ruler on the palms of our hands. And did it hurt!

its a poor do when primary school kids start "whacking it" (as i used to call it:D)
rhyddings phone if your kid is not there and you havent phoned, so does moorend primary which is a good thing!
besides i think primary school kids should not have mobiles in the first place let alone text em...silly idea!!

Its so easy in theis day and age as even upper primary school kids make their own way in to school. Parents lives are so busy they dont even hang around long enough to see if their little dalings actually made it through the gate let alone stayed.
